The Enemy

By Lee Child

The eighth Jack Reacher novel opens at the start of 1990 with Major Jack Reacher investigating the death of Major General Kenneth Kramer, found dead of an apparent heart attack in an off-post motel during an unexplained detour from his official travel plans. When Kramer's missing briefcase and a fled companion raise questions, Reacher and Lieutenant Summer trace leads toward a woman with unusual vehicle access on Fort Bird, only for the case to escalate sharply after Kramer's widow is found murdered in her home. The inquiry is interrupted when Reacher's brother summons him to Paris to see their dying mother, and on his return he finds his superior reassigned, himself briefly detained by a hostile new commanding officer, and a fresh homicide waiting at Fort Bird.
