Tarot's Ninth Harbinger recap

By A. F. Kay

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

After the Pact collapses, Ruwen investigates godstone, a temporal rift, and the system changes caused by his divine advancement. The rift yields affinity technology, while Tarot reveals that Ruwen is the ninth Harbinger after Penn and the Infernal Lord. Ruwen rescues Lylan, reforms and rebuilds Eiru, gains realm-travel artifacts, splits and delays the local segment of a realm zipper, becomes a Conductor of the Eighth Harmony, and reaches Grandmaster Alchemist. Penn's research links souls, chakras, Harmony, divine golems, and dangerous experiments. The Infernal Lord then abducts Big D as bait and helps Nameless attack Ruwen through Rami's mental bond. Ruwen saves Big D and destroys Nameless, but a linked crossing-ring blast threatens an entire city. With Hamma channeling a powerful artifact, Ruwen stores the city in his soul vault and relocates it to Grave. He attacks the Infernal Realm, only to find the Infernal Lord gone. Echo remains behind as an ally, while Ruwen returns to reconstruction and prepares to hunt the missing enemy alliance and strengthen his companions.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Ruwen Starfield became a Divine Apostate and Architect while defending Grave and Eiru from divine and infernal threats. His closest allies include Hamma, Sift, Lylan, Rami, Fractal, Blapy, Lir, and the autonomous inhabitants of his inner world. A severe crisis struck the Black Pyramid, Lylan disappeared, and Ruwen fought two attacking deities. He must now find his missing companions, understand his altered powers, rebuild Eiru, and meet his obligations to the Black Pyramid.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Ruwen and his allies study the bodies and souls of two defeated deities while Fractal continues godstone research. Miranda helped dissolve the Pact and appears to have changed sides, though her reasons remain unclear. Blapy offers resources and access to her time-dilated divine realm in exchange for help repairing the Black Pyramid and recovering its prisoners. Sift and his elder star tortoise awaken after the pyramid disaster with altered soul structures, while Lylan remains missing but alive. Ruwen asks Eiru's champions to infiltrate the Infernal Realm after major enhancements, because Nameless has joined the Infernal Lord. His apostasy has also exposed an Architect framework and disrupted ordinary temple status support. Lir recovers fragments of his past, including an image of Tarot, and transfers a synchronized copy of himself into Ruwen's mind under new safeguards. The intended training period is then interrupted when Ruwen arrives at the Black Pyramid instead of Blapy's divine realm.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Blapy directs Ruwen to investigate a temporal rift caused by the universe-level changes surrounding his Architect advancement. Ruwen enters with Rami and two drake allies, including Chip, after testing soul-powered gate runes as a potential escape method whose operation inside the rift remains unproved. The rift leads to a defended Nexus facility on the remains of a world from a destroyed universe. Its mechanical forces counter Ruwen's spells and Harmony with specialized shields, dampening fields, and replicators. Chip begins teaching Ruwen to form a soul vault because ordinary storage fails inside the rift. Lir identifies the alien terrain and machinery, while Rami connects the Nexus to unfamiliar Outerverse factions. Ruwen finally uses the distinct adaptive resonance of his wings to destroy the facility's strongest carriers and the nearby forces. With the immediate defenders defeated, the party detects energy in the central building and begins investigating it.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

