The first man and the writer of the collection's opening diary. He approaches Eden as a place to classify, manage, and keep orderly, preferring solitude and practical experiments to conversation. The sudden arrival of another human puzzles him, and he initially treats her curiosity and habit of naming everything as intrusions.

The first woman, newly awake in Eden and intensely interested in everything around her. She names animals and landscapes by instinct, experiments freely, and seeks companionship from Adam even when he retreats from her. Her own diary gives the second half of the collection its more emotional viewpoint.

A talking creature who approaches Eve at the forbidden tree and challenges the warning attached to its fruit. Adam regards it with suspicion, while Eve is drawn to the prospect of knowledge.

The first child born to Adam and Eve. Adam initially cannot determine what kind of creature Cain is and conducts comic observations as the infant grows, while Eve understands and protects him.
