The Fate of Ten characters

By Pittacus Lore

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

John Smith (Protagonist)

Also known as Number Four

Appears from the start

The fourth of the nine, caught in New York when the Mogadorian warships arrive. The war he spent five books preparing for has started without waiting for him to be ready, and he is fighting it in a city full of civilians with no army behind him. He carries the deaths of Henri, Eight, and everyone else who has been killed for standing near him, and he is increasingly willing to spend himself to end it.

Number Six (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The sixth of the nine, leading the party sent to Mexico to find the Loric sanctuary before the Mogadorians do. She can turn invisible and control weather, and she is the most experienced soldier the Garde have. With the invasion under way, her mission has stopped being reconnaissance and become the only strategy anyone has.

Marina (Protagonist)

Also known as Number Seven

Appears from the start

The seventh of the nine, in Mexico with Six and Adam. Her healing keeps the group alive and her Legacy of lethal cold makes her one of its most dangerous fighters, and she has not put down what happened in the Everglades. She is a harder, quieter person than the one who left the convent in Spain.

Adam (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The Mogadorian who broke with his own people, carrying the memories of Number One and an earth-shaking Legacy that came with them. He travels with Six and Marina, guiding them through Mogadorian country in Mexico. His usefulness to the Garde is exactly what makes him a traitor to everyone he was raised among, and the invasion removes any remaining ambiguity about which side he is on.

Ella (Supporting)

Also known as Number Ten

Appears from the start

The youngest Garde, still held aboard Setrakus Ra's ship. He has told her she is his granddaughter and offered her a place at the top of whatever he builds on Earth, and her refusal has not changed his plans. Her Legacies work on minds and dreams, which is the only way she can reach the others, and being kept close to him is costing her.

Sam Goode (Supporting)

Appears from the start

John's human friend, still fighting a Loric war without any Loric advantages, in a city being levelled around him. He handles the group's technology and improvises through equipment problems nobody else understands.

Sarah Hart (Supporting)

Appears from the start

John's girlfriend, in New York with his group when the invasion starts. She has no powers and stays in the fighting anyway, holding a rifle alongside Garde who can level buildings, and she is one of the few people whose judgement John still accepts without argument.

Number Nine (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The ninth of the nine, fighting in the American cities the Mogadorians have moved on. Strong, fast, and able to run along any surface, he is at his most useful in exactly the sort of urban fighting the invasion has produced, and least interested in any plan involving retreat.

Malcolm Goode (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Sam's father, whose recovered memories of the Loric arrival on Earth pointed the Garde toward the sanctuary in Mexico. He works the intelligence and research side of a war that has now reached everyone.

Setrakus Ra (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The Mogadorian leader, no longer hiding. His fleet is over the cities of Earth, his forces are on the ground in the open, and he is presenting the occupation to humanity as an arrangement rather than a conquest. He keeps Ella near him.

Number Five (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 6

The fifth of the nine, who killed Number Eight and fights for the Mogadorians. He can fly and take on the properties of anything he touches, and he knows how the Garde think, plan, and move.

Bernie Kosar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The Chimaera who has guarded John since Lorien, able to take any animal's shape, fighting alongside the Garde in the open now that there is nothing left to hide from.
