The Hard Way

By Lee Child

The tenth entry in the Jack Reacher series opens with Reacher watching a stranger drive off in an oddly parked Mercedes outside a New York cafe. John Gregory, a security executive who was present when the car was recovered, tracks him down for a description of the driver and brings him to his employer, Edward Lane, a former Army colonel who now runs a private security firm staffed by veterans of elite military units. Lane reveals that the car carried a million dollars in ransom money: his wife Kate and her eight-year-old daughter Jade disappeared the previous morning along with their driver, and the kidnappers have missed the follow-up call they promised after collecting the cash. Lane asks Reacher, a former Army CID investigator, to find them without involving the police, drawing him into a kidnapping whose planners have already shown they can dictate and enforce their own terms.
