The Fall of Five characters
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
John Smith (Protagonist)
Also known as Number Four
Appears from the start
The fourth of the nine, and by default the leader of the group living in Nine's Chicago penthouse. He has Sam back, Sarah back, and for the first time a household of Garde to train with, and he is trying to turn a set of survivors into something that can fight a war. His Legacies keep expanding and he is more confident with them than he has ever been. His weakness is unchanged: he decides who is worth risking everything for and then will not reconsider.
Marina (Protagonist)
Also known as Number Seven
First appears in chapter 2
The seventh of the nine and the book's second narrator. She has come a long way from the convent orphanage where she was left untrained, but she is still the group's healer rather than its fighter, and she feels the difference. Her Legacies are healing, breathing underwater, and seeing in the dark. She has grown close to Number Eight, and she is the one who notices what the others are too busy to notice, including how much strain Ella is under.
Number Six (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The sixth of the nine, still the most effective soldier among them, able to turn invisible and to pull storms out of the sky. She has less patience than anyone for waiting in a penthouse, and she pushes for reconnaissance, offensives, and finding whatever the Loric left behind on Earth before the Mogadorians do.
Number Nine (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The ninth of the nine, whose Chicago penthouse and training hall have become the group's base. Strong, fast, able to move along walls and ceilings, and openly spoiling for a fight, he treats every plan that does not involve attacking the Mogadorians as time wasted. He and John lead by pulling in opposite directions.
Number Eight (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The eighth of the nine, who spent years alone in an Indian mountain before the others found him. He can teleport himself and others and change his shape, which makes him the group's fastest way to move and its best scout. He is easy-going in a way none of the rest of them manage, and he and Marina have become close.
Ella (Supporting)
Also known as Number Ten
First appears in chapter 3
The tenth Garde, the youngest of the group, orphaned twice over since her Cepan Crayton was killed. Her Legacies work on minds rather than on matter: she can reach other people's thoughts and can enter dreams. That last ability has stopped being an asset. Something is using her sleep to speak to her, and the visions it brings are getting harder to keep to herself.
Number Five (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 24
The fifth of the nine, found alive after the others had stopped expecting it. He was raised in isolation by his Cepan, far from anyone, and it shows: he is socially awkward, physically unlike the others, and unused to being one of a group. His Legacies are flight and the ability to take on the properties of anything he touches, turning himself to stone, metal, or glass. He struggles to fit into a household that has spent years learning to trust each other without him.
Sam Goode (Supporting)
Appears from the start
John's human friend from Paradise, recovered from Mogadorian captivity and living with the Garde. He has no Legacies, trains anyway, and works with his father on the Loric material they are piecing together. Having his father back after years of assuming him dead is its own complication, because the man who came back is not the one who left.
Malcolm Goode (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Sam's father, recovered from the Mogadorians with much of his memory destroyed. Before he disappeared he was one of a small group of humans who met the Loric ships when they landed on Earth and helped hide the children who arrived on them. As fragments of that time come back to him, he becomes the group's only source on what the Loric arranged on Earth before the war reached it.
Sarah Hart (Supporting)
Appears from the start
John's girlfriend from Paradise, Ohio, now living with the Garde rather than waiting for news of them. She has no powers and is the group's most obvious point of vulnerability, which she knows and refuses to let determine what she does.
Bernie Kosar (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Chimaera who has guarded John since Lorien, usually a beagle, capable of taking any animal's shape and of communicating directly with the Garde.
Setrakus Ra (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
The Mogadorian leader, who destroyed Lorien and has directed the hunt for the survivors personally since arriving on Earth. The Garde have met him once and survived only by standing together. He has stopped treating them purely as targets to be killed, and has begun trying to reach one of them directly.
