The Hedge Wizard 4 recap

By Alex Maher

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

Hump and Celaine ride north to Drakalyn so he can attempt the Dragon Keeper trials and secure his bond with his hatched dragon, Nishari. On the road they take in a gnoll and her pup, pick up a trapped spirit named Walt from an abandoned mine, and are hunted by a shapeshifter who is soon captured and enslaved by Irila, an ancient lich queen whose undead are pressing on Drakalyn from the ruined city of Estora. Hump passes all three trials, is made dragon-blooded, and then refuses the goddess Owalyn's blessing, choosing his own path and his place as an outsider. Drakalyn goes to war. In the climax beneath Estora, Hump cripples Irila with White Flame and launches Walt into her exposed phylactery, Yunillia destroys her body, and Celaine destroys her fleeing soul for good. Walt proves to be a house spirit and claims the lich's phylactery, a pocket-dimension library, which the elders award to Hump. A freed Owalyn tells Hump the Pantheon may have stolen its power from a wandering wizard whose owl familiar was named Glyndaril, and Hump prepares to leave for Sheercliff with Celaine, keeping the story secret.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hump is a hedge wizard, raised and trained by the wizard Sethril Woodrow, who died before the story began under circumstances still disputed. From him Hump inherited the Book of Infinite Pages, a living spellbook bound to his soul. Over the previous book he was framed as a suspect in his master's death and then caught up in the Blackstone Warlocks' siege of Sheercliff. A warlock of extraordinary power set a citywide ritual that would have sacrificed every soul in the city to summon Baelkor, the first servant of a fallen god; Hump broke the ritual by destroying its anchoring tree with an original spell, White Flame, and the warlock escaped by blood magic and vowed to return. In the aftermath Hump absorbed every foreign essence imprinted on his soul and achieved a full soul manifestation, and a posthumous letter from his master confirmed that the spellbook is alive and grows more detectable to hunters as its wielder advances. An Inquisitor who had ambushed him to steal it was imprisoned, having named an order that styles itself the heir to the book. Publicly hailed as the White Flame, Hump was gifted a manor, library access and a new staff by Countess Daston, who survived her wounds but lost the use of her legs. His party then split: Bud, Dylan and Emilia rode for House Blackthorne to await a kingdom-wide call to arms, and Vivienne stayed in Sheercliff in the Countess's service. Hump's dragon egg hatched into a bonded companion, Nishari, and he set out north with Celaine for the Dragon Keeper trials. In the closing scene his spellbook revealed a hidden, god-tier essence core marked with a silver owl, left unexplained.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Five days after the siege, Countess Daston intercepts Hump on his last afternoon of library access. She already knows he is bound for Drakalyn and the goddess Owalyn, and gives him a sealed letter proposing open communication between Sheercliff and the dragon keepers. The next morning the party rides out and splits at a fork: Bud, Dylan and Emilia continue to Blackthorne Manor with a funeral wagon and a cold escort of knights, Vivienne turns back to the city, and Hump and Celaine ride north alone with the hatchling Nishari hidden in a pouch. Two weeks on, in the border town of Suncrest, Celaine is harassed at a tavern and subdues an off-duty guard. The town's mayor accuses the pair of assault and demands they submit to a warlock test. Hump manifests his soul to overwhelm her guards, Celaine holds a blade to her throat, and the two ride out, leaving a regional bounty behind them. A stranger named Winston Irons then walks uninvited into the mayor's office claiming to hunt the same wizard and huntress, his eyes turning black and red when she presses him on who he is. Beyond the border, Hump heals a wounded gnoll, Rehk, in exchange for guidance over the mountains, and she and her pup Tokdaar join the party. Rehk speaks repeatedly of a dead queen who destroyed her pack. Crossing into the Fallen Lands, the group is ambushed at night by monsters carried on an animated mist, and flees through a corrupted marsh, where Hump and Celaine go over a cliff edge and are swept down a river gorge while Rehk, Tokdaar and the horses take another route and rejoin them. They shelter in an abandoned essence mine, where a voice calls out of the dark asking to be freed.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

