The Eye of the Bedlam Bride recap

By Matt Dinniman

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

The eighth floor recreates pre-collapse Earth from human memories: squads start in remembered cities, Carl and Donut in Havana, and must capture monsters and people as playing cards to fill their rosters, then win keys and survive a last free-for-all. They befriend the crawlers Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines, lose the first two to an offended god and learn Ines is far more dangerous than she looks, and cut deals with gods, the rogue dungeon AI, and the spider demigod Shi Maria, the Bedlam Bride, who holds Samantha. Katia, cursed by the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, needs a divine boon to survive the ninth floor, so Carl helps her assassinate Astrid of the Desperado Club, and takes a secret bargain with the goddess Eileithyia. The system rebuilds Carl's father's death and makes him fight through it. Phase three collapses into apocalypse: a demon eviction floods the floor, exits fail, and the crawlers escape only by freeing the demon prince Amayon to cast a global teleport that rips open the stairwells. Quan Ch dies; Lucia Mar descends; Shi Maria merges herself into Carl's chest as a living tattoo. The party lands on the ninth floor as Faction Wars begins, while the Syndicate sends an army of mercenaries down after them.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Earth was collapsed into an eighteen-floor broadcast dungeon. Across six floors Carl and the talking cat Princess Donut became the crawl's biggest stars and its most dangerous saboteurs, with the manager Mordecai, dinosaur Mongo, doll-headed goddess-fragment Samantha, and the doppelganger Katia, who now leads her own team. Carl holds the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, acolyte status with the fire god Emberus, and a history of catastrophic sabotage including flooding Larracos on the ninth floor. On the sixth floor, the Hunting Grounds, the party exterminated the trophy hunters; Signet sacrificed herself to break the Butcher's Masquerade's peace seal; Miriam Dom chose death to cure the vampirism spreading from her; Vrah, Circe Took, and Queen Imogen were killed; the changelings were teleported to safety; and Katia killed Eva, whose dying act cursed her with the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, meaning only one of Katia and Donut can pass the ninth floor. The Princess Posse holds a seat in the ninth floor's Faction Wars. The party skipped the seventh floor entirely, Prepotente shattering its level with sponsor-supplied items, and descended to the eighth.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

A prologue reaches back decades to Mordecai's own crawl: at the end of his tenth floor he chose a death that would save his team, and Odette convinced the prize-keeper Chaco to save them another way, a bargain that freed Odette from indenture, killed Mordecai's brother Uzzi, and left Mordecai carrying the debt ever since. In the present, the eighth floor is a memory of Earth before the collapse: Carl and Donut wake in remembered Havana, with Imani's and Elle's teams in the western United States and Katia's in Iceland. Donut takes the Master Telephone Psychic class. The floor is a card game: each squad must fill six empty slots by flagging monsters and people as collectible totems. Mordecai, a cyclops this floor, and Samantha rejoin them in the safe room. The pair map the half-real city, win their first card, and meet a local squad, Paz Lo, Anton Lopez, and the improbably serene nun Sister Ines, teaming up after a rocky start to catch their first squad members, starting with a monk seal named Geraldo, as a quest called the Chowder War brews between the seals and the crabs.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

