The Great Hunt characters
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Rand al'Thor (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A young man of the Two Rivers who, at the close of the previous book, channeled the One Power for the first time and was named by Moiraine as the Dragon Reborn, the reincarnation of the ancient champion prophesied to face the Dark One. Reluctant and frightened of the madness said to claim men who wield the Power, he wants only to be left alone as an ordinary shepherd and struggles to accept what he has become.
Mat Cauthon (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Rand's reckless, quick-tongued friend from Emond's Field, still bound to the tainted dagger he took from the cursed city of Shadar Logoth, which has left him sickly, suspicious, and slowly poisoned in body and mind. Ready with a joke and a wager even so, he badly needs the Aes Sedai's help to be freed of the blade's hold on him.
Perrin Aybara (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Rand's steady, broad-shouldered friend, once a blacksmith's apprentice, who has discovered an uncanny bond with wolves that he fears and tries to keep hidden. Thoughtful and slow to act, he wrestles with what the wolves are making of him and holds the secret close.
Egwene al'Vere (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The innkeeper's daughter of Emond's Field, revealed to be able to channel the One Power and now bound for the White Tower in Tar Valon to train as an Aes Sedai. Strong-willed and eager to master her new gift, she remains close to Rand even as their paths begin to diverge.
Nynaeve al'Meara (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The former Wisdom of Emond's Field, a fiercely proud young woman who has learned she can channel with unusual strength and goes to the White Tower for training despite her deep distrust of Aes Sedai. Stubborn and protective, she resents being made a novice after ruling as a village Wisdom.
Moiraine (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Aes Sedai who found the young people of Emond's Field and identified Rand as the Dragon Reborn. Calm, secretive, and single-minded in her purpose of guiding and guarding the Dragon, she keeps most of her knowledge to herself as she steers events toward the ends she believes prophecy requires.
Lan (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Moiraine's Warder, a grim and deadly swordsman and the uncrowned last king of a Borderland realm swallowed by the Blight. Bonded to protect Moiraine, he is a stern teacher and constant guardian to those in her charge.
Min (Minor)
Appears from the start
A blunt, sharp-eyed young woman who sees glimpses of the future as images around people. Having met Rand and his friends before, she knows some of what her visions foretell about them and is drawn back into their dangerous affairs.
Loial (Minor)
Appears from the start
The young Ogier who left his forest home out of curiosity and joined Rand's company. Gentle, enormous, and endlessly bookish, he is eager to see the world and to set these events down in writing, if forever alarmed by the dangers they bring.
Padan Fain (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The former peddler of the Two Rivers, revealed as a Darkfriend and something worse: a man warped by long service to the Shadow and by contact with the ancient evil of Shadar Logoth, now obsessively fixed on Rand. Cunning and malignant, he is far from the harmless trader he once seemed.
Elayne Trakand (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Daughter-Heir of Andor, heir to the throne in Caemlyn, a poised and quick-witted young noblewoman able to channel and bound for the White Tower to be trained. Confident and strong-willed, she met Rand briefly during his time in her mother's capital.
Verin Mathwin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A plump, mild, seemingly absent-minded Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah, the order devoted to knowledge and lost history, who attaches herself to the affairs of the young Two Rivers folk. More interested in old lore than in politics on the surface, she proves considerably shrewder than she appears.
Ba'alzamon (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The fiery-eyed figure who haunts Rand's dreams and claims to be the Dark One or his chief servant. Seemingly beaten at the Eye of the World, he is far from destroyed and continues to hunt and torment Rand across both the waking world and the world of dreams.
