A vigorous young poet, mountain climber, and student of Zen Buddhism whom Ray meets in the San Francisco Bay Area. Japhy combines scholarship and meditation with physical work, simple living, sexual freedom, and enthusiasm for the wilderness. Ray quickly sees him as a friend and spiritual example.

A poet and friend who shares a small cottage with Ray near Berkeley. Alvah participates in the area's literary gatherings and joins Ray and Japhy in their talk, drinking, and experiments with a freer communal life.
