The third Undying Mercenaries novel follows weapons specialist James McGill as Legion Varus prepares to vote on whether to join Earth's growing hegemony. When hegemony officers try to arrest him without explanation, the confrontation turns violent, and McGill and Natasha Elkin work to keep the incident from swaying the vote against independence. Varus chooses to stay independent, but is immediately dispatched on a year-long posting to Tau Ceti, the advanced planetary city known as Tech World, taking over guard duties from another legion. Once there, McGill's clashes with a superior officer cost him a promotion, and an off-book cargo escort assigned by a Legion Germanica adjunct turns into a firefight that leaves Varus holding a large quantity of unexplained imperial cash.
