The Centennial Tournament recap

Twilight Melody resists Green Rain, then travels to the Centennial Tournament despite Nayra's warning that her hidden homeland is planning war and an operation at the event. Nayra breaks the class bond controlling her growth, while Anrosh becomes an immortal protector through Ryun's inspiration. Ryun finds an Ideal centered on witnessing chosen final ends. Zach arrives with Neha, learns that the Wardens know her concealed identity, and confronts Ryun over the massacre that killed his family, but chooses present duty over immediate revenge. Nayra reaches the top 32 of her solo division. Ryun reaches the High Division top eight before Riki defeats him, then bonds the awakened forge Brightstar. A monster army breaches the arena portal, forcing Ryun and Celia to defend the wall while Twilight Melody evacuates. Ryun gives Celia the other half of the true-death power, permanently linking them. Zach is selected for the attempt to close the still-open portal as the city approaches encirclement.

Previously: Ryun Nacht, a survivor of seventh-iteration Earth, became the head of Twilight Melody in the Infinite Realm. His rise followed violence that left Zacharia Gardner searching for him. Ryun also lost his partner Melody, and the aftermath of her death remains bound to a dangerous true-death power and to a bargain with the Dealmaker. Anrosh Kesh has taken responsibility for Twilight Melody during Ryun's absences, with Nayra serving as one of the sect's strongest fighters and trusted leaders within Twilight Melody. Nayra has separated herself from an influential family and from her twin, Reyla. Zach has meanwhile joined the Wardens and travels with Neha, a shapeshifter whose many bodies belong to one person. Their partnership has become central to both of them, even as Neha's unusual combination of powers threatens her stability. Ryun and Zach are now moving through the same wider world, with their unfinished history still between them.

So far this book: Anrosh advances and returns to find Green Rain pressing Twilight Melody to accept subordinate status. She refuses, rescues captured sect members through a force led by Nayra, and turns the dispute into a formal representative duel. Nayra defeats Green Rain's heir, ending the immediate demand and binding him to service in Twilight Melody. Elsewhere, Kael trades a destructive tournament device to Eric's allies while resisting a larger commitment to their cause. Ryun completes a year of solitary training at the edge of the void. He survives exposure to its ninth tier, gains the essence he needs, and advances to early immortality on the Path of the Final End. He rejects a rebirth that might let him evade his past and instead takes a void-based immortal form. Although his body and power have changed, he still lacks the guiding Ideal he has been seeking. With his advancement complete, he turns back toward Twilight Melody.

Ryun reunites with Ereclaw, tests his new abilities in a dangerous dungeon, and returns to Twilight Melody. Nayra advances, begins a relationship with Anrosh, and helps train Anrosh's daughter Kri under Tali's guidance. The sect receives an invitation to the Centennial Tournament, and Ryun orders the leadership to accept and organize a trading caravan. Before departure, he detects a covert operation centered on Nayra. The captured watcher is Daria, one of Nayra's sisters, who warns that their family may ultimately sanction Nayra's death. Nayra then discloses the larger danger: she comes from a hidden empire founded by exiled third-iteration rankers. That empire is preparing for war against the Core and has an undisclosed plan involving the tournament. Ryun still decides to attend. He keeps Daria in service to repay the intrusion, releases her companions with a warning, and treats any further move against Nayra as a threat to Twilight Melody.

Nayra guides the dead warrior Tio through the ethereal realm, helps him accept his death, and returns with a new boon. She then advances to level 300 and chooses the unique Heart of Gunner class, breaking Reyla's ability to dictate their shared class evolution while preserving their Twin Link. The resulting contact brings Nayra's family conflict into the open. Reyla erases her own cultivation to make room for a different path, while their parents confront the older siblings who considered killing Nayra. They forbid any further attempt on her life. A look into Ryun's past shows why his grief became so dangerous after Melody died: a remnant tied to their divided true-death power fed on his rage and loss. The Dealmaker contained it by sealing the memories and emotions that sustained it, in return for a future favor. Zach and Neha, meanwhile, defeat a Deep Earth Elemental. Zach forms a True Link with Neha, and she removes her cultivation in an attempt to correct her unstable condition. She survives the treatment, and they begin their journey back toward the Wardens and the tournament.

Zach and Neha reach Tournament Territory, where Zach accepts a place on a Warden team. Twilight Melody travels through Dal Dvor while Ryun struggles with grief, loneliness, and his unfinished Ideal. A brief encounter with a powerful traveling cultivator helps him accept that moving forward does not betray Melody, and he begins to understand endings as a source of meaning. At Tournament City, Twilight Melody establishes a compound, registers Nayra for the mid division and Ryun for the High Division, and converts valuable materials into resources for the sect. Ryun's origin as a survivor of seventh-iteration Earth becomes public during registration. Ereclaw is barred from competing as Ryun's partner, while Daria is assigned to protect the compound under her one-year service obligation. Anrosh also asks Ereclaw whether he killed her husband before joining Ryun, but he cannot give a certain answer. Zach trains in private, raises his level, and prepares to serve as the Warden team's concealed advantage in its first qualifier.

