The Fifth Season recap

The Stillness is a continent whose civilizations are periodically ended by seismic catastrophe, and whose orogenes, people who can still or start earthquakes, are feared, owned and killed. Three stories run in parallel: Damaya, a girl handed to a Guardian and raised in the imperial Fulcrum; Syenite, a Fulcrum orogene sent on assignment with the powerful, insubordinate Alabaster and shown by him how much the empire hides; and Essun, a middle-aged woman in a small comm who comes home to find her small son murdered by her husband and her daughter taken, on the same day an orogene tears a rift across the continent and begins a Season expected to last centuries. Syenite's thread ends with a free comm destroyed by Guardians, her lover dead, and Syenite killing her own infant son rather than let him be enslaved. The three women are one: Damaya became Syenite, Syenite became Essun. Essun reaches the underground comm of Castrima and finds Alabaster there, dying and half turned to stone. He admits he broke the world on purpose, and asks whether she has ever heard of a thing called a moon.

The Stillness is a single continent shaken so regularly that every institution on it is organized around survival: comms stockpile against Fifth Seasons, the long ash winters that end eras, and stonelore tells everyone how to live through one. Orogenes can sense and control the movement of the earth. They are hated and commonly killed on discovery; the empire of Sanze controls the ones it catches through the Fulcrum, an institution in the capital of Yumenes, and through the Guardians, who collect orogene children and can shut their power off with a touch. The book opens with two endings. In Yumenes, a man of extraordinary power tears a rift across the width of the continent, destroying the capital and beginning a Season that will last centuries. In the small southern comm of Tirimo, a woman named Essun comes home to find her three-year-old son Uche beaten to death by her husband Jija, who has taken their daughter Nassun and gone. Essun is an orogene who has hidden it for years, and so were her children. When the shockwave from the north reaches Tirimo she instinctively turns it aside from the comm, and the town, which now suspects what she is, becomes dangerous to her. She buries her son and leaves through the gate, heading south after Jija and Nassun. Elsewhere in the Stillness, a girl named Damaya is locked in her parents' barn after her orogeny surfaces at school. A Guardian named Schaffa comes for her and takes her away.

Essun travels south on the Imperial Road as ash begins to fall from the north and comms shut their gates against strangers. She is joined by a small boy who calls himself Hoa: white-haired, white-eyed, afraid of nothing on the road, who says he can help her find her daughter and will not say where he came from. Schaffa takes Damaya north toward Yumenes. On the way he deliberately breaks her hand, then sets it and tends her, explaining that she has to learn she cannot hurt him and that he will hurt her whenever it is necessary. He also tells her what she is worth: an orogene is a tool that can save a comm or destroy one, and the Fulcrum exists to make the difference reliable. Damaya, discarded by her family, decides to become worth keeping. In Yumenes, Syenite is a four-ring orogene of the Fulcrum, proud of her rank and impatient for more. She is handed an assignment she resents: travel to the coastal city of Allia and clear its silted harbor, in the company of Alabaster, the Fulcrum's only ten-ringer, and conceive a child by him on the way, because the Fulcrum breeds its orogenes as deliberately as it trains them. Alabaster proves to be powerful beyond anything she has seen, openly contemptuous of the rules she has built her life on, and apparently unstable.

Damaya arrives at the Fulcrum and is enrolled as a grit, the lowest rank, in a compound where orogene children are drilled in control, punished hard for failure, and reminded constantly that every one of them was given up by their family. Rings are earned by examination and mark rank. The Guardians are always present. Syenite and Alabaster travel toward Allia. He is exhausting company, and he shows her things the Fulcrum never taught: that orogeny can be done with a precision she was told was impossible, and that the empire's remarkable seismic stability is paid for. At a node station along the road they find the maintainer, an orogene child mutilated and wired into a chair, kept alive to quell shakes automatically for the region around it. The station's attendant is missing and the maintainer is dead. Syenite understands that this is where the Fulcrum's failures go, and that any child of hers could end there. Essun goes on south with Hoa through thickening ashfall, past comms that have already closed and settlements already emptied. She avoids the trouble she can and keeps moving toward the roads her husband is most likely to have taken.

