A twelve-year-old basketball player, student, and verse narrator known for speed, confidence, and long locks. He shares the court with his twin brother, Jordan, and measures much of life through the rhythms and rules of basketball.

Jordan Bell (Supporting)

Also known as JB

Appears from the start

Josh's twin brother, teammate, and closest companion. He is a gifted shooter with an easy social confidence that complements Josh's aggressive play. The brothers' shared routines begin to change as Jordan becomes interested in a girl at school.

Chuck Bell (Supporting)

Also known as Da Man

Appears from the start

Josh and Jordan's father, a charismatic former professional basketball player who starred overseas. He trains his sons, tells stories about his playing days, and fills the family with humor and competitive energy. He no longer plays professionally and resists discussing his health.

Crystal Bell (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Josh and Jordan's mother and the assistant principal at their school. Warm but firm, she expects the twins to meet high standards in class and at home. She also worries about Chuck's diet, blood pressure, and refusal to seek medical care.

Alexis (Supporting)

Also known as Miss Sweet Tea

First appears in chapter 2

A new student who catches Jordan's attention. Josh first knows her through the nickname he gives her and sees her as the person drawing his brother away from their usual closeness.
