In short (whole book)
After Amy Anson repairs Slipwing and joins the expedition, Dash recovers an unseen power core and discovers the forge, a vast facility that built the archetype. Golden drones expose the installation, so the crew races to Shylock for a level-two core and returns with eight members of an order that guarded it. A Golden harbinger attacks before the core can power the forge. Conover and Amy find and disable a hidden drone that is blocking the station, enabling forge weapons to cripple the harbinger before Dash destroys it. Leira and Slipwing are left falling into the system star, but Leira uses the lens to shrink the star temporarily while Dash carries the ship clear. The survivors regroup at the forge with the harbinger's remains. Since its transmission probably alerted the Golden, they expect a larger assault within months. Dash resumes the search for cores needed to unlock the forge's true function as a weapon intended to end the war.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Independent courier Dash, formally Newton Sawyer, is drawn into a conflict involving the ancient unseen and their enemies, the Golden. He becomes mentally linked to Sentinel, an unseen AI that recognizes him as the Messenger and helps him operate a powerful combat machine called the archetype. Dash escapes with the damaged Slipwing after taking aboard Leira and her longtime partner Viktor. Leira carries an alien lens whose purpose remains uncertain, while Viktor contributes engineering expertise. Conover, the young nephew of Dash's creditor Pinetti, also joins under an open-ended bargain that leaves Dash responsible for his passage and care. Conover's implanted eye lenses give him unusual insight into unfamiliar technology. The small crew now faces the practical burden of repairing Slipwing as well as the much larger task attached to Dash's new identity. The archetype needs power cores, Sentinel's knowledge is incomplete, and the Golden threat extends far beyond the crew's immediate financial problems.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Amy Anson, Leira's cousin and a capable mechanic, assesses Slipwing's extensive damage at Passage. With the crew unable to afford full repairs, she begins work through an unofficial IOU, then offers to supply repairs and fuel if Dash takes her along. After learning about the archetype, the unseen, and the Golden, Amy joins the expedition. The restored ship and concealed archetype depart to collect scattered power cores. On the first retrieval, Dash and Leira remove a core from an unseen facility and narrowly escape intelligent pack hunters that damage their suits. Installing the core modestly strengthens the archetype, teaches Dash to read unseen writing, and opens records of a recurring war in which the Golden seek to eliminate sentient life. The records also reveal the forge, the installation where the archetype was largely constructed. Dash chooses to investigate it. Hidden inside a moon, the forge initially attacks because its depleted systems cannot identify the archetype reliably. Sentinel establishes contact, and the crew enters. There Custodian, the forge's AI, confirms Dash as the Messenger. The forge can repair the archetype and Slipwing from abundant raw material, but it cannot create power cores and remains mostly dormant. Custodian tells Dash that the next required cores are already somewhere aboard the facility.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Dash and the crew install three level-one cores, restoring basic forge functions, but twenty-four Golden drones arrive. Dash destroys most in the archetype and captures the last inside the forge, where Conover and Amy remove its data module. The drone was meant to detonate within the station, and its information suggests a stronger Golden force will follow within days. Since the forge lacks enough power for weapons or movement, Dash decides to retrieve a level-two core from Shylock. Dash, Leira, and Conover trace it to an unseen complex beneath the city. A robed leader reveals that his secret order has guarded the core for two centuries while waiting for the Messenger. The order also holds a level-one core. Clan Shirna arrives as Dash takes both. During the escape, two order members die and Conover kills an attacker in close combat. Eight survivors join the crowded Slipwing, which leaves despite orders from local traffic control. On the return journey, the order leader gives Dash a hereditary unseen data module intended for the Messenger. The team now carries both cores back to the forge while facing pursuit from Clan Shirna and the more immediate prospect of a Golden attack.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
The crew reaches the forge just before a Golden mech called the harbinger enters the system. Dash installs the new level-one core in the archetype, gaining a powered sword, while the others work on the forge's level-two core. Dash and Leira engage the enemy, but the new core remains inert even after Viktor installs it. The harbinger's ability to shift partly into the dark between makes it difficult to track, and its weapons severely damage the archetype. Leira draws it away in Slipwing while Dash struggles to restore his systems. Conover questions Custodian's claim that the forge has no fault, leading maintenance remotes to discover a Golden drone hidden in a hull breach. The infiltrator has concealed itself from forge security and interrupted the power path. Conover and Amy travel outside the station to reach it. Meanwhile, Dash lures the harbinger to a brown dwarf, where radiation weakens its attack enough for him to damage it. The enemy then turns back toward the forge. Slipwing's fusion system becomes unstable, forcing Leira to shut down the drive. Her ship is now falling toward the system star, while the forge remains powerless and Conover and Amy are inside the breached compartment trying to disable the adaptive drone.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Conover and Amy cannot stop the hidden Golden drone by removing a single part because it redistributes its functions across linked modules. Custodian suppresses technology in the compartment while they dismantle it, leaving their suits without life support. The monk brings unseen-made auxiliaries devised with Viktor and Custodian, restoring their air long enough for the group to move the detached modules away from the forge. The drone finally shuts down, the level-two core activates, and forge missiles cripple the harbinger. Dash finishes it with the archetype's sword. Leira and the disabled Slipwing are still falling toward the star. Custodian, Viktor, Amy, and Conover devise a rescue using the lens, despite a significant risk of causing a supernova. Leira temporarily shrinks the star, and Dash catches the overheating ship with the archetype, shields it, and pushes both craft clear before she restores the star. They return alive but heat-damaged. Custodian concludes that the harbinger probably transmitted a warning, so a full Golden force may arrive within months. Amy and Conover begin studying its remains, while Viktor and the order members investigate the forge. Additional cores become the priority because they will unlock stronger systems and the forge's deeper purpose - ending the war against the Golden.
How does it end? (ending)
Dash destroys the Golden harbinger after Conover, Amy, and the monk disable its hidden drone, allowing the forge's level-two core and weapons to activate. Leira is still falling toward the system star aboard the crippled Slipwing, but she uses the lens to shrink the star temporarily while Dash catches and shields the ship with the archetype. Both return alive, although Slipwing and the archetype are badly heat-damaged. The recovered harbinger remains at the forge for Amy and Conover to study, while Viktor and the surviving order members investigate the installation. Custodian believes the harbinger warned the Golden, making surveillance and smaller attacks possible before a full force arrives in several months. The forge has limited cloaking and defensive power, but it needs more cores to unlock its greater systems and fulfill its purpose of ending the war. Dash therefore leads the renewed core-recovery effort with Sentinel, Leira, and the rest of the alliance. Amy's repair IOU, Conover's arrangement with Pinetti, the order's wanted status, and the larger intentions of both the unseen and the Golden remain unresolved.
