The narrator, who grows up in the Dutch House outside Philadelphia under the protection of his older sister Maeve. He remembers family history through places, repeated stories, and what Maeve tells him. His father's expectations and his sister's sacrifices shape his education and work long after he leaves the house.

Danny's older sister and closest companion. Exceptionally intelligent, forceful, and attentive to him, she remembers their absent mother and the family's earlier life more clearly than Danny can.
