The Gods of Mars

By Edgar Rice Burroughs

For ten years John Carter has stood on a bluff above the Hudson at night, willing Mars to draw him back to Dejah Thoris, and in March 1886 it finally does. He wakes not in Helium but in a strange, carefully tended forest beside a broad river and an inland sea, and soon learns where he is: the Valley Dor, at the end of the River Iss, where Martians make a last, voluntary pilgrimage at the end of their lives in the belief that it is paradise. The valley is nothing of the kind. Monstrous plant men and great white apes fall on anyone who arrives there, and among the first people Carter sees cornered by them is his old friend Tars Tarkas of Thark, who came down the river hoping to find Carter at the end of it. The second Barsoom novel picks up John Carter's story after a decade on Earth.
