Marv has helped arrange a larger theft for the night the bar serves as the neighborhood's cash drop, using Deeds as the robber. Deeds takes Nadia hostage, but Bob shoots him at the bar and reveals that his harmless appearance has long concealed lethal violence, including his role in Richie Whelan's disappearance. The Chechens remove Deeds and kill Marv. Bob remains at the bar and, after uncertainty, begins to reconnect with Nadia.

After closing one night, Bob hears movement in a trash bin outside Nadia Dunn's home and discovers a badly treated pit-bull puppy. Nadia helps him clean and feed the animal, though Bob has never owned a dog and is unsure what to do. He decides to keep the puppy, names him Rocco, and begins returning to Nadia for advice. The responsibility breaks into Bob's solitary routine and creates a cautious connection between them. Meanwhile, Marv broods over the power and respect he has lost since the Chechens took his bar.

Two masked men rob Cousin Marv's after closing, taking money that belongs to the Chechen owners. Detective Torres investigates and quickly understands that the theft will bring consequences outside the law. The criminals who control the bar hold Marv and Bob responsible for making the loss good. Eric Deeds, a local man known for his violent reputation and his past connection to Nadia, appears in Bob's life and claims that Rocco is his dog. He treats the puppy less as a pet than as leverage, demanding money and making Bob aware that Nadia is also afraid of him. The pressure from Deeds and from the bar's owners grows while Marv conceals more knowledge of the robbery than he admits.

Bob tries to protect Rocco through formal ownership and continues drawing closer to Nadia, although Deeds's intrusions keep both of them guarded. Torres follows the robbery through the neighborhood's evasions and old stories, including the unexplained disappearance of Richie Whelan, a killing Deeds has allowed others to associate with him. The stolen cash is recovered only after the Chechen organization answers the robbery with its own violence. Marv's financial strain and resentment become increasingly urgent. Rather than accept his reduced position, he plans to exploit the coming night when Cousin Marv's will hold the collected money from multiple criminal businesses.

Cousin Marv's is selected as the next drop bar, making it the temporary repository for a large amount of Chechen cash. Marv's earlier connection to the robbery resolves into a more ambitious plan: Eric Deeds will take the full drop, allowing Marv to escape his debts and regain some sense of control. Deeds intensifies his threats toward Bob and uses Nadia's fear of him to keep her within reach. Bob seems compliant, but his careful attention to the bar, the dog, and the people around him suggests that he is preparing for the confrontation rather than surrendering to it. Torres remains suspicious but lacks evidence that would penetrate either the criminal organization or the neighborhood's code of silence.

On drop night, Deeds holds Nadia under threat and enters the bar to steal the accumulated cash. Bob faces him calmly and then shoots him, revealing that his withdrawn manner has concealed both experience and a willingness to kill. The confrontation also exposes the truth behind an older neighborhood mystery: Bob, not Deeds, killed Richie Whelan years ago, while Marv helped conceal the crime. The Chechen owners accept Bob's defense of their money and remove Deeds's body. Marv's scheme fails, and he is killed before he can get free of the people he tried to rob. Detective Torres sees enough to suspect the shape of the truth but cannot prove it. Bob remains behind the bar, now occupying the place Marv once pretended was his. Nadia initially withdraws after learning what Bob is capable of, but she later agrees to walk with him and Rocco, offering a tentative continuation of their relationship.

On the night Cousin Marv's holds the neighborhood's criminal drop money, Eric Deeds keeps Nadia under threat and goes to the bar to take the cash. Bob refuses to be intimidated and shoots him. In explaining the aftermath, Bob reveals the capacity for violence that his mild exterior has hidden, including his responsibility for Richie Whelan's long-ago death. The Chechen owners accept Bob's handling of the immediate threat and dispose of Deeds's body; Marv, whose attempt to steal the drop created the crisis, is killed before he can escape the consequences. Bob is left running the bar under its true owners rather than under Marv's pretended authority. Detective Torres understands that the neighborhood's old mysteries and its present violence reach further than he can prove. Bob visits Nadia after a period of uncertainty, and she agrees to walk with him and Rocco, leaving him with the possibility of companionship despite what she now knows about him.
