The Final Empire recap

Under the thousand-year rule of the immortal Lord Ruler, ash falls constantly, the skaa are owned as slaves by the nobility, and rebellion has never once succeeded. Kelsier, a half-skaa thief who survived the Lord Ruler's prison mine and came out of it a Mistborn, gathers a crew of Allomancers for an impossible job: overthrow the Final Empire. He recruits Vin, an abused street thief who does not know she is Mistborn too, and trains her while she infiltrates the nobility under a false name and falls in with Elend Venture, the bookish heir to a great house. The crew's secret skaa army is destroyed and the plan collapses, but Kelsier provokes Luthadel into revolt and lets the Lord Ruler kill him publicly, becoming a martyr. In the chaos Vin learns from the Lord Ruler's own journal that he is an impostor sustained by metal he wears, confronts him, and kills him. The empire's capital falls, Elend is made king, and the crew are left holding a city they never planned to govern.

The Final Empire has stood for a thousand years. Ash falls from the sky, mists rise every night, the skaa are property of the nobility, and the immortal Lord Ruler is worshipped as God by the priests of the Steel Ministry. Vin, a small, distrustful half-skaa thief, survives inside Camon's crew in Luthadel by using what she calls her Luck, an ability she cannot explain that makes people agreeable. Kelsier, a famous half-skaa crewleader, returns to the city after surviving the Pits of Hathsin, the prison mine that kills everyone sent to it, where his wife died and where he became a Mistborn, able to burn every Allomantic metal. He finds Vin, recognizes what she is doing, and takes her into his own crew. There he tells her the truth: she is Mistborn as well. He assembles his specialists, among them Dockson the organizer, Breeze the Soother, Ham the Thug, Clubs the Smoker, and young Spook, and reveals the job he wants them for. Hired by the rebellion leader Yeden, they intend to raise a secret skaa army, empty the Lord Ruler's legendary hoard of atium, and bring down the empire itself.

Vin begins training in Allomancy, learning to Push and Pull on metal to fly across the city, to burn pewter for strength and tin for sharpened senses, and to work the emotions of a room with brass and zinc. She struggles to accept that the crew treats her as one of their own rather than as something to be used. Kelsier assigns her a second role: posing as Valette Renoux, a young noblewoman newly arrived from the provinces, so she can move through the great houses and gather intelligence. The Terrisman steward Sazed is given charge of her education in manners, dress, and court politics, and privately reveals himself as a Keeper, a Feruchemist who stores the histories and religions the Lord Ruler erased. Kelsier's brother Marsh, who despises him, agrees to infiltrate the Steel Ministry as a spy, while a skaa army is quietly recruited and hidden in caves outside the city. Kelsier also begins a second campaign entirely his own: killing nobles at night so that the skaa will start to believe the empire can bleed.

Vin enters noble society and finds she is unexpectedly good at it. At a ball in Keep Venture she meets Elend Venture, heir to one of the most powerful houses, who spends parties in an alcove reading banned political philosophy and talks to her as if she were a person rather than a match. She keeps returning to the balls, telling herself it is for the crew's intelligence, and reports on house alliances and rivalries while the crew works to set the great houses against one another. At the same time Kelsier's night raids and public defiance are hardening into legend among the skaa, who are beginning to speak of the Survivor of Hathsin as something more than a thief. Dockson and Ham worry that Kelsier is enjoying the myth too much, and that he is keeping parts of the plan to himself. Vin, living two lives, finds both of them increasingly hard to put down.

The crew's work proceeds on several fronts. The hidden army drills in the caves under Yeden's nominal command, growing faster than anyone expected. Marsh sends word from inside the Steel Ministry, where he has been accepted as a prelan and is reading its records. Sazed and Vin study a stolen logbook written by the Lord Ruler himself in the days before he took the power at the Well of Ascension, an account that does not match anything the Ministry teaches: it speaks of a man travelling north to save the world from a threat called the Deepness, and of the Terris packman who guided him. Vin, meanwhile, is noticed at court by Shan Elariel, the noblewoman expected to marry Elend, and finds her position as Valette increasingly exposed. Out in the mists at night, Vin becomes convinced that something is following her, a shape in the fog that no one else will admit to seeing, and Kelsier dismisses it.

