The girl from a world of daemons who, across two books, has become central to a war spanning the worlds. As this book opens she is a prisoner, kept drugged and asleep in a remote cave by her own mother, Mrs. Coulter, who is hiding her from a Church that wants her dead. Prophecy names Lyra as one who will face a great temptation with the fate of all worlds hanging on her choice. Resourceful, loyal, and bound to her daemon Pantalaimon, she will be reunited with Will and drawn into a journey that leads even into the land of the dead.

The boy from an Oxford like ours who bears the subtle knife, a blade that can cut windows between worlds and sever anything. Grieving his father and separated from Lyra, he sets out to rescue her, guided at first by two rebel angels. Determined and steady beyond his years, he is prepared to defy angels and armies alike to reach her. The knife makes him a figure of enormous importance in the coming war, and his bond with Lyra grows into the heart of the story.

Lyra's daemon and the outward form of her soul, still shifting shape as a child's daemon does. He shares everything Lyra suffers, and the bond between them is tested as never before when their journey demands a terrible separation. Through this book the deep meaning of that bond, and what it costs to be parted, becomes one of the central mysteries, and Pantalaimon's fate is tied to Lyra's growth toward adulthood.

Lyra's mother, a beautiful, brilliant, and dangerous woman who has spent her life serving and manipulating the Church of her world. Now she has stolen her own daughter away and keeps her hidden and asleep in a mountain cave, fiercely resolved that no one else shall have her. Her motives are a tangle of obsession, cunning, and a maternal feeling she barely understands in herself, and neither the Church nor Lord Asriel can be sure whose side she is truly on. Her daemon is a golden monkey.

Lyra's father, a proud and ruthless commander who has raised an army and built a great fortress in another world to make war on the Authority, the ancient power behind the Church. Brilliant and utterly single-minded, he has gathered rebel angels, exiled beings, and warriors from many worlds to his cause of overthrowing the Kingdom of Heaven. He cares more for his vast purpose than for any single person, yet the fate of his daughter is caught up in the war he has begun.

One of two rebel angels who attach themselves to Will after his father's death, meaning to bring the knife-bearer to Lord Asriel. Angels in this story are beings of Dust, less solid than humans, and proud, sorrowful Balthamos is devoted to his companion Baruch. Though at times disdainful and easily wounded, he becomes a real guardian to Will, and his loyalty is tested by grief and danger as the war closes in.

The physicist and former nun from Will's world who studied conscious dark matter. Told by the particles themselves to play the serpent, she leaves her own world through a window and comes to the land of the mulefa, strange wheeled creatures who live in harmony with the Dust their world calls sraf. There she builds an amber spyglass that lets her see Dust directly, and she discovers that it is draining away from all the worlds. Her role in the story's climax proves quietly decisive.

Two Gallivespians, members of a race of proud people no larger than a hand, who ride dragonflies and carry venomous spurs on their heels. Allied with Lord Asriel, they are sent to watch over and, if need be, control Lyra and Will. Fierce, honourable, and quick to take offense at any slight to their dignity, Tialys and Salmakia come to respect and protect the children, accompanying them on their most dangerous journey and sharing its perils.

The armoured bear-king of Svalbard, Lyra's fierce and loyal friend from earlier travels. Wise and honourable in the plain way of his kind, he leads his bears through a world thrown into upheaval by the war and the strange warming of the North. When Will's knife is broken, it is Iorek's unmatched skill at working metal that can mend it, and he lends his strength once more to Lyra's cause even as he warns of the dangers the knife carries.

A zealous young priest of the Church in Lyra's world, chosen for a secret and terrible mission. Believing Lyra to be a second Eve whose temptation could doom all souls, the Church's Consistorial Court grants him absolution in advance for a murder not yet committed and sends him to hunt Lyra down and kill her before she can fall. Patient and utterly devoted to his purpose, he follows her trail across the worlds.

A mighty and merciless angel who serves as Regent, ruling the Kingdom of Heaven in place of the ancient, failing Authority. Once a man in the earliest days of the world, he has grown into a being of enormous power and ambition, bent on tightening the Kingdom's grip over every world and crushing Lord Asriel's rebellion. Ruthless and watchful, he becomes the chief enemy in the war's final reckoning.

First appears in chapter 30

The first and oldest of the angels, who long ago claimed to be the creator of all things and set himself up as God over the worlds, giving rise to the Kingdom of Heaven and its Church. In truth he made nothing; he was only the earliest being to condense out of Dust. By now impossibly ancient, he has withdrawn from rule, leaving power to his Regent, and is little more than a frail relic of the authority he once wielded.
