The Courtship of Miles Standish recap

He agrees to serve as Standish's messenger even though success would end his own hopes.

John visits Priscilla and delivers Standish's formal offer, emphasizing the captain's courage, standing, and ability to protect a household. Priscilla is unimpressed by a proposal made through another man and asks about Standish's temper and lack of tenderness. John continues defending his absent friend despite his own feelings. Priscilla recognizes the conflict and asks why John does not speak for himself. He leaves shaken, unable either to betray Standish openly or to deny what has passed between him and Priscilla. Meanwhile Standish joins an armed expedition during a period of fear and tension. News later reaches Plymouth that he has been killed. The report seems to remove the obstacle between John and Priscilla, but it also burdens their happiness with grief and with John's unresolved sense of obligation to his friend.

John and Priscilla prepare for marriage, and the Plymouth community gathers for their wedding. The report of Standish's death proves mistaken: he returns alive from the expedition. Instead of renewing the quarrel, he meets the couple at the close of their wedding journey and accepts that Priscilla made her own choice. Standish acknowledges John as the better match for her and offers his goodwill. John and Priscilla begin married life, and John and Standish repair the friendship that the borrowed proposal had nearly destroyed.

John Alden and Priscilla Mullins marry in Plymouth, and their wedding procession travels from the ceremony to their new home. Miles Standish, who had been reported dead during the colony's fighting, has returned alive.
