The Guns of Navarone recap

A British force on Kheros must be evacuated before a German attack, but two enormous guns on the occupied island of Navarone control the naval approach. Mountaineer Keith Mallory leads Andrea Stavros, explosives expert Dusty Miller, engineer Casey Brown, and young climber Andy Stevens on a covert mission to destroy the battery. After reaching the island in a storm and scaling its supposedly impassable southern cliff, the team crosses hostile terrain while carrying an injured man, evading patrols, and working with Greek resistance guides. Capture, damaged equipment, and betrayal steadily narrow their options. The survivors enter the fortress in disguise, and Miller rigs the guns and their workings with delayed charges. They escape toward the sea while German forces close in. The emplacement explodes as British ships approach, opening the route to Kheros and allowing the evacuation to proceed, though several members of the mission do not survive.

In the autumn of 1943, a large British garrison is trapped on the island of Kheros and faces capture when German forces move to overwhelm it. Warships could evacuate the men, but the route passes Navarone, whose two huge, radar-directed guns dominate the channel. Earlier air attacks have failed against the guns' protected position. James Jensen gives Captain Keith Mallory only days to take a sabotage party onto the occupied island and destroy the battery from within. Mallory is an accomplished mountaineer with experience in Greece. His team consists of the powerful Greek fighter Andrea Stavros, American explosives expert Dusty Miller, engineer and radio operator Casey Brown, and young climber Andy Stevens. They sail in a decrepit fishing boat under cover, knowing that discovery at sea or delay on the island will doom both the mission and the men waiting on Kheros.

Mallory's disguised vessel survives a violent passage toward Navarone, but the approach leaves the party struggling against weather as well as enemy scrutiny. They aim for the island's southern face, a cliff so severe that the Germans regard it as a natural defense and do not expect an assault there. The landing goes wrong, equipment is lost or soaked, and the climb becomes a fight against darkness, rain, and exhaustion. Mallory gets the group upward, but Stevens falls and suffers disabling injuries. The team reaches the top with its schedule damaged and now has to move an incapacitated man across guarded country. Miller also discovers that water has compromised some of the carefully prepared explosives, threatening the central purpose of the raid before the guns are even in sight.

On the island, local guides Louki and Panayis help the raiders choose hidden routes toward Navarone town and the fortress. The injured Stevens slows them, while patrols and searches show that the occupation force knows intruders are present. When German troops corner the party, Mallory and Andrea rely on fluent language, false identities, and calculated violence to reverse the situation and escape. Each encounter uses time they do not have and increases the likelihood that the roads ahead will be sealed. The mission is also becoming divided between two urgent duties: caring for a badly injured companion and preserving the explosives and secrecy needed to save the garrison on Kheros. Mallory continues toward the resistance network near the town, where the group hopes to obtain shelter, information, and a way into the heavily defended gun complex.

The raiders make contact with resistance supporters, including Maria, but German security forces tighten their grip on the town. The team's movements have been anticipated too often to be chance, raising the fear that someone close to the operation is passing information to the enemy. Capture forces Mallory and Andrea to stage another deception, using the Germans' assumptions about prisoners and officers to regain the initiative. The party secures uniforms and a route that may let them approach the fortress as though they belong there. Losses and injuries reduce the number who can take part, while Miller works with explosives that are no longer fully dependable. The approaching naval deadline prevents withdrawal: even if the team cannot escape afterward, the guns must be disabled before the British ships enter the channel.

Evidence within the group exposes Panayis as the source of the enemy's advance knowledge. The betrayal explains the rapid German responses and has cost the raiders time and lives, but dealing with it does not remove the forces already hunting them. Mallory divides the remaining tasks between creating a diversion, reaching transport, and putting Miller inside the battery. Disguises and captured credentials carry them through layers of security that open fighting could never defeat. Miller reaches the gun workings and designs a delayed demolition intended not merely to scar the armored emplacement but to turn its own mechanisms and ammunition against it. Meanwhile, the others struggle to secure an escape route from the harbor before the whole fortress is alerted.

Miller finishes placing the charges inside the Navarone emplacement and sets them to detonate after the team has left, while Mallory, Andrea, and their surviving allies fight their way toward the harbor. The mission has taken the lives of Stevens and Brown, and the remaining party can do nothing but trust Miller's improvised demolition as German troops pursue them. They get away from the island by sea as the British naval force approaches the channel on its way to Kheros. The guns prepare to fire, but Miller's charges trigger inside the protected position and set off a destructive chain through the machinery and ammunition. The battery is wrecked before it can stop the ships. With the passage open, the threatened Kheros garrison can be evacuated. Mallory, Miller, Andrea, and the surviving Greek helpers leave Navarone having completed the assignment at severe cost.

Mallory's party penetrates the Navarone fortress while the deadline for the Kheros evacuation closes in. Miller places charges inside the gun emplacement and links the destruction to the machinery and ammunition that the Germans expect to use against the approaching British ships. The raiders escape to the harbor under pursuit, paying for the mission with members of their team and confronting the betrayal that has repeatedly exposed them. The delayed explosions tear through the emplacement just as the naval force enters the guns' range, destroying Navarone's ability to close the channel. The warships can continue to Kheros and remove its threatened garrison. Mallory, Miller, Andrea, and the surviving helpers leave the island exhausted, with the operation accomplished but its human cost unmistakable.
