The Hedge Wizard 2 recap

By Alex Maher

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

Hump, Bud and Celaine reach the lakeside town of Fishers Lake hunting for the wizard Vivienne, and find it plagued by swarms of soul-draining spirits, a hostile high priest, and people going missing. Vivienne agrees to train them in exchange for help, and the investigation uncovers a gateway into the remnant realm, a dead world, hidden beneath the lake in a sunken temple she has secretly hunted for years. The creature behind it, a soul-eating gorger, takes Hump captive and holds him a month. He escapes, restores a fellow captive's shattered soul, and rejoins his party as they trade a stolen artifact for the prisoners, a bargain that only makes the gorger stronger. In the flooded temple Vivienne deliberately corrupts her own soul to fight it, Lucile dies shielding Hump, and Hump chooses to unleash the dragon's power completely, destroys the creature inside his own soul-void, and then proves he can pull himself back from it. The party comes home battered; Vivienne faces a tribunal and recommits to teaching Hump. The book closes with what appears to be the dead Lucile sitting in Hump's room, unexplained.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hump, a penniless self-taught hedge wizard, buried his master Sethril Woodrow and inherited his staff, his medallion and a soul-bound spellbook, the Book of Infinite Pages, then rode for the newly opened dungeon at Bledsbury to make a living. On the road he fell in with Bud, an earnest young knight sworn to the Goddess of Winter, and joined a delving party with the secretive, formidably skilled Vamir and his companion Celaine, who carries her people's dragon's blood. Rescuing villagers taken by the dungeon's kobolds drew them into the orbit of Prince Kassius, an outwardly generous royal who turned out to be a warlock and necromancer preaching that the gods are merely ascended mortals hiding the path to power. In the dungeon's true core chamber Kassius unleashed a dying dragon bound there as its guardian. To save his friends, Hump bound and absorbed her power and burned Kassius down to a barely living husk, only for a masked shadow entity to tear open reality and carry the prince away. No remains were ever found, and officially he died a hero. Hump came out of it a second-rank wizard carrying the dragon's borrowed power, a far fiercer fire affinity, an unhealed injury to his soul that by his own society's definition makes him a warlock, and her egg, soul-bonded to him until death. Because that bond will drag him before deadly trials among Vamir's people, Bud and Celaine chose to stay with him while Vamir rode home alone to buy them time. Bud was revealed to be a nobleman, Lord Robert Blackthorne. Newly guild-registered, the three set out for Fishers Lake to find a wizard named Vivienne, an old friend of Hump's master, who might agree to train him.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Two weeks out of Bledsbury the trio are working paid quests on the road to Fishers Lake, clearing a pair of forest trolls for a poor farming village. Hump's essence now flows far too easily for him to steer, and his fire in particular is a liability in a fight. That night Celaine insists the three of them stop keeping secrets: she explains her people's goddess-sanctioned dragon's-blood transformation to Bud, who already knew, and Hump finally spells out his own soul-merger with the wolf dragon and what it makes him. Bud takes it without flinching. They agree to hide his condition from outsiders, Vivienne included, in case it costs them her training, their guild standing, or Hump's life, and to revisit that only if he starts slipping. In Sheercliff, a great city split between a cramped lower town and a noble plateau, they separate for a day. Hump buys a copper bracelet that steadies his casting, prank-doses a bullying young lord named Randall to spare a coerced apprentice, and discovers his spellbook is now copying powerful formations on its own, simply from his sustained attention. The guild has no address for Vivienne, only that she went quiet about six months ago, around the time Fishers Lake began reporting ghosts and missing women; the party takes that quest. Bud calls on Countess Daston, who warns that rumors about Kassius's death are circulating uncomfortably close to the truth and that monster activity is climbing kingdom-wide. Hump secretly wakes Kassius's dagger and nearly dies to it. Identified as Bloodshadow, a stealth artifact with a hungry will of its own, it goes to Celaine to master. They ride for Fishers Lake at dawn.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Fishers Lake is a town on edge: months of ghost sightings, three people now missing, and a high priest, Albry, who blames the witch at the lighthouse. That witch is Vivienne, sealed behind wards the town cannot break. On the party's first night an unprecedented swarm of dark spirits pours over the lake. Albry leads his clergy out to pray at them and they are cut down and drained; the party fights uphill to shield them until Vivienne appears in a burst of golden light and routs the swarm single-handed. Her first question is about Sethril; told he died two months ago, her face closes. Inside the lighthouse Hump brews Soulbrew for the wounded and notices that her apprentice Dylan heals with a god's blessing rather than a practitioner's craft, though Dylan will not explain why a Chosen studies under a wizard. A priestess, Elowen, defies Albry publicly to accept Vivienne's help. Alone with Hump, Vivienne accuses him of murdering his master for the spellbook, leans magical pressure on him until he nearly breaks, then apologizes: she had to be certain. He shows her the dragon egg, but not his soul. Days later Albry is pulled half-drowned from the lake claiming Hestia appeared to him in person and chose him, with orders to kill Vivienne. Nothing in his aura reads as cursed, but he seizes mid-argument, one eye blue and one silver, and demands to know what is in Hump's bag. Vivienne agrees to train all three in exchange for help with the lake, and tests them: Hump's raw power is exceptional for his age, his control and theory poor. The guild's records list her surname as Loresse; she introduces herself as Sharone.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Training splits three ways: soul strength, blessing versatility, technique. Vivienne beats Bud and Celaine together in about two minutes using only a wand and tier-two spells, then names their faults. Bud's blessings are formally read as Frostfire Knight and Heart of Frostfire. Celaine's brilliance shows something Vivienne has never seen: a third circle already forming on its own, because Owalyn's Chosen earn their next blessing by hunting rather than receiving it. Hump is set on an earth track toward a fire-and-earth specialization, and Dylan, who beats him soundly with druidic shapeshifting and vines, starts teaching him to fight with his staff. Then Vivienne opens up about Sethril. They were classmates. The spellbook grew with him, and the night he reached the fourth rank and manifested his soul, something happened: he was attacked, he killed the rank-six wizard who did it, he took soul damage he spent years quietly repairing, and he left the academy that night and never came back or explained. He hid the damage for fear of being branded a warlock. Hump, who has been telling himself goblins killed his master, starts pulling at the thread, and his training turns from fear to anger. At the temple the party finds Albry hosting a noble adventuring party summoned to deal with the town's witch problem, led by the young lord Randall, the same man Hump dosed in Sheercliff, publicly humiliated for it, and now demanding satisfaction. A duel is set for the following week. Albry admits his own soul was damaged in the spirit attack and that he can no longer withdraw his brilliance to prove any blessing at all. And when Hump at last manages a true bond with the dragon egg, Vivienne's face darkens: she has felt something else that changed in his soul that day, and she wants to know what.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

