A writer and painter living alone in Providence who is strongly drawn to forbidden religion and occult history. From his rooms he becomes fascinated by a disused church on Federal Hill that local residents avoid.

Edwin M. Lillibridge (Minor)

Appears from the start

A Providence journalist who disappeared in 1893 while investigating the abandoned church and the secretive congregation that once occupied it. Blake finds evidence that Lillibridge entered the building before him.

Enoch Bowen (Minor)

Appears from the start

An archaeologist and occultist who returned from travels in Egypt with an unusual object. He later founded the Church of Starry Wisdom in Providence and made that object central to its secret observances.

Dr. Dexter (Minor)

Appears from the start

A physician who examines Blake after the writer's fatal encounter. His later actions show that he takes the danger associated with the abandoned church seriously.

The Haunter (Antagonist)

Also known as The Haunter of the Dark

Appears from the start

An intelligence associated with the Shining Trapezohedron and the former worship of the Starry Wisdom congregation. It can make contact through the stone and cannot tolerate light.