Zach helps the Warden team survive its first qualifier and advances to level 359, but further class growth requires an immortal evolution. Watching the Wardens fight convinces Anrosh that Twilight Melody needs a permanent defender. Ryun shares his inspiration with her, allowing her to advance to immortality at the cost of tying her future cultivation development to his. Ryun then wins his own opening qualifier through long-range void shaping and evolves his perception, though the match exposes his limited core capacity. Contact from a great sect draws Ryun and Anrosh to a masquerade, where they meet the High Division contender Riki. Celia, the Spear of Sorrow, offers Ryun personal sponsorship and seeks a closer relationship with Twilight Melody. During the gathering, Ryun encounters an elderly ranker who has chosen true death. He listens to her life and fulfills her request for a final end. The experience completes his Ideal: he will witness, understand, and remember lives at their chosen endings. He gains the power of The Witness of Journey's End, while Celia's offer remains undecided.

Ryun survives the High Division free-for-all and joins its final 32. Zach recognizes him during the broadcast as the man responsible for the massacre that killed Zach's wife and child. Zach confronts him but does not attack. Neha argues that revenge would endanger them, expose her, and threaten the tournament peace, and Zach chooses their shared future and the protection of others over immediate vengeance. The Warden commander then reveals that the Wardens already knew Neha's concealed identity and past. She orders Neha's current Warden identity retired but allows the pair to continue under supervision. While Neha changes bodies, Zach adopts protection rather than revenge as his guiding purpose. He seeks an immortal-class quest from the Dealmaker and chooses the relic-rarity Lord of the Aspects, a demanding solo path involving powerful elementals, dragons, aspect planes, and mastery in combat. The Dealmaker confirms that outside influence did not absolve Ryun of his crimes, and Zach accepts that Ryun alone bears responsibility for them.

Neha returns in a new body, while Zach's Warden team is eliminated after an elite sect isolates him from his allies. Nayra unveils her Scorching Mist path in the solo tournament and wins a difficult match, but an adaptive drake shifter counters her fire and cloud form in the next round. She leaves the competition in the top 32, and all Twilight Melody entrants have improved the sect's reputation despite their defeats. Ryun continues meeting Celia and considers her sponsorship without accepting her undisclosed agenda. Beyond the matches, the threat around the tournament sharpens. Kael breaks with Eric and plans to exploit the disruption expected from the empire's reaction engine for a separate purpose involving a rescued Minotaur spatial savant. Far away, Reyla watches the empire's great swarm absorb another sovereign monster and its forces. The growing invasion is moving toward the Core while imperial armies follow behind it.

Before his opening main-bracket match, Ryun upgrades his second cultivation path and uses an elixir to reform his core for greater capacity. He defeats the rifle specialist Gior by enduring devastating long-range fire and using his new Ideal power to break the attack's momentum. His next match against Riki becomes a contest of repeated bodily destruction and reconstruction. Riki ultimately wins with a newly acquired Ideal after Ryun declines to use his own most decisive ability. Ryun still earns a top-eight reward and bonds an awakened forge named Brightstar, which can store, repair, reproduce, and improve equipment. The tournament then collapses into crisis when an apparently endless monster force pours through the arena portal. Monsters already in Tournament City move to encircle the defenders. Ryun sends Ereclaw to help Anrosh evacuate Twilight Melody and joins Celia on the arena wall. He gives Celia the complementary half of the true-death power once shared with Melody, granting them a joint slowing power and binding their minds and emotions until one dies. Zach and Neha remain with the Wardens. The commander prepares to protect Zach during an attempt to close the portal, while a separate force secures the healing building for evacuation. A distant assault briefly clears part of the horde, but the portal remains open and the defenders are still close to encirclement.

Ryun's High Division run ends in the top eight when Riki uses a newly gained Ideal to defeat him. Ryun bonds the awakened forge Brightstar as his reward, but the tournament is then overtaken by a portal breach. An apparently endless monster force pours into the arena while more monsters move through Tournament City to surround the defenders. Ryun sends Ereclaw to help Anrosh evacuate Twilight Melody and joins Celia in holding the wall. He gives Celia the complementary half of the true-death power once shared with Melody, linking Ryun and Celia mentally and emotionally until one of them dies. Zach and Neha remain with the Warden response. The commander considers Zach essential to closing the portal and prepares to protect him during the attempt, while another group secures the healing building as a possible evacuation route. The portal is still open, the defenders are nearly encircled, and the empire's advancing swarm and Kael's separate operation remain unresolved.