Hump tells her. Vivienne hears the whole Bledsbury story, says his soul carries a scar from colliding with the dragon's, notes that warlocks are normally handed to the church, and agrees to keep teaching him anyway, so long as the change does no harm and he shows no malice. Then word comes that Lakewood has been attacked. The party finds the hamlet silent: seventeen dead of thirty-two, torn apart, the blood on a dead hunter's spear not human. They track the killers to a cave, smoke them out, and fight large, hairless, spine-maned beasts that heal instantly by devouring their own wounded. Mid-fight Celaine's third circle completes with no god's pillar to grant it, which badly unsettles Bud, whose faith holds that such power is given rather than found, and she comes out of it with a new blessing, Predator's Intent. Inside the cave they find guild medallions belonging to the party of five adventurers who vanished weeks earlier, a blood-drawn summoning formation ringing a cluster of violet crystals, and an essence Hump has never felt: ordinary blue shot through with something purple. Nine of Lakewood survive, among them a small girl found hiding in a cellar. Hump quietly keeps one crystal back rather than hand it to Vivienne. They return to find the politics have turned: Randall's party has found something out on one of the lake's islands, guided by a vision Albry claims came from Hestia, and Albry has retaken the temple and jailed Elowen for heresy. Catching a spy watching Vivienne's lighthouse, they run him down and unmask Skander, Randall's rogue.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