The Nexus site contains an affinity wheel and an automated Purge research presence waiting for reinforcements that will never arrive. Ruwen learns that three major factions divide power through souls, chakras, and Harmony-like identity lattices. The facility's experiments concern entanglement femites, which select Hamma and leave her able to recognize the wheel's affinities. Ruwen corrects the wheel, completes its research quest, and sends the recovered affinity tools to Fractal through Blapy. The site's records survive even after its final probe destroys itself. Tarot also reveals the larger crisis: Penn was his seventh Harbinger, the Infernal Lord is the eighth, and Ruwen has become the ninth. Ruwen's divine transition allowed the system to exceed old limits and seek contact beyond the universe. With the rift investigation complete and the Infernal Lord confirmed alive, Ruwen makes Lylan's rescue the immediate priority.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Ruwen, Hamma, Sift, and the elder star tortoise follow Lylan's signal into a deep ocean trench. A powerful Royal Sea Hydra Queen blocks their path, surviving repeated destruction of its heads and resisting their magical, mental, and soul attacks. Ruwen displaces the Queen rather than killing it, then finds Lylan critically weakened in a ruined underwater city. Lylan's life is bound to the Queen, which has been sent to Earth. The group follows, protects the hydra from military attacks, and reunites it with Lylan, restoring her health. The Aspect of Death explains that Earth recently gained infernal-tainted spirit when destruction of the Savage Island crossing ring triggered its linked ring. Her father, the Infernal Lord, contained that disaster. Ruwen warns her about Nameless but leaves without settling Earth's wider danger. Back on Grave, Lylan reveals that her blood has changed and become poisonous. The party divides, with Ruwen turning toward national rebuilding and reform.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Rumors of Eiru's death threaten national stability. Ruwen works with Bliz and Big D on extensive reforms: voluntary class resets, broader access to abilities, contribution-based rewards, multiclassing limits, paired human and creature enforcers, and new civic communication and voting systems. National leaders accept the broad plan after Ruwen demonstrates that the country remains protected. He begins expanding surveillance and replenishing spirit from stored magical metal. Penn's recovered artifacts then open a different path. Ruwen binds the Threshold Compass of Fortune, a weapon connected to 32 divine golems, and the Triumvirate Bridge. The Bridge carries him from the material realm to the Spirit Realm and back without apparent energy cost, although external communication fails during the transfer. He then uses it to enter the Shadow Realm, whose hazards remain untested.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Ruwen investigates how his soul interacts with the Shadow Realm and binds a private sanctum filled with inherited maps, books, and artifacts. He postpones examining its contents until the uncontrolled creation of inner-world entities can be contained. Tarot and Rami reveal that the Prime has restricted Ruwen to the universe's first six dimensions, preventing a hoped-for solution to its depleted spirit. Ruwen also accepts the Forbidden Unity quest, even though completing it will draw Outerverse hostility. Penn's sword can store one chosen ability from each of 32 divine golems, and Ruwen uses Tarot's place to preserve a short-range resurrection effect for recently fallen allies. Tarot then takes Ruwen and Rami to a realm zipper, a system-driven separation of creation and destruction from the material realm. With escape becoming impossible, Ruwen prepares to stop the local segment approaching Grave.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

Ruwen reaches beneath ordinary matter into the Femite layer and uses its universal resonance as a medium for Harmony. He splits the local realm zipper and lets its damaged halves pass around him, Rami, and Tarot. The feat advances his Harmonic path and forces a choice among several specializations. After weighing the cost and danger, Ruwen becomes a Conductor of the Eighth Harmony. He learns a wide-area suppression effect that makes soul abilities far more expensive and a stillness effect that reduces frequencies to zero while maintained. Rami also forms her first small soul vault. The group concludes that inhabitants of their universe combine soul and chakra traits that the hostile Outerverse factions normally keep separate, making the truth an existential secret. Meanwhile, Ruwen's mental world has expanded into many populated planets. Rather than erase their inhabitants, he appoints Lir to build a restricted internal system that will control new entity formation and strengthen defenses against intrusion.

Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)

Ruwen visits the rapidly growing Shattered Sun and reviews Fractal's godstone work. The process can preserve non-soul dungeon beings, but copying or restoring a real soul remains unsafe and unproved. Fluffy's quartermaster work has been essential to the dungeon's expansion. Ruwen then enters the Black Pyramid's alchemy facilities under a severe time limit, hoping to reach the level needed to unlock Fractal's complete recipe access. He delegates production to the alchemy narrator and an enormous network of alchemist minions, selects the Fortune path, and gains boons that accelerate advancement, improve luck, and permit retries after failures. Fluffy quietly extends his opportunity with additional work when the original supply runs out. The final production team succeeds just before the extended limit closes, bringing Ruwen to alchemy level 1,000. He completes the hidden Path to Perfection and becomes a Grandmaster Alchemist.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

