One of Judge Miller's gardeners, burdened by gambling debts. He secretly sells Buck to dog traders, beginning the animal's forced journey north.

Perrault (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A Canadian government courier who buys Buck for work carrying dispatches in the Klondike. Experienced and observant, he recognizes the dog's unusual potential.

Appears from the start

Perrault's dog driver, responsible for training and managing the sled team. He handles the dogs firmly but understands their needs and the demands of northern travel.

A friendly Newfoundland dog transported north with Buck. Her trusting approach to the other sled dogs leaves her unprepared for the violence of their new environment.

Spitz (Antagonist)

The white husky who leads François and Perrault's team. Experienced, cunning, and dominant, he regards Buck as a possible rival and uses disorder in the team to protect his own position.

A quiet, hardworking sled dog who cares only about pulling properly and being left alone. He helps teach Buck the discipline of team work through his example.

Hal

An inexperienced American who buys the exhausted sled team with Charles and Mercedes. Impatient and convinced that force can replace knowledge, he ignores advice about travel conditions and the dogs' limits.

Mercedes

First appears in chapter 5

Hal's sister and Charles's wife, traveling with the new owners of Buck's team. She brings too much luggage, resists practical compromises, and is unprepared for the labor and scarcity of the trail.

Charles

First appears in chapter 5

Mercedes's husband and Hal's companion in purchasing the sled team. Like the others, he begins the journey without the experience needed to manage dogs, supplies, or thawing trails.

John Thornton (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

An experienced outdoorsman camped beside a river crossing when Hal's failing team arrives. He recognizes that Buck has reached complete exhaustion and intervenes when Hal tries to force the dog onward.

Yeehats (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

Members of an Indigenous group living in the remote country where Thornton searches for gold. Their attack on Thornton's camp confronts Buck with the final loss of his life among people.
