In post-Arthurian Britain, Axl and Beatrice are an elderly couple living beneath a mist of collective forgetfulness. They leave their village to find the son they dimly remember and travel with Wistan, a Saxon warrior, and Edwin, a boy marked by a strange wound. Sir Gawain, Arthur's surviving knight, also crosses their path. The travelers learn that the dragon Querig's breath sustains the mist: Merlin's enchantment concealed a massacre of Saxons ordered after Arthur's peace was broken. Axl once served Arthur and helped advance that settlement, while Gawain protects the dragon to preserve it. Wistan defeats Gawain and kills Querig, allowing memory to return but making renewed war likely. Axl and Beatrice recall their son's death and old damage within their marriage. At the coast, a boatman takes the dying Beatrice toward an island but leaves Axl behind, separating the couple at the end of their journey.

Axl and Beatrice, an elderly Briton couple, live in a settlement where a pervasive forgetfulness makes recent events and older relationships difficult to hold in mind. They believe they have a son in another village and decide to visit him despite opposition from their neighbors. On the road they shelter near a ruined villa and meet a boatman whose task is to carry certain people to an island. A woman waiting there tells Beatrice that couples are questioned about their shared memories and may be forced to cross separately. Because Axl and Beatrice can remember so little of their life together, Beatrice becomes determined to discover the cause of the mist before they reach such a crossing.

Axl and Beatrice reach a Saxon settlement shaken by ogre attacks. Wistan, a visiting Saxon warrior, rescues a boy named Edwin from the creatures, but Edwin has received a troubling wound. The villagers fear contamination and exile him, so Wistan takes responsibility for him. The four travelers leave together, with Wistan privately pursuing a mission connected to the mountains. They encounter Sir Gawain, the aged nephew of King Arthur, who says he has long been charged with killing the dragon Querig. Fragments of recognition pass between Axl and the knight, suggesting that Axl's forgotten life may have involved Arthur's realm. The group aims for a monastery where a learned monk may be able to treat Beatrice and Edwin.

At the monastery, Father Jonus offers help, but the travelers discover that the place is entangled with soldiers seeking Wistan and Edwin. What appears to be a place of healing becomes a trap. Axl's instincts and flashes of memory reveal experience with political danger, while Wistan's skill confirms that he is no ordinary wanderer. The group escapes through perilous underground passages and separates from some of its pursuers. Suspicion grows around the monks' interest in the dragon and around Sir Gawain's true purpose. Edwin, meanwhile, hears an inner summons that he associates with his missing mother, and the wound on his body seems to draw him toward Querig rather than merely making him ill.

As the travelers move deeper into the country, Wistan trains Edwin and prepares for his own mission: killing Querig. The mist is not natural forgetfulness but the result of an enchantment carried by the dragon's breath. Sir Gawain's repeated appearances and evasions show that his long duty is more complicated than the hunt he first described. Axl recovers pieces of his former identity as an envoy who served King Arthur and worked to establish peace between Britons and Saxons. Those memories bring unease rather than simple pride, because the peace concealed unresolved violence. Axl and Beatrice also begin to remember wounds within their marriage, testing the belief that recovering every lost memory can only bring them closer.

The truth of the buried conflict emerges. After Arthur made peace with the Saxons, his forces broke the settlement and slaughtered Saxon communities, including noncombatants, to end the war decisively. Merlin used Querig to spread forgetfulness so survivors on both sides would lose the memories that could renew revenge. Axl served as Arthur's diplomat and helped prepare the political ground, then broke with the king over the betrayal. Sir Gawain has actually guarded the dragon and the imposed peace. Wistan, acting for a Saxon king and shaped by the losses of his people, intends to end the spell even though restored memory will likely bring another cycle of war. Near Querig's resting place, Gawain stands between Wistan and the dragon.

Wistan defeats and kills Sir Gawain, then kills the old dragon Querig. With the source of the mist gone, he expects the Saxons to remember Arthur's betrayal and tells Edwin to prepare for a future struggle against the Britons. Axl and Beatrice continue to the coast as their personal memories return. Their son did not establish a distant home awaiting them: he died, and Beatrice wants to visit his grave on the island. They also remember Beatrice's infidelity and a period when Axl withdrew from her, although love survived the hurt. At the shore the boatman questions them and agrees to take the weakening Beatrice across first, claiming he will return for Axl. Axl recognizes that the boatman is separating them and that he may never join her. He comforts Beatrice as she leaves, then turns away alone. The mist's end restores truth, but it also releases grief, division, and the possibility of renewed war.

Wistan kills Querig after defeating Sir Gawain, ending the enchantment that has suppressed the country's memories. He expects the Saxons to remember Arthur's massacre and predicts that their descendants will take revenge on the Britons. Axl and Beatrice remember that their son died and that Axl once left Beatrice after her infidelity, although they later reconciled. At the shore, Beatrice is weak and ready to cross to the island. The boatman agrees to take her first but refuses to carry Axl in the same trip, promising to return for him. Axl understands that the separation is probably permanent. He reassures Beatrice, watches her depart with the boatman, and walks away alone as rain falls. The national peace and the couple's private peace have both depended partly on forgetting; with memory restored, neither can remain untouched.
