The Gate of the Feral Gods characters

By Matt Dinniman

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Carl (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Now openly at war with the game's operators, Carl enters the fifth floor's sealed battlegrounds determined to liberate his assigned quadrant on his own terms. His bomb-making, his growing list of divine entanglements, and his willingness to weaponize the show's own broadcast machinery make him as dangerous to the people running the crawl as to the monsters in it.

Princess Donut (Protagonist)

Also known as Donut

Appears from the start

Carl's talking Persian cat and party leader, opening the floor with the Glass Cannon class: enormous magical firepower in a fragile, well-groomed package. Her celebrity, her fan club, and her instinct for theater keep growing, and her charm and spells repeatedly carry the party's schemes past guards, gods, and television hosts alike.

Mordecai (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Donut's bound manager, appearing on this floor as a giant bird-person, to his considerable annoyance. His deep knowledge of the dungeon's history, gods, and machinery guides the party's plans, even as the floors keep reshaping his body.

Katia (Supporting)

Also known as Katia Grim

Appears from the start

The party's doppelganger, now a top-ten crawler and the team's second planner. On this floor she engineers several of the party's boldest operations, and a quiet confession about the family she never got to have deepens the bond between her and Carl even as she begins charting her own course.

Mongo (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Donut's full-grown pet dinosaur and mount, as devoted and destructive as ever. His enthusiasm for smashing things occasionally advances the plot all by itself.

Louis (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A good-natured crawler found half-lost in the desert quadrant with his friend Firas. A former firefighter with more heart than caution, he attaches himself to Carl's cause, and his loyalty, especially to the changeling Juice Box, gives the floor's strangest storyline its human anchor.

Firas (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Louis's level-headed friend and fellow crawler, rescued from the desert alongside him. Steadier than Louis and just as loyal, he becomes a dependable member of the group's operations on the fifth floor.

Juice Box (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A changeling NPC first met working in Hump Town, who attaches herself to Louis and the party. Through her, Carl learns of the changelings' plight: a compressed, sickened people hoping the entity they serve can save them. Her requests pull the party into the floor's deepest secrets, and her devotion to Louis is genuine.

Maggie My (Antagonist)

Also known as Maggie My

First appears in chapter 14

The player-killer from the first floor, revealed on this floor to be an Infiltrator capable of wearing another person's body: she has taken over Chris, the former Meadow Lark crawler, and is being sponsored by the Skull Empire's princes. Patient, vicious, and nearly impossible to root out without killing her host, she is the party's most personal enemy on the floor.

Samantha (Supporting)

Also known as Psamathe

First appears in chapter 24

Half the soul of the sand goddess Psamathe, trapped in the head of a novelty doll after a bid to escape the Nothing went wrong. Foul-tempered, bloodthirsty, and strangely endearing, she is taken in by the party as a trainer and becomes one of the crawl's most improbable companions. She wants a real body, and she is willing to wait.
