The Butcher's Masquerade recap

The sixth floor is the Hunting Grounds, where paying off-world hunters stalk crawlers. Carl opens it with a massacre of hunters in Zockau using the stat-stealing Ring of Divine Suffering, then spends the floor fighting a running war against the mantis huntress Vrah, her mother Circe Took, and the hunter factions, while his lawyer Quasar wrings concessions from Borant, whose ownership shifts to the Valtay mid-book partly through Donut's quiet scheming. Bea, Carl's ex, is revealed alive and paraded on Odette's show. Signet returns leading an army against her half-sister Queen Imogen and the naiad Confederacy; Miriam Dom, turned vampire, chooses death at sunrise to cure the spreading curse, devastating her goat Prepotente; and dinosaur matriarch Kiwi mates with Mongo while the vampiric Big Tina ravages towns. Everything converges at the Butcher's Masquerade, Imogen's peace-sealed gala: Signet sacrifices herself to break the seal, Vrah and Circe and Imogen die in the battle, Kiwi is revealed as Tina's transformed mother, the castle and changelings are teleported to safety, Katia kills Eva but is cursed with the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, and the Princess Posse claims a place in the ninth floor's Faction Wars. The party then skips the seventh floor outright, landing on the eighth.

Previously: Earth became the Borant Corporation's eighteen-floor broadcast dungeon. Carl and the talking cat Princess Donut, with manager Mordecai, dinosaur Mongo, and doppelganger Katia, rose to the top of the crawl across five floors, gathering the sabotage manual called the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, the doll-headed goddess-fragment Samantha, and allies including Louis, Firas, Elle, Imani, and the changeling Juice Box. Carl became an acolyte of the fire god Emberus and assembled the Gate of the Feral Gods, using it to flood Larracos, the ninth floor's great city, after publicly threatening to unleash a feral god there. Maggie My, the Infiltrator who had stolen Chris's body, was finally killed. Enemies remain everywhere: the Skull Empire's royals, the child crawler Lucia Mar, the rampaging Quan Ch, and Eva, the cruelest of Hekla's Daughters, whom Katia intends to thwart by protecting her former teammates. Bea, Carl's ex-girlfriend and Donut's owner, is secretly alive on the surface. The party descends to the sixth floor, the Hunting Grounds, where off-world trophy hunters may enter the dungeon to stalk crawlers, and Carl has pledged to kill every one of them.

The sixth floor opens with lawyers before monsters. The Syndicate liaison Orren relays Borant's demand that Carl surrender the Gate of the Feral Gods, and Carl's new attorney Quasar negotiates its temporary handover in exchange for four mercenaries, including the rock-monsters Bomo and the Sledge, and replicas of two of the gate's spells: a stairwell teleport and the city-moving zerzura. Donut draws the Legendary Diva class, whose song-based spells are useless in the mouth of a cat who cannot sing; Carl upgrades to Agent Provocateur; Mordecai manifests as a tiny pocket bear. Before the hunters are even released, Carl teleports into the town of Zockau, where they gather, and slaughters dozens with bombs and the Ring of Divine Suffering, which converts marked kills into permanent stats, trapping many survivors in the Desperado Club. Wounded in the escape, he is rescued by Miriam Dom, now a vampire, and her goat Prepotente. Mordecai warns him the ring is addictive; the broadcast announces a guild system and, at floor's end, a gala called the Butcher's Masquerade for the top fifty crawlers.

The party digs in for a floor-long war. Katia coordinates knocking down bridges to channel hunter movement while Carl plots a second strike on Zockau, aborted when a note from the mantis huntress Vrah reveals the town is now explosion-proofed and that the Hive has claimed him as prey; the hunters are formally released. Donut solves a hostile town's bureaucracy by killing its mayor and taking the office herself, renaming the place Point Mongo, and the party picks up the Recital quest to investigate dinosaur attacks on the town. Mongo bolts to answer them: he has found a mate, Kiwi, matriarch of an all-female pack of his species. Donut, confronted about her recklessness, admits she is terrified of being left behind, and Carl promises she will always be part of his plans. Signet, the tattooed Elite from the third floor, arrives leading an alliance of were-kin and outcasts: her royal father is dead, her half-sister Imogen rules the high elves, and her mother was murdered by the naiad Confederacy she means to destroy. A looted map shows the hunting factions have carved the floor into territories, with Carl and Donut claimed by the Hive and the Skull Empire.

