The last gunslinger of Gilead, driven by a lifelong quest for the Dark Tower, the linchpin that holds all worlds together. This book opens with Roland alone on the shore of the Western Sea, soon gravely wounded and fevered, needing help to go on.

A young man from late-twentieth-century New York, quick-tongued, wry, and in the grip of a heroin habit, living under the thumb of his older brother and a mob dealer. Roland reaches him through a door that opens onto his mind, the first of the three the gunslinger must draw. Beneath the addiction Eddie is brave and clever, and the crossing into Roland's world offers him a chance at a harder, freer life.

A woman from 1960s New York, drawn through the second door as another of the three. Wealthy, educated, and active in the civil-rights movement, she lost her legs to a subway accident and uses a wheelchair. She is not, however, a single settled self: a hard and hidden second nature contends within her, and reconciling the two is central to her becoming whole in Roland's world.

A respectable-seeming man of 1970s New York who is secretly a compulsive killer, choosing victims at random and pushing or dropping things on them from hiding. Roland reaches him through the third door. His past crimes prove tangled with the gunslinger's own story in ways that make him more than a stranger.

Eddie's older brother in New York, who introduced him to heroin and keeps him close through a mix of dependence and guilt. Once Eddie's protector, he has become a burden dragging on his younger brother's life and choices.

A New York mob boss for whom Eddie is smuggling drugs. Coldly dangerous and fond of building card houses while he waits, he runs his operation from a bar and expects his deals to go exactly as arranged, making him a deadly problem when Eddie's run goes wrong.
