The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes recap

The final Sherlock Holmes story collection contains twelve independent investigations from the detective's later career. Holmes and Watson confront cases involving coercion, disputed identity, vanished people, suspicious deaths, unusual animals, old scandals, and schemes built around property or reputation. Baker Street remains the usual point of departure, with Mrs Hudson and the page Billy among the familiar household figures, while several cases take Holmes or Watson beyond London. The narrative form varies more than in the earlier collections: Watson remains the principal chronicler, but Holmes relates "The Blanched Soldier" and "The Lion's Mane" himself, and "The Mazarin Stone" uses a third-person presentation. The volume offers no single continuing plot or final career event. Its unity comes from the older partnership, a set of late experiments in viewpoint and tone, and twelve separate mysteries whose individual solutions remain confined to their own stories.