Miranda certifies Ruwen as a Black Pyramid Grandmaster Alchemist and later confirms her continuity with Blapy. His Fortune recipe creates Liquid Luck, which can permanently alter karmic value but cannot benefit its maker. After passing a practical examination with an original poison-defense pill, Ruwen enters the long Tournament of Perfection for a chance to reach the Nine Muses' Archive. He then selects Civil Development and Satisfaction as Eiru's national focus, providing citizens with civic and work benefits while committing the nation to that direction for a year. Using system-backed planning, architectural advice, and merit-based allocation, he reshapes Eiru and begins extending new construction templates across the country. Lir increases building quests and adds safeguards against merit exploitation.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Ruwen reunites with Hamma, Sift, and Lylan at Poor Judgment. A wealthy foreign adventurer tries to seize a resurrection pill, but Ruwen's group defeats the challenge without killing anyone and distributes the surrendered valuables. Sift begins learning gate runes with his immense new soul power. Xavier reports promising godstone samples, while Ruwen forbids any soul test before the risks are understood. Penn's journals then connect the 32 divine golems, designed and levelable souls, eight chakras, bamboo-viper training, and the imprisoned Dark Priest. Eiru confirms that Ruwen's parents protect the surviving step-trained chakra experiment. Fractal's latest godstone resembles an identity lattice, but restoration remains unproved. Ruwen also learns that the crossing-ring disaster affected the experiment's world and that the Infernal Lord's daughter was assigned there as an instructor. Before the group can finish comparing these discoveries, a new portal and demon incursion appears near Poor Judgment.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

The demon incursion is a diversion while a second breach at Midpoint kills scouts and abducts Big D. Ruwen follows the trap to a demon-threatened world, sends Sift and Lylan to reinforce its last city, and rescues Big D with Hamma. The Infernal Lord is present, and Nameless exploits Rami's deep bond with Ruwen to enter his mind and search for his true name. Ruwen's protected consciousness remains beyond its reach, allowing him to destroy Nameless and end the mental assault. He learns that the Infernal Lord has likely allied with the escaped Dark Priest and two corrupted angels, possibly to seize Penn's soul vault. The enemy then detonates both crossing rings on the planet and escapes through the Shadow Realm. With an explosion about to consume the last city, Ruwen discovers that Hamma can channel the vast power of Clouds Embracing the Sun. He uses that energy to extend his soul vault around the city, stores its entire population, and triggers an emergency return to Grave while the artifact cracks.

Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)

Ruwen releases the rescued city at a coastal site on Grave. Clouds Embracing the Sun breaks into four pieces, leaving Ruwen obligated to return the remnants to its creator. Hamma remains in pain from channeling it, and moving the city reduces Ruwen's soul regeneration to one percent of its former rate. Despite that weakness, he immediately leads allies into the Infernal Realm. Sift's soul attacks, Hamma's residual artifact power, and Lylan's new resonance technique prove highly effective against darkness-infected demons. Ruwen breaks the central-ring shield but finds the Infernal Lord and his treasures gone. Echo, the Plague Siren's daughter, remains behind to mourn her mother, whose missing soul makes resurrection impossible. She accepts Ruwen's group as allies. Three days of searching fail to locate the Infernal Lord, the Dark Priest, or the corrupted angels. Big D is safe, Fractal is inactive in a crystal cocoon, and Eiru's reconstruction continues. Ruwen plans to strengthen his allies while pursuing the Harbinger threat, the possible loss of Penn's soul vault, safe soul restoration, and the unresolved connections among souls, chakras, Harmony, Affinity, and Bloodline.

How does it end? (ending)

Ruwen rescues Big D, destroys Nameless inside his mind, and learns that the Infernal Lord has likely joined forces with the Dark Priest and two corrupted angels. When both crossing rings on the last city's world explode, Ruwen uses Hamma's unexplained resonance with Clouds Embracing the Sun to extend his soul vault around the whole city and move its population to Grave. The artifact breaks into four pieces, Hamma remains in pain, and Ruwen's soul regeneration falls to one percent of its former rate. Ruwen then leads an assault into the Infernal Realm, but the Infernal Lord has emptied the central sanctuary and escaped. Echo remains there to mourn her mother and parts from Ruwen as an ally. Big D returns safely to Midpoint, Fractal remains sealed in a crystal cocoon, and Eiru's reconstruction continues. The locations of the Infernal Lord, the Dark Priest, and the corrupted angels remain unknown. Penn's soul vault may have been taken, safe soul restoration through godstone is still unproved, and the Harbinger and Outerverse threats remain urgent.