Skander gives up little and is released. At the temple Vivienne demands Albry prove his Chosen status; he refuses, and his essence surges past anything a first-circle Chosen should hold. Randall attacks her, and the standoff ends only when Skander drops from the rafters and knocks the priest out cold, but not before Albry rises with black, star-flecked eyes and Hump sees in them exactly the essence from the Lakewood cave. Madeleine breaks ranks to free Elowen. The artifact Albry has been displaying, Hestia's Star, proves to be a storage stone so efficient it registers no signature at all. Convinced Vivienne is lying about the crystals, Hump channels his hidden one and is nearly consumed by it. Then the temple's buried library gives them the shape of the thing: not a summoning but a gateway, an uncontrolled hole between realms that anything at all can pour through. Elowen names the far side the remnant realm, a dead world, and names its natives: shades, whose kiss drains life, and the flesh prowlers that butchered Lakewood. Cornered, Vivienne finally tells Hump the truth. Fishers Lake is the grave of an ancient temple that the goddess Hestia sank during the War of the Firmament. She has spent four years hunting it, because she believes it holds a way past the seventh rank, a ceiling no living wizard has broken and one she suspects the gods imposed deliberately. She has been baiting spirits toward her own lighthouse on purpose. She asks Hump to keep all this from Bud, and he agrees. Hump casts Fire Ray and is confirmed a rank-two wizard, and Randall's party agrees to help trap and track a shade.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

The test goes wrong. Hump binds a harmless summoned spirit cleanly, but the instant it is released a rift tears open and something huge and tendrilled drags it through and tries to follow; Vivienne blasts the creature back and the rift collapses. Then the horizon darkens. The monthly attack has come early and hundreds of shades are rising. Vivienne pulls rank as a fifth-rank wizard, organizes the defense, and lights her beacon to draw the swarm onto herself alone. A second gateway erupts inside the town. The party fights through fourteen flesh prowlers to the ruined guardhouse and finds twenty townspeople piled unconscious but alive, Captain Winfrey Pesh dead on the bars of a broken cell, and Albry kneeling at the gateway's heart with his soul being drawn out of his chest to hold it open. He is not the one behind this. He is the fuel. Hump breaks the formation from outside with earth magic, and a twelve-foot thing of pale clay and stone forces itself halfway through the gap, jams the gateway open with its own body, and puts a spike through Skander's stomach. Twenty more prowlers pour out. The party runs, taking who they can, and Bud has to accept they cannot take everyone. The prowlers do not eat the fallen townsfolk; they drag them back toward the rift. Then the creature turns its attention on Hump, breaks his defenses with a single assault on his soul, and he goes down with a bite to the leg as his last sensation. He is carried through the gateway.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

The party fears Hump dead until Celaine tries to bond with his dragon egg herself and it refuses her: an active bond blocks any other, so he is alive. He wakes stripped of everything, injured, sealed in a stone box with no door, buried alive. His captor introduces itself as a gorger, once a nature spirit of the remnant realm, remade when that realm died, kept alive only by devouring souls. Shades, it says, were nature spirits too, twisted by the same catastrophe. It wants back what the wizard took from it. When Hump blasts its heartstone the body simply reforms around it. To demonstrate, it produces another captive whose soul has been eaten out entirely, leaving a babbling husk. Then it starts working on Hump's soul, and is genuinely startled to find he can resist; something warm rises in him each time and holds. A soul-drained woman brings him essence chips. Recalling the roster of the five adventurers who vanished, he calls her Lucile, and she flickers. He begins burying the spare chips in the dirt of his cell. The gorger lets slip that it means to use human bodies as clay to build itself a better form, and that the veil between worlds is failing on its own, so it needs no help. Above, reinforcements reach Fishers Lake from Sheercliff under Lady Helen Astida, who takes command, calls the captives lost, and refuses any rescue; Fredricks takes over the guard in Winfrey's place. Vivienne submits to her without protest, then privately reveals it was a maneuver to free her own hands. Bud tells her plainly that if she is not fully committed to getting Hump and the townsfolk back, he will expose her temple to the church. In the remnant realm the gorger arrives eager: the time of the feast is nearly here.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Hump breaks out. Drawing on thirteen hoarded chips at once he masters white flame for the first time and melts his chain, then takes hold of Lucile and forces his way into her shattered soul, first with warmth and shared memory, then with the worst things he has witnessed, to show her that pain can be survived. She comes back screaming, lucid, and remembering nothing. Searching the tunnels together they find Priest Albry in a side cell, emaciated and drained, fingernails broken from trying to dig his way out, dead of thirst. They find the gorger's treasury, looted from victims over centuries, and Hump's own staff and spellbook, which repairs itself at his touch and unlocks a new power: tier-one formations cast straight from the page. A staff lights in Lucile's hand. She is a caster, and was the Chosen leader of the party that vanished. Outside lies a red, dead country under a grey sky, dozens of tears hanging in the air, and at the valley's heart a ruined marble temple with the gorger's army massed before a great gateway. Lucile remembers the townsfolk are held in a cellar beneath those ruins. Meanwhile Bud steals Hestia's Star from Vivienne's lab, meaning to trade it for the captives; Skander catches the group slipping away and covers for them. Vivienne, who knew all along, agrees the star is what the creature wants, warns it could buy the thing a permanent gateway, and proposes rigging it as a bomb instead. They track a marked shade down through the lake in a bubble of air and find her sunken temple at last, its door carved with three eyes. The seal shuts behind them. Ahead is the gateway, and the gorger agrees to talk.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

