Nicknamed Mr. Ice for his controlled fighting style, he is ambitious enough to let the department promote a public bout that will advance his career. His new partnership with Lee Blanchard draws him toward Lee's household and, later, into the investigation of Elizabeth Short's murder.

A celebrated LAPD detective and powerful former boxer, known in the ring as Mr. Fire. He becomes Bucky's partner after their heavily promoted match. His confidence and generosity are shadowed by a consuming interest in missing women rooted in the childhood disappearance of his sister.
