A Hawaiian sailor who encounters a mysterious bottle while visiting San Francisco. Bold, generous, and eager to improve his life, he accepts its power only after testing the rules that make ownership both tempting and perilous.

The wealthy and deeply unhappy owner who first sells Keawe the bottle. He explains that its imp can grant nearly any wish, but that an owner who dies before selling it for less than its purchase price will be damned.

Keawe's trusted friend and fellow sailor, who helps him investigate the bottle's claims. Curious but cautious, Lopaka agrees to take the dangerous object only after its power has been demonstrated and Keawe's wish fulfilled.

A young Hawaiian woman whom Keawe meets after he has gained his beautiful house. She loves him with exceptional courage and, once she learns the cause of his secret misery, quietly risks her own fate to free him.

The supernatural being confined in the strange bottle. It fulfills its owner's wishes but binds each benefit to a deadly condition: the bottle must be sold at a monetary loss before the owner dies, and its price can only fall.

A hardened sailor in Tahiti whom Keawe recruits as part of a plan to rescue Kokua from the bottle. Once he possesses it, his fearlessness and indifference to damnation produce an outcome Keawe did not expect.