The gorger parades its prisoners, Hump and Lucile hidden among them, and swears Hump is held elsewhere. Vivienne holds out for every captive and gets it, in two stages: half cross first, then a courier carries the star back. Hump volunteers, reunites with his party for a moment on the far side, learns the star has been rigged to detonate the instant foreign essence touches it, and carries it through himself. The gorger absorbs it whole and the trap goes off. It does not die. It tears apart ten of its own flesh prowlers and builds a new, far larger body around Hestia's Star as its core. Hump hurls the old heartstone through the closing gap, dives after it, and seals the gateway for good with earth magic, but the reborn gorger forces through first, with prowlers and shades behind it. Now it is loose in the flooded temple with the party and twenty rescued townsfolk, healing every wound by eating its own, and it turns its creatures on the civilians to split the party's attention. Vivienne burns half the shades away with a burst of light, duels the creature through illusions, water and stone, and is opened across the stomach. So she inhales something violet from a glass vial and forces her soul into a manifestation no wizard is supposed to achieve, and then, deliberately, corrupts it. The smile she turns on the creature reminds Hump of Kassius.

Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)

Fueled by that corruption, Vivienne drags every drop of standing water in the chamber into four cyclones and drowns the gorger beneath them. It survives. She is left aged and close to death, a fifth-rank wizard spending power far past her rank, and Hump finds himself thinking of Kassius again. Beneath its ruined armor the creature's true form finally shows: a shade glowing bronze and gold rather than black, with Hestia's Star beating in its chest as its heartstone. The party goes for the star. Celaine drives a silver arrow through a gap in its armor and stabs the stone with Bloodshadow; Dylan wraps it in vines and pries the gap wider with his staff; Bud lands a frostfire cut and takes a blow that caves in his chestplate; Hump burns the exposed star with Fire Ray and is knocked down with cracked ribs. When the creature moves to finish him, Lucile steps in front of it. It calls her its pet and offers to spare her if she stands aside. She refuses, and it drives elongated claws through her stomach. Watching her die, Hump decides he would rather become a warlock than let anyone else be killed. Lucile dies. Bud, badly wounded, cauterizes his own chest with frostfire and pulls the creature off Hump. Vivienne strips away the last of its stone armor, leaving only a small struggling spirit, and it fastens on Bud and begins draining his soul, until Hump rises with fully black eyes, punches through it, seizes Hestia's Star bare-handed, and drags the fight into his own soul-void. Inside, the thing's soul turns out not to be one soul at all, but a crumpled composite of every creature it has ever eaten.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