The floor's politics go galactic. Between Scolopendra lore from Signet's allies and a third sponsorship from the enigmatic Apothecary, Carl and Donut are summoned to Odette's show, where Odette reveals she has been hiding Bea, alive, since the collapse, to keep Borant from repurposing her as a boss. The on-air reunion is a drugged, stage-managed mess, and Donut's parting words to her former owner are not kind. Mid-broadcast, a planet-shaking announcement lands: the Borant Corporation has been split from its government and the Valtay Corporation granted majority ownership, a coup in which Donut, Zev, and Odette all quietly had hands, with Donut admitting she smuggled Valtay agents to the resistance. Back below, the screws tighten: hunters lose outside communication, Carl is booked for a fan convention, Imani becomes guildmaster of the crawlers' new alliance, and Katia formally leaves the party to lead her own team. Elves attack, Samantha is weaponized as a screaming missile, and Carl notches another kill from the hunter faction called the Dream.

Signet's war reaches its first climax at Fort Freedom, the drowned naiad palace. Samantha, promised help recovering her body once the campaign ends, plays decoy at the front door while Signet's forces storm the throne room, and Carl learns the cruelty at the story's root: the dispel-water curse that keeps Signet from her own element was cast by the same high elves who helped the dissenters murder her father the Tsar. The assault ends in a monstrous twist: Claude, a river-beast borough boss who has already devoured the Confederacy and swallows Samantha for good measure, rises from the water, and the allies kill it at the cost of the gentle sage Miss Nadine. The quest updates: Big Tina, the dinosaur ravaging Point Mongo, is named as the Recital quest's culprit, and the Vengeance of the Daughter storyline advances to its final act, kill Queen Imogen at the Butcher's Masquerade, with the high elf castle's loot, possibly including protection from Scolopendra, as the prize. As the party travels on, they walk into the town of Alucarda, whose new mayor is Lucia Mar, just as Carl is teleported away to his convention.

Carl's convention becomes a hostage situation with autographs. Learning his panel will be moderated by Circe Took, mother of both Vrah and a mantis he killed at Zockau, and realizing his guards have drugged away his inhibitions, Carl brawls verbally with her on stage until a robed stranger, one of his own mysterious sponsors, shuts her down. Knowing hunters still leak information from outside, he loudly crowdsources a fake plan to kill Vrah. He returns into an ambush: Lucia Mar camped in the safe room with teleport traps, hunters ringing the exits, and Samantha bolted to Vrah's trophy rack of crawler heads. The real plan unfolds; Carl butchers his way through the cordon and leaves Vrah with a parting gift, an arrow-borne double dose of gonorrhea, before diving into the safe room. The reunion that follows brings lighter news: Katia and Bautista are together, Donut acquires a vocal coach, and the recap broadcast shows Donut fighting Lucia Mar to a draw, killing one of her hell-dogs, while Lucia argues with people who are not there. The floor's strangest thread arrives with Edict, the last male mantis, whose suicide-by-safe-room underlines how thoroughly Vrah's species burns its own.

The middle floor grinds on: Donut collects towns like trophies, a second convention appearance ends with Carl stabbing a show host with a sharpie and earning the threat of a post-crawl warrant, and the Plenty and Apothecary send protection against a spreading new horror, vampirism. Miriam Dom, its unwilling source, calls for help: she is pinned in a ruined town under a paralyzed, fragile Prepotente, while Big Tina, now a vampire herself, raises undead dinosaurs. Fighting through, Carl and Donut learn the dinosaurs were once ursine, transformed in Scolopendra's attack, and that Tina, denied her childhood recital, wants to dance. Miriam's confession is worse: Prepotente's stat-stealing ring accidentally marked her, meaning he cannot heal while she lives, and killing her, the head vampire, will cure every victim. She asks Carl for death; he refuses, and instead sits with her until sunrise does it gently. The cure sweeps the floor, the Creeping Apocalypse world quest begins, and Prepotente, waking to what happened, eats his own ring. Donut charms Kiwi's pack into the party's service as Carl works out that his sponsor the Plenty engineered the whole chain of events.

The endgame board assembles. During the creeper hunt the party meets the high elves and Queen Imogen's familiar: Ferdinand, Bea's other cat, repurposed into a weapon, who nearly kills Donut before her hidden Cockroach ability saves her. The world quest fails, and the punishment reshapes the floor: safe room access now depends on a blood bar filled by killing, and the Gehenna Bramble begins devouring the map, herding every survivor toward the high elf castle. A captured hunter confirms a darker rumor, the dungeon's AI is going primal, ignoring the Syndicate's own court orders, possibly because Borant bought it used and under the table. Signet warns that the dryads may summon the goddess Diwata, and a cryptic sponsor note tells Carl that Circe Took is Diwata's sponsor, with instructions to pass a potion to Donut. A flashback reveals the plan under the plan: Carl and Quasar intend to use the zerzura spell to move an entire city, changelings inside, to the ninth floor. Carl and Donut blackmail their way into the Desperado Club's hunter floor to coordinate with the changelings, and Orren, departing, all but warns them the Masquerade is a trap: Imogen is a country boss built to zero out the top crawlers.

