The story's narrator, a man from an established family who believes Fortunato has repeatedly injured and finally insulted him. Concealing his resentment behind apparent friendship, he designs a punishment that will leave no evidence connecting him to the crime and recounts it many years later.

A wealthy and respected man who takes pride in his knowledge of wine. During carnival he is dressed as a jester and already intoxicated when Montresor asks him to judge a supposed cask of Amontillado. His vanity about wine, and his rivalry with Luchesi, lead him deep into Montresor's family vaults despite his cough and the unhealthy air.

Another local wine connoisseur whom Montresor repeatedly proposes as an alternative judge of the Amontillado. He never appears directly, but Fortunato's insistence that Luchesi cannot reliably distinguish the wine helps Montresor manipulate him into continuing through the vaults.