Syenite and Alabaster reach Allia, a coastal city that resents needing them, and clear the blocked harbor. In the seabed Syenite finds something that should not be there: a broken obelisk, one of the enormous crystals that drift unexplained above the continent, sunken and buried, with the body of a stone eater inside it. Alabaster reacts with real fear and will not fully explain why. Their standing with Allia's leadership deteriorates from there. At the Fulcrum, Damaya learns the institution's real curriculum: absolute control, absolute obedience to Guardians, and the understanding that an orogene's life is held on sufferance. She trains, makes a few careful friendships among the other grits, and works toward her first ring. On the road, Essun and Hoa continue south. Hoa steers her toward routes she would not have chosen, is never hungry, and comes to no harm from things that should harm a child. She keeps him anyway, because he claims to be able to follow her daughter's trail and she has nothing better to follow.

Allia ends. Under attack and out of options, Syenite reaches for the drowned obelisk, and what answers is beyond anything she can hold. The city is destroyed and its harbor becomes a smoking crater. She and Alabaster survive, and a stone eater who gives her name as Antimony, and who has attached herself to Alabaster, carries them both through solid rock to Meov: an island comm in the northern sea whose people live by raiding and whose orogenes have never been near a Guardian. At the Fulcrum, Damaya meets Binof, a girl of a Leadership family who has talked her way onto the grounds looking for something the city's oldest records say lies underneath them. The two of them find it: a vast buried chamber far older than Sanze, holding a socket the size and shape of an obelisk. They are caught, and the Fulcrum's reaction makes clear that the chamber is a secret worth keeping. Essun's road south brings her a second companion, Tonkee: filthy, sharp, commless, far too educated for a scavenger, and openly fascinated by obelisks and by Essun herself.

Syenite and Alabaster stay on Meov. Its people take them in without ceremony, and Innon, Meov's leader, turns out to be an orogene who was never caught, never trained and never taught to be ashamed. He becomes lover to both of them. Syenite bears a son, Corundum, and for the first time lives as a person rather than a resource: no rings, no Guardians, no assignments, no one measuring her. Alabaster is calmer than she has ever seen him, and he tells her more of what he knows about obelisks, about what Guardians actually are, and about how much of stonelore is a lie. Syenite also understands that they are fugitives, and that the Fulcrum does not simply write off property. Elsewhere, Damaya's competence at the Fulcrum hardens into ambition, and she begins to be trusted with real work. Essun, Hoa and Tonkee travel on through the ash toward the far south, arguing most of the way, and Essun stops pretending to herself that Hoa is a child.

Meov is found. A Guardian ship arrives, Schaffa among the boarders, and Guardians can switch an orogene off by touch. Innon dies in the fighting. Antimony carries Alabaster away through the rock. Cornered, and certain that Schaffa means to take her infant son to a node station, Syenite kills Corundum with her own hands, then reaches through a garnet obelisk and destroys Meov and everyone on it. She survives, walks away, and starts over under a new name. The three threads are one life. Damaya became Syenite; Syenite became Essun. The girl in the barn, the Fulcrum orogene and the schoolteacher in Tirimo are one woman at three ages, renamed each time she had to begin again. The man who broke the continent in the prologue is Alabaster, who did it deliberately. In the present, Essun, Hoa and Tonkee reach Castrima, a comm built inside a geode underground and led openly by an orogene named Ykka, where orogenes and ordinary people live in the same space. Alabaster is there, most of his body already turned to stone and the rest being consumed by Antimony. He tells Essun that the Seasons are the consequence of an ancient injury rather than a fact of nature, that they can be ended, and that he needs her to finish it. His last question to her is whether she has ever heard of a thing called a moon. Tonkee proves to be Binof, still chasing the answers she went looking for as a girl, and Jija and Nassun are still alive somewhere to the south.