The last days before the gala are spent thinning the herd: guild-wide raids kill hunters by the score, until a church assault triggers Diwata's entry into the realm, and with her a mark of death on Carl for an earlier desecration of her shrine. The goddess ignores the crawlers entirely and beelines for Vrah; Samantha explains Diwata births new forest creatures, and the group realizes she means to cure the mantis's gonorrhea and midwife a new brood. Reaching the next town, Carl briefs Signet honestly: her scripted revenge on Imogen is the floor's climax, designed by showrunners, and he has an alternative plan. Donut has meanwhile amassed a drawer of unexplained gifts from other crawlers' benefactor boxes, a puzzle no one can solve. Carl commits his plan to the cookbook's hidden pages, and the team walks into the Butcher's Masquerade with layered objectives: survive the night, finish the Recital quest, save the changelings, take the castle, and kill Eva, Lucia Mar, and every hunter left alive.

The Masquerade opens under a celestial peace seal: Queen Imogen, revealed to Carl as a repurposed human, the twin sister of the dead crawler Ifechi, will win a divine boon from the god Apito if the night passes without violence, and anyone who breaks the seal will be fed to the Nothing. The guest list is a landmine: Vrah promising Carl a present, Lucia Mar and Eva circling, Empress D'Nadia judging the pet contest, and Signet, invited by Apito personally to test the queen. Carl works the prize counter, buying, among trinkets, the queen's own memorial crystal at Mordecai's urging. Mongo performs in the pet show. Florin pieces together that several personalities share Lucia's head and that her dog is central to it. Outside, baby mantises swarm the castle grounds as Vrah and Circe Took stage their coup; inside, hunters crowd Lucia, goading her to break the seal first. Ferdinand, charmed by Donut, crawls through the ducts into the crawlers' ballroom, and Samantha, doing the same, finds the castle's control room guards already dead. Then Imogen seals every guest inside, and Carl realizes the trap is closing with his own plan half-assembled and his allies outside fighting for their lives.

The seal breaks on Signet's terms. During Donut's talent performance, with Big Tina dancing at last on stage, Signet makes herself the blood sacrifice that animates her own tattoos, breaking the celestial seal as the Nothing takes her, her lost loved ones stepping out of her skin as living beings. In the battle that follows, Mongo and Kiwi kill Vrah; Donut's potion-boosted Laundry Day spell strips Circe Took's god-armor and her own mantis children devour her; the Sledge completes the zerzura, teleporting the castle and its NPCs, changelings included, to the ninth floor; and Donut's mystery potion restores Kiwi to her true ursine form, Big Tina's lost mother, completing the Recital quest. The AI declares a free-for-all boss battle: the last hunters and high elves are annihilated, Gwendolyn Duet and Cleiton die, Tran loses his legs, and Imogen finally falls to Prepotente, completing Vengeance of the Daughter. In the aftermath, Firas and the Popov brothers are dead, the Popovs reborn as infants and lifted out of the crawl; Katia kills Eva at last; and the Princess Posse learns it holds a place in the ninth floor's Faction Wars, secured by Donut's fan club and Empress D'Nadia. Carl uses the live feed to urge the watching universe to vote away the ninth floor's safety protections before the signal cuts.

The book ends in the wreckage of the Butcher's Masquerade. Signet sacrificed herself to break the gala's celestial peace seal, giving her tattoos permanent life as she was drawn into the Nothing; in the battle that followed, Mongo and Kiwi killed Vrah, Donut stripped Circe Took's god-armor so her own mantis children destroyed her, the last hunters and high elves were wiped out, and Queen Imogen fell to Prepotente, completing the Vengeance of the Daughter storyline. Donut's potion restored Kiwi to her original ursine form, revealing her as Big Tina's lost mother and completing the Recital quest, and the Sledge's borrowed spell teleported the castle and its NPCs, including the changelings, to safety on the ninth floor. The cost was heavy: Firas, Gwendolyn Duet, Cleiton, and the Popov brothers are dead, though the Popovs, restored to infancy by a rebirth effect, are lifted out of the crawl; Britney is badly burned; Tran lost his legs; and Katia killed Eva at last, unaware Eva's final act was to place the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on her head. Carl and Donut learn their team, the Princess Posse, holds a place in the ninth floor's Faction Wars, secured by Donut's fans and Empress D'Nadia, and Carl closes the floor by telling the watching universe to vote to strip the ninth floor's safety protections. In the epilogue the party skips the seventh floor entirely, Prepotente shattering its level with sponsor-supplied items, and arrives on the eighth, where the crown's curse means only one of Katia or Donut can pass the ninth floor.
