The Emperor of Nihon-Ja recap

Horace and George are visiting Nihon-Ja when the Senshi lord Arisaka rebels against Emperor Shigeru's reforms. Horace stays with the Emperor while George carries warning away. Shigeru, his cousin Shukin and a shrinking band of loyalists flee toward remote country; Shukin dies buying them time. In Araluen, Cassandra, Alyss, Will and Halt organise a rescue, aided on the voyage by Gundar Hardstriker and Selethen. Horace reaches a hidden Kikori community and turns farmers and woodsmen into a disciplined infantry force, adapting the Skandian shield wall so they can withstand heavily trained Senshi. The rescue party eventually joins him and contributes Ranger archery, improvised weapons and wider military experience. In the final battle, Shigeru's mixed force defeats the rebellion and Arisaka is killed. The Emperor returns to power with the Kikori's courage publicly established. Horace and Cassandra acknowledge their love, and the reunited companions begin the journey home.

Previously: Will trained as a Ranger under Halt and became one of Horace's closest friends. Together they helped defeat Morgarath, survived the conflict in Skandia and later protected Araluen from threats at Macindaw. Will and the Courier Alyss acknowledged their love after she was rescued from Keren. Princess Cassandra, who travelled under the name Evanlyn during her captivity with Will, is King Duncan's heir and has developed a close bond with Horace. The friends also gained allies abroad, including the Skandian captain Gundar Hardstriker and the Arridi commander Selethen. Most recently, Will, Halt and Horace broke the Outsiders' power in Clonmel and pursued Tennyson until his movement was destroyed. Horace has since travelled to the distant country of Nihon-Ja with George Carter, another former Redmont ward, as part of a visit intended for study and diplomacy rather than war.

Horace and George are guests in Nihon-Ja, where Horace studies the methods and discipline of the Senshi warrior class. Emperor Shigeru takes an interest in the Araluen knight because Horace treats rank as a responsibility rather than a licence to dominate others. Shigeru has been pressing the same principle in his own government, seeking fairer treatment for common people and less automatic privilege for powerful Senshi lords. That policy has created serious opposition. The visit changes character as reports of unrest gather around Arisaka, a senior lord with enough armed retainers and allied houses to challenge the Emperor rather than merely argue with him.

Arisaka's opposition becomes open rebellion. Shigeru is away from the strongest centres of imperial power and cannot assume that every Senshi commander will honour his title. Horace chooses to remain with him, judging that leaving a threatened host would violate both friendship and duty. Shigeru's cousin Shukin organises the immediate defence and guides the reduced party away from forces trying to capture or kill the Emperor. George is better suited to carrying news than to a running fight, so the companions' survival also depends on warning reaching people who can bring help. The fugitives move toward country where Arisaka's armoured warriors cannot use their numbers as easily.

Shigeru's party is repeatedly pressed by the rebel pursuit. Shukin stays behind at a critical point to delay Arisaka's warriors and is killed, giving the Emperor and Horace the time they need to escape. They reach a remote Kikori community whose farmers and woodsmen are loyal to Shigeru but have neither the equipment nor the status of Senshi. Horace sees that they cannot become expert swordsmen quickly enough to meet Arisaka on his terms. He begins looking for a formation that will let disciplined groups survive against individually superior fighters. Elsewhere, George's warning sets a rescue in motion: Cassandra, Alyss, Will and Halt commit themselves to finding Horace and the displaced Emperor.

Horace adapts the shield-wall methods he learned from the Skandians, training the Kikori to hold close ranks and combine simple weapons so that Senshi cannot defeat them one at a time. Their work ethic and trust in Shigeru begin to turn a refuge into an army. The Emperor also seeks loyal Senshi who will oppose Arisaka without abandoning the reforms that caused the rebellion. The Araluen rescue party makes the long voyage with help from Gundar Hardstriker and Selethen, surviving the hazards of unfamiliar seas and reaching Nihon-Ja with little certainty about Horace's location. Will and Halt then apply Ranger tracking to connect scattered reports of the rebellion with the route taken by Shigeru's party.

The searchers reunite with Horace and Shigeru's supporters. The Kikori can now manoeuvre as a body, but Arisaka still has more trained warriors, better armour and confidence that commoners will break when charged. Will and Halt study how to interrupt that advantage with concentrated archery and improvised battlefield devices, while Selethen and Gundar contribute experience from very different kinds of fighting. Cassandra and Alyss help hold the alliance together around Shigeru's legitimate authority. The coming battle is designed not to imitate Senshi warfare but to force Arisaka against a combination he has not prepared for: a stable infantry wall, missiles capable of threatening armour and loyal Senshi willing to stand beside the Kikori.

Arisaka commits his Senshi against Shigeru's mixed force, expecting the Kikori to scatter. Horace's training holds: the close formation absorbs the assault while Ranger archery and adapted weapons reduce the rebels' advantage in armour. Loyal Senshi support the Emperor, and the battle turns against the coup. Arisaka is defeated and killed, ending the immediate challenge to Shigeru's rule. The Emperor is restored with new evidence that courage and service are not confined to a hereditary warrior class; the Kikori who protected him have earned public honour and a place in the settlement that follows. Horace is reunited with the friends who crossed the world to find him. He and Cassandra acknowledge their love, Will and Alyss remain together, and George, Gundar and Selethen share in the successful rescue. With Nihon-Ja secure under Shigeru, the visitors prepare to return home.

Shigeru's Kikori force holds together against Arisaka's Senshi because Horace has given ordinary workers a disciplined formation that can resist individually superior warriors. Will, Halt and their companions add ranged weapons, fieldcraft and tactical changes suited to the enemy's armour. Loyal Senshi join the Emperor, and Arisaka is defeated and killed in the decisive fighting. Shigeru is restored as the acknowledged Emperor rather than becoming a dependent figure protected by foreign visitors. The Kikori have demonstrated courage and military value that the old hierarchy denied them, strengthening Shigeru's effort to govern across class divisions and curb the Senshi's inherited privileges. The surviving Araluens and their allies reunite after the long separation. Horace and Cassandra are open about the bond that drew her across the world to find him, while Will and Alyss remain together after tensions caused by the journey. George's warning and Gundar and Selethen's help have all contributed to the rescue. With the rebellion ended and Shigeru secure, the visitors leave Nihon-Ja for home.
