Adam was born into the Cayhall family but grew up using a different surname after his parents tried to escape its history. Taking the case forces him to confront both his grandfather and the secrecy that shaped his childhood.

An FBI agent whose knowledge reaches back to the violent campaign surrounding the bombing. He knows that the official account left important people and facts outside the courtroom, making him a valuable but guarded source for Adam's investigation.

The Jewish civil-rights lawyer targeted by the office bombing for which Sam was convicted. His twin sons were killed when they entered the building, and the destruction of his family remains at the moral center of the case.

Marvin Kramer's wife and the mother of the two boys killed in the bombing. Her family's loss stands behind the state's determination to carry out Sam's sentence and complicates every attempt to discuss the case only as a question of procedure.