The floor's systems come into focus: card mechanics, a practice arena, and a warning from Samantha, who has managed to get herself swallowed again, this time by a many-named spider demigod called the Bedlam Bride. In a corrupted town the joint squads pick up a mandatory quest among the trapped dead, and the smallpox lord Asojano asks Paz to repair his shrine. The errand becomes an auction: rival deities crowd in demanding their own shrines be chosen, while Katia messages that Carl must repair the shrine of Yemaya if she and Donut are to survive the Crown of the Sepsis Whore. Between fights, Carl and Donut appear on the Shadow Boxer program, where the host Rosetta, one of the Cookbook's past authors, tries to talk to Carl in code before being cut off, and an interview drags Carl's childhood, his mother's suicide and his father's abandonment, in front of the universe, with Donut hearing it for the first time. At the shrine, Carl threads the needle: Bomo repairs Yemaya's shrine while Carl flags the dying Asojano into a card as the town is liberated.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The god Ogun exacts his price for the shrine snub: he curses Paz beyond healing and kills Anton outright. Dying, Paz warns Carl that Sister Ines is not what she seems: her race radiates an escalating compulsion to protect her, and before the crawl she was a murderer. Ines turns Paz into a card rather than let him die, and leaves. The goddesses Yemaya and Eileithyia arrive with boons, and Eileithyia offers Carl a covert bargain: accept the adjutant she steers him toward for Faction Wars and she will deliver the votes to strip the ninth floor's protections and untangle the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, telling him to keep the deal from everyone. In Club Vanquisher, Carl is escorted by Pater Coal, who is the dungeon's rogue AI wearing a body; the encounter is oddly tender and ends with a boon from Emberus. Katia then lays out her escape route: a sealed divine prize that can lift her past the ninth floor, its last seal requiring an assassination for the Guild of Suffering. The target is Astrid, assistant manager of the Desperado Club. Planning begins, while Mordecai quietly takes the most vulnerable changeling children on as personal attendants and the first Faction Wars meeting introduces the rival teams, interrupted by Juice Box killing a delegate to force the NPCs' cause onto the agenda.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Carl descends into the Desperado Club's hidden layers, visiting the Guild of Suffering through the strip club known as the Penis Parade, and trades intelligence with the Night Wyrm. The Chowder War escalates as the crabs ambush the seals, and the party flags Raul, a land crab warrior. The rescue of Samantha finally happens: deep in the spider's territory, Carl meets Shi Maria, the Bedlam Bride herself, sees through her gentle act, and cuts a deal, she will allow herself to be carded, and in exchange the party will carry her to the next floor. The floor's next phases are announced: squads must win keys to their home stairwells, and keyless squads will be dumped onto keyed squads' exits to fight for them. Katia is found drugged unconscious in the club, her coping mechanisms laid bare, and Imani and Mordecai begin treating her addiction while Carl insists the Astrid job proceed before phase two. Between sessions in the practice arena, Donut's deck grows, quarrelsome totems and all.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

The assassination goes sideways in every direction but the one that matters. Samantha's distraction overshoots, luring a feral demon into the casino; Astrid, mid-evacuation, reveals she has children and that her husband is the Night Wyrm before Carl and Katia kill her, completing the guild quest and breaking the third seal on Katia's prize. The fallout is human: the club dancers Damascus Steel and Anaconda are Astrid's children, former crawlers' offspring she had protected, and Carl buys their safety by hiring the whole Penis Parade as mercenaries while the pair leave to seek revenge on their father. On Odette's show, the pieces of Faction Wars politics click into place: Empress D'Nadia has been quietly maneuvering against the Princess Posse, Odette declines the adjutant role Carl expected her to want, sponsoring the goddess Nekhebit instead, and Carl selects Baroness Victory as the team's adjutant. Odette also opens the books on herself: her guilt over Mordecai, the revelation that the crawl's host planets are fuel-harvesting operations, and her ambition to shut the whole system down in a controlled way. Phase two begins with Donut teleported ahead to choose the next battleground: Miami.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

Phase two is a gauntlet of nine enemy deck-holders guarding tokens, and Carl and Donut grind through them with their evolving deck, including a fused totem born from two of their cards. A near-fatal double battle in a turkey barn leaves Carl unconscious and Donut in command. Both of them understand what the floor has been building toward: the final key-holder is built from Carl's own memories. In a spliced-in scene the system forces him to watch, then walk through, his father's last days: the trailer, the new wife, the half-brother Asher he never knew existed, and a lethal dose of morphine. Carl takes what closure there is, burns the trailer, and goes to the boss fight, where the Reminiscence Hydra of Malicious Compliance summons totems built from his own worst possibilities. Shi Maria's power swings the battle, but mid-fight Carl looks into her magic eye, and something passes into him that he cannot yet name. In the aftermath, Donut confesses what she knew of Bea's spying on Carl's life, and the party's totem roster grows stranger.

Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)

Between phases, the wider war sharpens. Orren appears on the recap broadcast to explain Primal Engines and macro AIs, admitting the dungeon's AI has gone rogue but claiming a negotiated settlement; every Faction Wars team tries to abdicate its seat and the AI refuses them all. A seized benefactor box from the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network, whose people, including Rosetta, have all disappeared, leads Carl to a homeless shelter inside the memory, where a man called Goff delivers a message rehearsed daily for decades: he is a Residual, one of the deathless remnants present on every Primal Engine world, whose purpose is to teach the system AI to speak with its ancestors. Orren yanks Carl out mid-revelation, explaining the whole scene was a trap designed to force Borant into an unwinnable choice, one he had already pre-negotiated with the AI, and confirms that Agatha, the old woman from the first floor, is herself a Residual of another kind. Phase three then opens with the squads recombined in Cuba: only Carl's and Sister Ines's squads hold keys, and Imani, her entire squad dead in phase two, is trapped in a safe room with Quan Ch waiting outside.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Cuba comes apart. The Chowder War ends in mutual slaughter, and the mass death triggers a Demon Eviction: demons pour up from Sheol into the zombie dead. Sister Ines, riding a giant snake at the head of a charmed undead army, is revealed as the floor's other key-holder, and Samantha's attempt to teleport her to Carl drags the entire battlefield along, cracking the city open into a multi-sided boss brawl. Quan Ch forces Donut and Ines to burn escape cards, costing both squads their keys, and moves to take an exit for himself. Carl's counter-trap works: Samantha delivers teleport traps, Donut's totems arrive by wire, and Quan Ch, the crawl's top-leveled monster of a man, is finally killed, with Donut credited and holding both recovered keys. But the victory sours immediately: the stairwell exits themselves are failing, one collapsing minutes after the fight, and Ren, whose squad Carl had just saved, gives her items and her pet to Carl and stays behind to die. The floor-wide reports say the same thing everywhere: the exits are breaking, and the Demon Eviction is global.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

