Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Drew Michalik (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A powerful defender returning from an underground rescue, Drew is responsible for guiding a large column of civilians toward safety while threats gather around them. His companions remain below ground after rescuing captives, and the shelter group looks to him for their return.

Katie Sabin (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A practical leader who protects a civilian shelter while Drew's rescue party is away. Katie can reshape walls and uses that ability to strengthen defenses against repeated monster attacks. She directs armed civilians and adapts the shelter when burrowing creatures breach its floor.

Sarah Rothschild (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A trusted member of Drew's rescue party and a capable healer. Sarah helps lead the survivors being brought back from underground captivity. Although separated from the shelter overnight, she remains connected to JP through his command-linked sight.

Daryl (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An invisible scout who reconnoiters the rescue route and helps guard the column's rear. He remains underground with Drew's party after the captive rescue. His ability to move unseen makes him central to judging the hazards between the survivors and safety.

JP (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An Order of the Fang scout corporal and firearms specialist. His command-linked sight can briefly show him what selected allies are seeing while he helps defend Katie's shelter. The link also gives the shelter its limited view of Drew's distant rescue operation.

Robbi (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A defender connected to JP's command interface. He is among the established members of Drew's group as the separated survivors endure the night. His location with the returning rescue party lets JP follow part of the distant fighting through the command link.

Major Hoffacker (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

An Air Force officer who inventories the survivors' Xatherite abilities and helps organize the vulnerable evacuation column. Hoffacker evaluates what each empowered survivor can contribute while the group prepares to move more than two hundred people through dangerous territory.

Captain Snyder (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A naval officer asserting formal command over the rescued survivors. He urges the column onward despite its size and vulnerability. His emphasis on continued movement places him in the formal chain of command as Drew reunites with Katie at the shelter.

Dak (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

An Army private whose Xatherite lets him turn his body to rock. The added mass makes movement difficult and leaves him exhausted. The transformation offers substantial protection, but its physical burden limits how readily he can travel with the column.

Glenn (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

A defender traveling with the rescued column. Glenn fights with launched daggers and can stop incoming ranged attacks. Those complementary abilities give him a distinct place among the armed survivors protecting a much larger group of vulnerable civilians.

Adam (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

A young civilian attached to Drew's team whose power moves earth without direct contact. His ability offers practical value for altering terrain and defenses as the rescued column prepares to cross dangerous ground toward a more secure settlement.

Kara (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

A survivor who sends Drew a warning about Robbi's secret communications and his intended meeting at the bridge. Her message gives Drew and Katie reason to question Robbi's motives before the refugee column reaches the planned crossing.

Gunther (Minor)

First appears in chapter 6

Robbi's contact within an organized stadium faction. He accepts an instruction to postpone the group's planned action while Drew assesses conditions at the stadium. His response confirms that Robbi's private communications involve a coordinated political movement.

Chief Mather (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A healer assigned to Drew's bridge scouting party as it prepares a safe crossing for the survivor column.

Sergeant Hargrave (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The leader of a Nats Park patrol that meets Drew's approaching group. He confirms the stadium can provide shelter, though its resources are limited. He lowers his weapon after hearing what the refugees survived and begins the first cautious contact between the communities.

Senator Robert Gunn (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

An Arizona senator leading the survivor community at Nats Park. He grants the arriving refugees temporary admission despite the stadium's severe food shortage. Gunn begins negotiating how the newcomers will contribute and introduces the officials responsible for defense, food, and facilities.

Gonzalez (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

The facilities manager at Nats Park. Gonzalez has restored running water and is one of the leaders introduced as the newcomers negotiate entry into the stadium community. His work supports one of the settlement's most important advantages despite its limited food supply.

Pappy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

An elderly craftworker who reshapes monster bones into weapons, equipment, and storage gear. He examines the fire-croc remains for clues about their explosive bodies and measures Drew, Katie, and Sarah for carrying equipment that can hold unusually large loads.

Chomp (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

A remarkably capable close-combat member selected for the stadium expedition. Chomp fights with an animate ball-and-chain and also possesses slowing fire and limited healing. His balance of endurance and striking power earns him a place on the urgent descent beneath Nats Park.

Luke (Supporting)

Also known as Chomp

First appears in chapter 28

The seraph previously known to the expedition as Chomp. The Order of the Dragon charged Luke with helping Drew survive and develop, but strict rules limit when he may intervene. He also carries advanced equipment.

Bill (Minor)

First appears in chapter 28

A Navy chief healer whose embrace-based ability helps stabilize Hargrave after the underground expedition. Bill joins the triage effort when the severely burned scout is brought back from the node chamber and requires immediate treatment.

Isis (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 40

A Muat mother goddess and Felidae prognosticator who contacts Drew as a fellow divinity. She identifies his developing sphere as Retribution and warns that powerful interests and the fae are moving against him, though her forecasts are not certain.

Chesty (Minor)

First appears in chapter 42

A giant English bulldog living near the Marine barracks. Chesty consumes hostile lizard creatures outside the building, and the stranded Marines feed it enemies rather than risk a confrontation with a creature they have learned to tolerate.

Gunnery Sergeant Daniels (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 43

The senior field leader among the stranded Marines. He reports that nearly 150 survive, many too badly injured to move, and cooperates with Drew's group in organizing healing, equipment, and evacuation teams.

Corporal Clark (Minor)

First appears in chapter 43

A Marine who guides Drew's rescuers through the barricaded and trapped access routes of the barracks. Clark serves as their first guide inside the survivors' defensive position as Drew's group begins assessing casualties and evacuation routes.

Private Bird (Minor)

First appears in chapter 44

A Marine whose unusual crayon abilities can create sharp weapons and provide a powerful temporary physical enhancement when he consumes one of his creations. The strength of that enhancement makes Drew cautious about encouraging wider use.
