In 1974, thirteen-year-old Leni Allbright moves with her parents to an inherited cabin in remote Alaska. The community teaches the unprepared family to survive, but winter and isolation worsen her father Ernt's trauma, paranoia, and violence toward her mother Cora. As Leni grows up, she falls in love with Matthew Walker, son of the man Ernt regards as an enemy. After Matthew is gravely injured during Ernt's attempt to separate them, Cora kills Ernt to stop him attacking Leni. Helped by Large Marge, Cora and the pregnant Leni flee to Seattle. Leni raises Matthew's son and remains away until Cora dies years later, leaving a confession that clears Leni. Back in Alaska, Leni discovers Matthew alive after a long recovery. She introduces him to their son and reclaims Kaneq as home, supported by the community that survived Ernt's violence with her.

In 1974, thirteen-year-old Leni Allbright has grown accustomed to sudden moves prompted by her father Ernt's lost jobs and volatile moods. Ernt, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, learns that his dead friend Bo Harlan has left him a cabin and land near Kaneq, Alaska. He sees the inheritance as a chance to escape ordinary society. Leni and her mother, Cora, follow him north in a battered bus. They arrive with little money and almost none of the equipment needed for winter. Their cabin lacks running water and electricity, but neighbors including storekeeper Large Marge and Tom Walker turn out to help repair it and teach the family basic skills. Leni begins the tiny local school and befriends Tom's son, Matthew, her only classmate.

The endless summer light gives way to winter, magnifying Ernt's nightmares and jealousy. He spends time with Earl Harlan, whose warnings about government and outsiders deepen his paranoia. Ernt grows hostile toward Tom Walker's plans to improve Kaneq and starts training his family as though an attack were imminent. Inside the cabin, his anger turns increasingly against Cora. Leni understands that her mother is in danger, but Cora remains convinced that the loving man she married will return. The community quietly notices the violence and offers escape, yet Cora repeatedly goes back. Leni learns the hard disciplines of Alaskan survival while also learning to read the weather of her father's temper.

A family outing on the frozen river ends in disaster when Matthew's mother, Geneva, falls through the ice and dies. Matthew leaves Kaneq, separating him from Leni. Time passes, and Leni grows from a lonely child into a young woman shaped by the wilderness and the community. Ernt's resentment of Tom becomes more fixed, especially as Tom's money and civic projects attract support. He insists that the family withdraw farther from town and builds physical and emotional barriers around the homestead. Leni and Cora make secret preparations to flee if his violence becomes unbearable, but fear, love, and the practical dangers of the country keep delaying their departure.

Matthew returns as a teenager, and his friendship with Leni becomes a secret romance. With him, she can imagine education and a future not ruled by her father's instability. Ernt forbids contact with the Walkers, so every meeting carries danger. Cora wants Leni to claim a life beyond the cabin, but both know Ernt's reaction could be violent. As Tom and Ernt's dispute escalates, Ernt attacks Tom and is arrested. The temporary absence gives Cora and Leni an opportunity to leave, but Cora cannot finally sever herself from him. His return places the family under even tighter control and makes Leni and Matthew's relationship more perilous.

Ernt discovers that Leni and Matthew have continued seeing each other. In the confrontation that follows, the young couple try to escape across dangerous terrain. Matthew is gravely injured in a fall while attempting to protect Leni. Believing the disaster proves that every person close to her is harmed, Leni returns to the cabin. Ernt's violence then turns directly on her. Cora shoots and kills him to save their daughter. Certain that authorities will not understand years of abuse, the women seek Large Marge's help. She organizes the concealment of Ernt's body and provides a way out. Leni, now pregnant with Matthew's child, leaves Alaska with Cora and begins living under another name in Seattle.

In Seattle, Leni gives birth to a son she names Matthew Junior and becomes a photographer. She stays away from Alaska because she believes Matthew has been left permanently unreachable and fears prosecution for Ernt's death. Years later Cora develops cancer. Before dying, she writes a confession taking sole responsibility for killing Ernt and asks Leni to stop hiding. Leni returns to Kaneq with MJ, gives the letter to the police, and is reunited with the community that protected her. She learns that Matthew survived his injuries and has worked through a long recovery, though lasting effects remain. Leni introduces him to their son. The reunion cannot restore the lost years, but it opens the possibility of a shared future. With Cora's confession accepted and the old secret resolved, Leni chooses Alaska as home on her own terms.

When Ernt discovers Leni's relationship with Matthew, he attacks her. Cora shoots Ernt to save their daughter. Large Marge helps the women conceal his death, and Cora and the pregnant Leni flee Alaska under false identities. In Seattle, Leni gives birth to Matthew Junior while believing that Matthew will never recover from the injuries he suffered trying to protect her. Years later Cora dies of cancer after writing a confession that takes responsibility for Ernt's death. Leni returns to Kaneq with her son and turns the letter over to the police, ending the life of concealment. She learns that Matthew survived and has made a long, partial recovery. Their reunion is difficult but hopeful, and he meets the son he never knew he had. Cleared of the crime, Leni chooses Alaska and the community that once protected her as home, while accepting that healing will be gradual rather than complete.
