In short (whole book)

Val investigates attacks around Harrison while trying to protect her estranged daughter, Amber, from a Dragon Justice Court inquisitor seeking proof that Val killed his son. She discovers that displaced goblins are using a magical artifact to compel peaceful Sasquatch to drive humans from the town. The crisis is resolved by relocating all 36 goblins to an unused elven sanctuary. The inquisitor abducts Amber and forces Val to confess, prompting a battle in which Zav helps Amber escape and protects Val. Court members arrive intending to subject Val to rehabilitation, but Zav invokes an ancient claim that places her under his protection and makes him responsible for her actions. Amber survives and establishes direct contact with Val. Zav publicly treats the claim as a mate bond and tries to control Val's work, but she refuses to accept his authority. The dark elves behind the deadly pleasure-orb operation remain free, and Val is assigned to find them.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Val Thorvald, a half-elf Army investigator, handled threats from magical beings with the aid of Sindari, a tiger she summons through a magical bond. Her allies included the dragon Zav, her government supervisor Willard, and the craftspeople who supplied her with magical equipment. Val's dangerous work remained separate from her estranged daughter, Amber, and former husband, Thad, but that distance could not guarantee their safety. Val also carried knowledge about a dragon's death that could expose her to the Dragon Justice Court. As the new investigation begins, her history with Zav, the court, and her family continues to shape the risks around her.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Val accompanies Nin to Rupert's underground bar, where a dark-elf artifact enthralls humans and shifters and can kill those exposed too long. A female dark elf installed the pleasure orb, while a male associate observed its effects. Val takes a scented fastener as a possible lead, and Willard arranges surveillance. The investigation is interrupted when Willard sends Val to Harrison, Idaho, where roads are being destroyed, property is being ransacked, and goblins and Sasquatch have been reported. Amber and Thad are staying in the same area, making the assignment personal. On the way, a silver dragon confronts Val. He is a Dragon Justice Court inquisitor investigating his son's death and suspects that Val knows what happened. Zav stops his attempt to force entry into Val's memories. Zav has concealed Val's connection to the death, while also pursuing dark elves whose artifacts killed thousands of shifters. The inquisitor can recognize Val's blood relatives by scent, leaving Amber and Thad exposed as Val continues toward the isolated town.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Harrison has been cut off by deliberate road destruction. Val finds evidence of many concealed goblins and encounters her mother, Thad, and Amber's household, but Amber remains unwilling to see her. Giant tracks and fur confirm that Sasquatch are also involved, although it is not clear whether the two groups are cooperating. The silver dragon follows Val into town and notices Amber, whose quarter-elven ancestry allows her to see dragons. He attacks her, but Sindari knocks her out of his reach and Val wounds him with Chopper. The inquisitor withdraws after warning that attacking a court official will have consequences. Val then speaks with Amber for the first time in nearly ten years. She explains why the dragon followed her and gives Amber a camouflage charm for protection. Amber accepts the charm but leaves without reconciling. The threat of a formal court case continues to grow.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Val's mother and Rocket help track the Sasquatch. Their trail leads to a stone cairn watched by a goblin, where Rocket is caught in a concealed bear trap and a crude magical lure compels Val to approach. After Val frees Rocket, the cairn is collapsed around her. Four Sasquatch then approach, but instead of attacking, they move the stones and release Val before rebuilding the trap. Their actions suggest they are not directing the wider campaign. Val sends her mother and the injured dog away, then follows the Sasquatch with Sindari to an old elven sanctuary containing a concealed, self-sustaining settlement. She finds no indication that the community is making the goblin devices or organizing the attacks. Meanwhile, Willard reports more deaths connected to the pleasure orbs around Puget Sound and orders Val to capture the Harrison perpetrators where possible. The evidence now points toward a third party manipulating the Sasquatch while the dark-elf artifact threat continues elsewhere.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Val catches a camouflaged goblin using a magical artifact to direct Sasquatch during another attack on Harrison. Although the goblin's allies rescue him, Val keeps the device and finds Sasquatch fur embedded in it. She uses the artifact as bait at Thad's rented house. During the attempted lure, Zav explains more of his distrust and his protective conduct toward Val, and their mutual attraction becomes explicit. A goblin finally steals the artifact, but Zav captures him. The prisoner explains that the displaced goblins hoped to claim Harrison as a refuge and used the Sasquatch to frighten away its human residents. Val refuses to return the device immediately and asks Willard to find a lawful alternative for the group. Dozens of armed goblins arrive, but Val prevents local law enforcement from killing them and secures a temporary truce pending Willard's negotiations. At the same time, the silver dragon travels toward Amber. Before Val can leave the standoff, the goblins accept her terms and wait for a relocation decision.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

The inquisitor abducts Amber and holds her on a mountain with two allied gold dragons, demanding that Val submit to a mental search. Val approaches while Zav remains close enough to intervene. She slips Amber the camouflage charm and directs Sindari to carry her toward Val's mother when an opportunity appears. Under forced examination, Val admits that she killed the inquisitor's son. Zav attacks, allowing Sindari and Amber to escape, and Val joins the fight with Chopper. Court members then arrive through a portal and halt the battle. Zav's mother identifies Val as the unacknowledged daughter of an elven king and rules that she should face rehabilitation rather than execution. Zav invokes an ancient legal claim instead, placing Val under his protection and making himself responsible for any future violations. When none of the opposing dragons accepts his challenge, he marks Val to establish the claim. The court party departs, preventing Val's immediate detention but leaving her confession, the mark, and Zav's legal authority unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

Val learns that Zav's court claim was genuine and that the magical mark may make her a target for his enemies. She refuses to accept that it gives him personal authority over her. Amber is safely reunited with Thad, Val's mother, Rocket, and Sindari. Although shaken by the dragons, she asks Val for her phone number, creating a direct connection after their long estrangement. Val's mother suggests an abandoned elven sanctuary near Granite Falls as a home for the displaced goblins. Willard confirms that it is unclaimed, and Val returns the controlling artifact before transporting all 36 goblins there. The move ends the Harrison crisis and frees the Sasquatch from coercion. Zav then visits Willard, supplies the Dragon Justice Court law behind his claim, calls Val his mate, and demands influence over her future assignments. Val states that she never consented, while Willard agrees to examine the law. Val retains her assignment to locate the dark-elf scientists behind the lethal artifacts. The court dispute, Zav's claim, Val's elven parentage, and the dark-elf operation remain open.

How does it end? (ending)

The Harrison attacks end without a massacre. Willard arranges for all 36 displaced goblins to move to an unclaimed elven sanctuary near Granite Falls, and Val returns the artifact they used to compel the Sasquatch. Amber survives her abduction and the dragon battle, then exchanges phone numbers with Val, opening a cautious path toward repairing their relationship. The inquisitor has forced Val to confess that she killed his son, but Zav prevents her immediate seizure by invoking an ancient legal claim. He marks Val as under his protection and assumes responsibility for her future violations. The Dragon Justice Court accepts the claim for now, although Zav's mother and sister remain part of the unresolved court pressure. Zav then presents himself to other dragons as Val's mate and tries to assert control over her assignments. Val rejects that authority, while Willard reviews the court law. Val's next government assignment is to find the dark-elf scientists behind the lethal artifacts, who remain at large.