In the void Hump impales the gorger's composite soul on needles of essence, using the memory of Lucile's death as fuel, and begins to enjoy it, drifting close to being consumed by his own power rather than by the creature. His friends' voices reach him from outside, Dylan channels healing essence into him, and his head clears enough to give an order: Bud freezes the star from within with frostfire while Hump holds the creature's essence in place, and Celaine's arrow shatters it. Rather than let the fragments reform, Hump lets the dragon out completely and shreds every last piece. As it dies he catches flashes of what it had been: an ancient people driven underground long ago by an overwhelming power the book never names, left to starve until they survived by devouring their own kind and any other soul they could reach. Then his own unleashed essence turns on him. Instead of fighting it with raw will he calms himself and reasons through it, treating it as a river to be redirected rather than a battle to be won, and takes it back, confirming to himself plainly that even in total surrender his warlock side never took him over. He wakes held up by Bud and Celaine with Dylan healing him, and is told he hurt no one; Bud had restrained him. Lucile's body cannot be recovered and is left behind. Hump tells the others she had been possessed, as Albry had been. Of the roughly twenty rescued townsfolk, fifteen survive the temple's collapse. Hump seals the doors with an ancient locking formation his spellbook names the Three-Eyed Seal, written in a script older than the kingdom's own, the first complete example of exactly what Vivienne has spent four years hunting. She floats them up to the surface and a small island as dawn breaks.

Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)

Randall comes for them personally with eight boats, drawn by their signal fire; Skander survived his own run-in with the creature. A cleric and the town physician patch them up, Vivienne worst of all: frostbite on two fingers and a body-wide cold from what is termed essence overuse, weeks from recovery. Fishers Lake welcomes them back and the mayor offers them a permanent home. Elowen buries the dead, Winfrey Pesh among them, and Fredricks is promoted to captain in his place. Hump tells his friends everything about his month in captivity for the first time; Bud blames himself for it all and is absolved. Vivienne admits her insubordination to Helen Astida and buys a one-week delay on the report, and the Wizard Society tribunal that will follow, by trading the party's intelligence about the remnant realm's sky full of rifts, which they agree must reach Countess Daston and other factions. She says privately she is not worried, since she does not depend on the Society, and means to spend that week in the ruins before other researchers arrive. She asks to test Hump's soul, reveals that she warned Sethril about soul damage some twenty years ago and could never fix it, gives Hump a spellbook of her own invented spells, and tells him she should have recognized him as Sethril's true apprentice sooner. The three agree to head for Sheercliff and take safer work for a while, and Bud wants Dylan recruited. Hump keeps the egg close but pauses bonding for a week or two, wary of his own soul. He is sleeping badly and reliving the void. Late one night Celaine wakes him from a nightmare and, satisfied he is safe, leaves. After she goes, what appears to be Lucile is sitting on the other bed in a plain white dress, speaking to him as though nothing had happened. The book ends there. Whether she is a hallucination, a haunting, or something else is not answered.

How does it end? (ending)

The gorger is destroyed for good, unmade inside Hump's own soul-void after Lucile dies shielding him. Her body is left in the collapsing temple, and five of the roughly twenty rescued townsfolk die during the escape, leaving fifteen. Hump proved he can surrender completely to the dragon's power and still reclaim himself, but he ends the book physically battered and carrying untreated trauma: insomnia, nightmares, a startle response. He has only just agreed to let Vivienne test his soul, and has paused bonding with the dragon egg as a precaution. Vivienne survives with frostbite and a condition termed essence overuse, and faces a Wizard Society tribunal for insubordination that she has bought a week's delay on; she is unbothered by it, and has recommitted to mentoring Hump personally, revealing that she warned Sethril about his own soul damage some twenty years ago and could never fix it. Bud, close to a third circle, wants the party to take safer work and to recruit Dylan. Celaine has already reached her third circle. Randall and Helen Astida will pass the party's warning about the remnant realm's rifts to Countess Daston and other factions, and Fredricks is Fishers Lake's new captain of the guard. The three plan to ride for Sheercliff. Then, late at night, after Celaine wakes Hump from a nightmare and leaves, what appears to be Lucile is sitting on the other bed in a plain white dress, speaking to him as though nothing had happened. The book ends there. Whether she is a hallucination, a haunting, or something else is not answered on the page, and neither is what Hump means when he says she had been possessed as Albry was.
