The Golden Enclaves characters
By Naomi Novik
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
El (Protagonist)
Also known as Galadriel Higgins, Galadriel
Appears from the start
Graduated at last and back in her mother's Welsh commune, El is grieving Orion, whom she was forced to leave behind in the Scholomance. She barely has time to mourn before crises erupting across the wider wizarding world start pulling her out into it. Older, sadder, and finally reckoning with the true scale of her own power, she sets out to learn the truth about the enclaves, the flood of monsters, and what really became of the boy she loves.
Orion Lake (Supporting)
Appears from the start
New York's monster-killing hero, who stayed behind at graduation to hold back the maw-mouth Patience so his classmates could escape, and was sealed inside the school. To El and everyone who knew him he is presumed lost. His strange, bottomless appetite for maleficaria, never fully explained during their school years, haunts El as she refuses to accept that he is simply gone.
Aadhya (Supporting)
Appears from the start
El's loyal friend and artificer, among the first to seek her out after graduation and to stand beside her as the wider world's troubles mount. Practical, warm, and unshakeably steady, she remains one of the few fixed points in El's upended life.
Liu (Supporting)
Appears from the start
El's friend and fellow graduate, the musician whose calm and whose family connections become important as El is drawn out into the world. Having turned firmly away from dark magic, she offers El both practical help and grounding perspective as they confront what graduation left unfinished.
Liesel (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
The brilliant, brusque German enclaver from El's class, now maneuvering through the dangerous politics of the adult wizarding world. Relentlessly practical and unsentimental, she becomes an essential ally as El tries to understand the crisis spreading among the enclaves, turning El's raw power into workable strategy.
Ophelia Lake (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 7
The powerful head of the New York enclave and Orion's mother. Poised, formidable, and hard to read, she receives El with a composure that El finds deeply unsettling. As El digs into what happened to Orion and into how the great enclaves are truly built, Ophelia comes into focus as a figure standing near the center of it all.
Gwen Higgins (Supporting)
Appears from the start
El's mother, the beloved healer of the Welsh commune, whose gentleness and lifelong refusal of dark magic remain El's moral compass. Her cryptic warning about Orion still hangs over El, and her care and insight steady her daughter as the hidden truth about the enclaves begins to surface.