The crew's campaign against the great houses works better than anyone hoped. Assassinations, thefts, and forged evidence set the noble families against one another until Luthadel slides into open house war, with private armies fighting in the streets and whole houses fleeing the city, drawing the imperial garrison's attention away from the skaa. Kelsier's night killings continue, and the Survivor of Hathsin has become a figure the slums genuinely believe in, to the visible discomfort of a crew who know exactly how deliberately the legend was built. Elend, quarrelling with his father over how House Venture should respond, is increasingly exposed at court for his association with a provincial girl nobody can verify. The hidden army in the caves reports itself ready. Vin, still convinced something walks with her in the mists, is told by Kelsier to stop worrying about it and prepare for the part of the plan he has not yet fully explained.

The plan comes apart. The skaa army, impatient and badly led, moves against an imperial garrison without orders and is destroyed; most of the recruits are killed and Yeden dies with them. The crew is left with a fraction of the force the operation required and no way to rebuild it in time. Kelsier, blamed by his own people for building a myth instead of an army, refuses to abandon the job and begins improvising a different one, telling almost no one what it is. Vin's noble identity becomes untenable: Shan Elariel moves against her directly, Vin is forced to kill her, and Valette Renoux is finished as a cover. Elend, warned that association with her is dangerous, defends her anyway and is disowned for it by his father. Then word arrives from the Ministry that Marsh has been taken and killed, and the crew, already gutted, has lost its eyes inside the enemy.

Refusing to believe Marsh is dead, Vin breaks into the Ministry's own building to find him and is captured by Steel Inquisitors, who beat her nearly to death and use her to draw the crew out. The rescue costs them: Sazed spends his Feruchemical stores to reach her, and Kelsier faces an Inquisitor in single combat and kills it, the first time in a thousand years anyone has managed it. The victory is small against what they have lost. With the army gone, the treasury plan dead, and the crew hunted, Kelsier finally states his real intention, which does not depend on soldiers at all. Vin, recovering, works through the Lord Ruler's logbook with Sazed and begins to see that the history the Ministry preaches is a lie built on top of another man's journey, and that whatever the Lord Ruler actually did at the Well of Ascension, he was not the person the prophecies described.

Kelsier turns Luthadel out into the streets, breaking the city garrison and setting a full skaa uprising in motion, then walks into the square before the palace and lets the Lord Ruler strike him down in front of the crowd. His death is the point: the Survivor becomes a martyr, and the revolt that follows is far larger than anything his army could have achieved. Marsh, alive and transformed into a Steel Inquisitor after his capture, turns that position against his masters. Vin, having finished the logbook, understands the truth at last. The Lord Ruler is Rashek, the Terris packman who murdered the man the prophecies named and seized the power at the Well of Ascension for himself, and his immortality runs through the great metal bracers driven into his arms. She fights him in Kredik Shaw, tears the metal from his body, and he ages and dies where he stands. Luthadel belongs to the skaa. Elend Venture is made king of the city, the surviving crew members become his reluctant government, and Kelsier is already being spoken of as a god. The atium hoard is never found, and the ash keeps falling.

Kelsier provokes an open uprising in Luthadel, then confronts the Lord Ruler in the square before Kredik Shaw and is killed in front of the crowd. The death is deliberate: it turns him into the Survivor, a martyr whose legend pushes the skaa into a full revolt that the crew's shattered army could never have produced. Marsh, believed dead, is alive, having been made into a Steel Inquisitor, and uses that position to strike from within. Vin, having pieced together the Lord Ruler's own logbook with Sazed, understands that he is not the prophesied hero who saved the world but Rashek, the servant who murdered the true hero and took the power at the Well of Ascension for himself, and that his immortality is fed by great metal bracers driven through his arms. She fights him in the palace, tears the metal away, and he ages and dies. Luthadel falls to the rebellion. Elend Venture, the one nobleman who wanted a better arrangement, is made king of the city, with Vin beside him and the surviving crew members as his awkward, unqualified government. The atium hoard the crew came for is never found, the ash still falls, the mists still rise, and Kelsier is already being worshipped as a god by the people he freed.
