The Faceless Ones characters
By Derek Landy
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Valkyrie Cain (Protagonist)
Also known as Stephanie Edgley
Appears from the start
Skulduggery's partner, now experienced enough that the Sanctuary sends the pair of them out on real cases and resents them for solving them. Her Elemental magic is solid, her tolerance for injury is higher than it should be, and she is bored by the ordinary life her mirror duplicate lives on her behalf. She is also, since the last case, the last known descendant of the Ancients, a fact that makes her valuable to exactly the people she least wants to interest.
Skulduggery Pleasant (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
The skeleton detective, an Elemental who came back from his own murder during the war and has been hunting the people responsible for it ever since. He is charming, insufferable, and steadily less patient with a Sanctuary that would rather manage a problem than solve it. Whatever he was during the war, he keeps it to himself.
Tanith Low (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The English sword-fighter who can walk on walls, recovered from her injuries and back at Valkyrie's side. She is direct, fearless and the person Valkyrie goes to when she does not want to be lectured.
Ghastly Bespoke (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
The scarred tailor and fighter who makes the protective clothing Valkyrie and Skulduggery survive in, and who can turn his skin to stone. He would rather be left alone with his work, and he never is.
Eachan Meritorious (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
The Grand Mage of the Irish Sanctuary and one of the three Elders who govern magic in Ireland. Elderly, dignified and tired, he led the war against Mevolent and has spent the peace since trying to keep the surviving fanatics quiet.
Sagacious Tome (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
One of the three Elders of the Irish Sanctuary, nervous and irritable, who argues for caution in every meeting and has never had much patience for Skulduggery's methods.
Morwenna Crow (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
The third Elder of the Irish Sanctuary, cool and formal, and the member of the Council least inclined to let Skulduggery do things his own way.
Fletcher Renn (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 18
An English teenager with impossible hair and a very high opinion of himself, who turns out to be a Teleporter: he can step from one place to any other he can picture. He has had no training and no idea that the magical world exists, and he becomes extremely important to people who need a door opened.
Jaron Gallow (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 11
A one-armed sorcerer and the public face of the Diablerie, a group devoted to the return of the Faceless Ones. He is precise, formal and comfortable with murder, and he takes his orders from someone he will not name.
Murder Rose (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 11
A member of the Diablerie who kills with knives and treats each killing as an occasion. She is quick, theatrical, and entirely without hesitation.
Gruesome Krav (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 11
The Diablerie's strongman, huge and slow-spoken, who fights with his hands and does not need weapons to be a serious problem.
Billy-Ray Sanguine (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 11
The Texan killer with hollows where his eyes should be, who cuts a seam in stone with a straight razor and travels through solid ground. He is working with the Diablerie for his own reasons and remains, as always, for hire.
Batu (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 11
A name the Diablerie's people use for whoever is directing them, spoken with the deference usually reserved for a prophet. Nobody outside the group has seen this person or knows what they are, and the Sanctuary is not certain they exist at all.
China Sorrows (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 18
The keeper of Dublin's great private library, magically impossible to dislike, and willing to sell information to any side. With the Faceless Ones back in fashion among certain people, her past becomes a subject she would prefer not to discuss.
Mr Bliss (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 18
China Sorrows's brother, a vast, bald, quiet man of extraordinary strength who answers to no faction and does what he judges necessary. He has spent his life working against the return of the Faceless Ones.
Kenspeckle Grouse (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 12
The irritable old scientist who runs a hidden medical facility behind a derelict cinema and repairs the damage Skulduggery's cases do to everyone around him, Valkyrie in particular. He argues with all of them and treats all of them anyway.
