In short (whole book)

In a future Shanghai shaped by nanotechnology and competing cultural enclaves, engineer John Hackworth creates an adaptive educational book for a neo-Victorian lord's granddaughter and secretly copies it for his own daughter. The illicit copy is stolen and reaches Nell, a neglected girl in a poor district. Through stories, exercises, and the live performances of actress Miranda Redpath, the Primer teaches Nell literacy, strategy, self-defense, and independence. Hackworth is blackmailed by Dr. X into helping the Celestial Kingdom develop decentralized Seed technology, while Nell escapes abuse, finds protectors, and eventually attends an elite academy. The girls educated by related Primers do not all follow the same path: their books cultivate rebellion as much as conformity. Amid a violent Chinese uprising, Nell becomes leader of the Mouse Army, an immense body of girls raised through the Primer system. She then enters the Drummers' underwater realm and rescues Miranda, finally meeting the woman whose voice helped raise her.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

In a future where matter compilers can manufacture goods from centralized Feeds, society is organized into phyles whose members share culture and law. Around Shanghai, the neo-Victorian New Atlantis phyle combines advanced technology with strict manners and hierarchy. Lord Finkle-McGraw worries that this order produces dutiful people without the independence that its founders possessed. He commissions engineer John Hackworth to build a unique interactive book, the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, for his granddaughter Elizabeth. The book will observe its reader, teach through an evolving fairy tale, and call on live network performers when human judgment is needed. Hackworth realizes that the design could benefit his own daughter Fiona and secretly prepares an unauthorized copy.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Hackworth's illicit Primer is stolen before it reaches Fiona. Harv, a street boy, takes it during a mugging and gives it to his younger sister Nell, who lives with him and their neglectful mother. The book recognizes Nell as its owner and begins adapting its lessons to her dangerous surroundings. Its fantasy adventures teach reading, reasoning, and ways to respond to abuse. Miranda Redpath, an interactive performer at the Theatre Parnasse, is repeatedly selected to supply the Primer's voice. She becomes emotionally invested in Nell despite not knowing the child's identity. Judge Fang investigates the technology around the theft, while Hackworth's breach draws him toward Dr. X and the competing ambitions of the Celestial Kingdom.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Nell's education becomes inseparable from survival. With the Primer's guidance and Harv's protection, she learns to recognize danger and escape the men who cycle through their mother's home. Hackworth is forced to work for Dr. X, who wants an alternative to Feed technology: a decentralized Seed that could spread without depending on infrastructure controlled by foreign phyles. Hackworth enters the mysterious Drummers, a collective whose linked bodies and unconscious computation may contain the insight needed for the project. Nell and Harv separate as their paths narrow. Nell eventually finds shelter with Constable Moore, a retired soldier who supplements the Primer's lessons with discipline, security, and practical training.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Nell's abilities earn her a place at Miss Matheson's academy, where she encounters Elizabeth and Fiona, the two other girls shaped by versions of Hackworth's Primer. Their common educational tool has not made them identical. Each has interpreted its stories through a different life, and each begins questioning the society around her. Elizabeth rejects neo-Victorian expectations most openly, while Fiona searches for a path connected to performance and to her absent father. Nell can master the academy's work but remains socially marked by her origins. Miranda continues trying to identify and reach the girl she has effectively raised through years of narration. Her devotion leads her beyond ordinary interactive performance toward the Drummers' collective.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Chinese resistance to the foreign coastal order grows into organized rebellion. Dr. X's plans, the search for Seed technology, and the education of a huge population of abandoned girls converge. These girls have received simplified Primers and recognize Nell as a leader and maternal figure, forming the Mouse Army around her. Hackworth returns from his long immersion among the Drummers changed by the collective experience and continues to occupy an uncertain position between New Atlantis and the Celestial Kingdom's technological ambitions. The established enclaves can no longer contain the social consequences of tools designed to teach independence. As fighting spreads, Nell's safety and future depend less on admission to an elite society than on the new community of educated girls gathering around her.

Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)

The uprising transforms Shanghai and destroys the security of the old settlements. Nell leads the Mouse Army, whose members use the skills and shared stories given to them by the Primer network. Miranda, still seeking the child behind her years of performance, has entered the underwater world of the Drummers and is in danger of losing herself within their collective. Nell follows the connection that has linked them since childhood, reaches the Drummers' domain, and rescues Miranda. They finally meet face to face, joining Nell with the human presence that had guided her through the book. Nell ends not as a dependent accepted by New Atlantis but as the founder of a powerful new social body. The Primer has fulfilled Finkle-McGraw's hope of producing independent minds, though on a scale and among people the established elite never intended to empower.

How does it end? (ending)

Revolutionary conflict overturns the settlements around Shanghai. Nell has become the leader and symbolic mother of the vast Mouse Army, girls educated through simplified Primers derived from the same system that raised her. The army helps her survive the uprising and gives her power independent of the established phyles. Miranda, whose years of live performance made her the emotional voice behind Nell's Primer, has entered the Drummers' submerged collective while searching for a deeper connection with Nell. Guided by what she has learned, Nell penetrates the Drummers' domain and rescues Miranda. Their meeting finally brings the pupil and unseen surrogate mother together in person. Hackworth's effort to create a Seed-based alternative to centralized nanotechnological Feeds remains tied to the social transformation around them. The old neo-Victorian, Chinese, and coastal orders are no longer stable, while Nell emerges able to found a new community rather than merely enter one designed by others.