Survival becomes an engineering problem. The demon prince Amayon, crammed into the snake's body and fighting Ines's control, wants only to cast the spell that takes him and his evicted kin home, and Carl realizes that spell can be repurposed: if crawlers tunnel beneath the sealed stairwell chambers, a worldwide teleport cast at full power will rip the chambers open and pull them up into the exits. He and Prepotente broadcast the plan to every surviving crawler. The allies converge on Imani's church, where Katia's, Elle's, and Li Na's squads have gathered thanks to personal-space doors shared by Lucia Mar, whose splintering mind swung helpful before turning murderous again as she went down the stairs. Freeing Amayon costs dearly: at the FOCSA tower Louis kills Sister Ines, enraging her patron goddess Ysalte, who enters the realm hunting him; Carl's automaton springs the demon from the snake's corpse; and a quest gives the crawlers ten minutes to break Ysalte's hold on Amayon before she returns, with not enough souls left in the realm to fuel his casting.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

The finale spends everything. Raul the crab totem fertilizes an ocean of crab eggs to replenish the realm's souls; Carl rides inside Samantha into Amayon's grip, bleeding himself to five percent health so his Martyr's Path benefit floods the ground with Sheol fire, empowering the demon; and Ysalte is destroyed by the totem of the dead crawler Paz. Amayon, freed, owes answers: he names his price for revealing who killed Emberus's son. Then the Bedlam Bride collects hers: when Donut tries a card fusion to rid Shi Maria of her withered hand, the spider demigod kills the sacrificial totem and merges with the real Carl instead, walking his body through his own arsenal, half-blinding Li Jun, and tattooing the Eye of the Bedlam Bride across Carl's chest, a living bond that forces the party to carry her forward and cannot be torn up. As Amayon's global teleport counts down, Carl and Donut push their team's remaining Faction Wars votes to the viewing public, which approves a tenth team of NPCs and votes to strip safety protections from faction sponsors. The blast rips the stairwell chambers open, the crawlers are pulled through, and the party lands on the ninth floor as Faction Wars begins.

How does it end? (ending)

The book ends with the eighth floor collapsing and the crawlers riding a demon's spell out of it. With the exits failing worldwide, Carl and Prepotente spread a desperate plan: tunnel under the sealed stairwell chambers and let Amayon's world-spanning teleport, cast by the freed demon prince at full power, tear the chambers open and pull the crawlers up into them. Making it work costs almost everything: Ren sacrifices herself when her exit fails, Sister Ines is killed by Louis after the goddess Ysalte seizes her leverage, Carl bleeds himself nearly to death inside Samantha to fuel the demon, and Ysalte falls to a totem of the dead crawler Paz. In the battle's last moments Shi Maria, the Bedlam Bride, destroys her intended card-fusion target and merges with the real Carl instead, seizing his body long enough to maim Li Jun and tattoo the Eye of the Bedlam Bride onto Carl's chest, binding herself to him so she must be carried to the next floor. Before the stairwells fire, Carl and Donut push their remaining Faction Wars votes to the viewing public, which approves stripping safety protections from faction sponsors and seating a tenth team of NPCs. The party is pulled to the ninth floor as Faction Wars begins. In the epilogue, Agatha is confirmed to be maneuvering the rogue AI toward her own faction's ends while the Apothecary's gifts hide an installed upgrade in Carl; the Syndicate, rejecting the failsafe, sends the surface mercenaries into the dungeon to kill the remaining crawlers; and a garbage ship slips into orbit carrying Rosetta, Tipid, and fifty thousand former crawlers coming to fight.
