The City and the Stars recap

A billion years in the future, Alvin is born into Diaspar, Earth's last great city, whose near-immortal citizens are repeatedly recreated from stored patterns and are terrified of the world outside. As a rare person without past lives, he questions the city's fixed order. With the Jester Khedron's help he finds an ancient transit route to Lys, a hidden society of mortal telepaths living close to nature, and befriends Hilvar. Their explorations lead to a spacecraft, a stranded robot, and Vanamonde, a developing intelligence of enormous potential. Evidence from these encounters disproves humanity's founding legend: no alien Invaders defeated Earth. Galactic civilization withdrew after the disastrous creation of the Mad Mind, and Vanamonde is intended eventually to oppose it. Alvin reconnects Diaspar and Lys, breaks their inherited isolation, and chooses the long work of restoring Earth and returning humanity to the stars.

In the remote future, Diaspar stands sealed against Earth's surrounding desert. Its citizens live for centuries, return their personality patterns to the Central Computer, and are eventually embodied again with memories of earlier lives. Alvin is different: he is a Unique, entering the world without a remembered past. He is fascinated by the city but refuses its universal fear of the outdoors and of space. His tutor Jeserac and companion Alystra cannot satisfy his questions about why humanity abandoned the stars. Diaspar's records present a simple answer: terrible Invaders defeated the old galactic empire and drove the survivors back to Earth. Alvin suspects that the official memory conceals more than it explains and begins searching the city's changing streets and ancient systems for a way beyond the walls.

Alvin attracts Khedron, the city's Jester, whose role permits him to disturb Diaspar's settled patterns. Together they trace forgotten clues to an underground transport station. A functioning vehicle carries Alvin through the desert to Lys, proving that Diaspar is not Earth's only surviving community. Lys is green, open, and decentralized. Its people accept natural death, raise children, and communicate telepathically; their way of life preserves qualities that Diaspar traded for permanence. Seranis and the other leaders of Lys examine Alvin and decide not to erase his memories. Her son Hilvar becomes his guide and friend. Alvin learns that the two societies were deliberately separated and that each possesses only part of humanity's past.

Alvin and Hilvar explore beyond Lys and encounter strange survivals from the era when humanity traveled among the stars. Their discoveries point them toward Shalmirane, where legend says the ancient defenders of Earth made their stand. Alvin's presence also destabilizes Diaspar: Khedron has completed his intervention, and the city must respond to a citizen who has returned from the supposedly empty world outside. The Central Computer reveals that Alvin's uniqueness is not a random failure of the memory banks. Diaspar's designers anticipated that perfect stability could become paralysis and arranged for rare individuals able to challenge it. Alvin is one of these agents of change, although his choices are his own.

A recovered spacecraft lets Alvin and Hilvar leave Earth. On a distant planet they find an artificial community created around a long-dead religious teacher known as the Master. The surviving robot is constrained by commands that prevent it from freely revealing what happened, but Alvin brings it away and gradually finds ways around its restrictions. Further exploration leads the friends to Vanamonde, a nonmaterial mind with extraordinary powers and the innocence of a child. They return to Earth with both witnesses. The telepaths of Lys can communicate with Vanamonde more directly than Alvin can and begin assembling a history far different from the fear-based account preserved in Diaspar.

Vanamonde and the robot reveal that the legendary Invaders never drove humanity from the Galaxy. The old civilization created a purely mental being whose power exceeded its stability. This Mad Mind devastated worlds before it was confined beyond the Galaxy. Most galactic peoples then departed, while plans were laid for an intelligence capable of meeting the danger in the distant future. Vanamonde is that intended successor, still growing toward its task. The truth removes the central justification for Earth's retreat. Alvin brings Diaspar and Lys back into contact and begins dismantling the psychological barriers that kept both societies incomplete. Hilvar chooses the living landscape and telepathic bonds of Lys, while Alvin looks outward. He sets himself to restoring Earth's lost oceans and to preparing humanity to travel again, accepting that renewal will take generations rather than one dramatic journey.

The records of the Master's robot and Vanamonde's mind overturn the legend that humanity was defeated and driven back to Earth by alien Invaders. Long ago, galactic civilization created a disembodied intelligence called the Mad Mind; after it devastated inhabited worlds, the survivors confined it far away and left the Galaxy while preparing a greater intelligence to confront it. Vanamonde is that still-growing successor. Earth's isolation arose from fear and deliberate social design, not military defeat. Alvin returns with knowledge that breaks the closed assumptions of both Diaspar and Lys. Movement between the two societies resumes, and the old contrast between immortal urban stability and mortal natural life begins to soften. Hilvar remains attached to Lys, while Alvin accepts that his task is larger than reaching one destination. He turns toward restoring Earth's environment, renewing contact with the stars, and preparing humanity to rejoin the wider universe when the time is right.