The voice in the mine belongs to Walt, a spirit sealed in an unusually large essence stone among centuries-old bones, who gives his full name as Walter Flint. He says he was a miner who died some four hundred years ago and is shaken to learn the year. Hump's attempt to release him fails, an unexplained surge of power flows into Hump instead, and the party brings the stone along rather than leave him. At the mountain pass, Winston intercepts them with six hired men. Celaine's ambush opens the fight, and Winston proves to be a shapeshifter, turning through cat, snake, bear and fox as runes move beneath his skin and his wounds knit shut. Hump kills several mercenaries with a lava spell and drives Winston off wounded. A dying man reveals Winston was following a scent rather than hunting the pair by name; his hunger fixed on both the spellbook and Nishari. From a ridge the party sights Estora, an ancient ruined city, lit by a flash of purple light that Hump reads as death magic. Hump buries two giants under an avalanche that destroys the road and draws a flying scout, and the dead queen's forces come after them: zombie wolves, skeletal horsemen and specters under unnatural storm clouds. Making a stand at Fire Pass, Hump opens a lava barrier across the valley and sees the Lich Queen herself at a distance, pale and gaunt with glowing purple eyes. Her spell disintegrates the ground; Hump survives behind his staff's enchantment while Celaine wounds her at point-blank range. Rehk's howls bring a gnoll warband that destroys the pursuing undead, and its chieftain grants the party passage. Elsewhere, Bud reaches home to a cold reception and breaks with his father for good.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

The chieftain gives his name as Rakar and hosts the party, until three dragons land at his encampment. The riders are Tessa, a senior keeper and Vamir's teacher; Gawain; and Finnian, who accuses Hump of stealing the egg that became Nishari and demands his death. Tessa is courteous instead, notes Nishari's rare gold colouring, and invites him to fly back to keeper territory with her. Meanwhile Winston wakes chained in a cell. The lich queen is named on the page for the first time as Irila. She has tortured out of him that a wizard carries something of interest to her, binds a rune collar into his soul, and takes him into her service, promising him more than a hatchling. Hump and Celaine reach Drakalyn: a colossal tree at its heart, the Temple of the Everflame beside it, and wolf dragons at the settlement's edge. Rehk and Tokdaar say their farewells. At the threshold Owalyn draws Hump's spirit into her domain, senses the lingering essence of the fallen god Uvdar on him and demands an explanation, then begins his first trial on the spot. It proves to be an assault on his soul that drives him back through his own memories; when he stops resisting and answers honestly that he seeks the strength to protect what matters to him, she passes him. She also tells him plainly that she was once mortal, and implies the same of gods generally. The Elder Trinity, Rena, Ashera and Sulamir, argue over an outsider's presence and accept him on Owalyn's endorsement, over Ashera's objection. Countess Daston's letter is delivered and taken under consideration. Hump is assigned a personal instructor: Ado, a shaman whose son was killed years ago by dragon hunters out of Alveron, and under whom no apprentice has lasted long.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Vamir tells Hump the wilderness around Drakalyn has grown far more dangerous over the past year, and wonders whether it connects to warnings of a coming War of the Firmament. He reacts with open discomfort to Owalyn's claim that gods were once mortal, and tells Hump to keep it to himself. Training under Ado begins. He is gruff, sixth circle, and deliberately not a keeper, having taken some other path tied to tattoos on his body. He keeps his dead son's dragon, Stonefang, crippled and joyless in a barn behind his house, and shows Hump plainly what becomes of a dragon whose keeper dies. Celaine's sister Myra visits the old dragon regularly; she is flat and distant, and Ado notes the two share a great loss. At the Temple of Moss, Ado teaches Hump the lesson he keeps failing: to work with essence's natural tendencies rather than command it by will. At a family dinner, Celaine's household proves warm, though her uncle distrusts outsiders and the Pantheon, doubts the elders will answer Countess Daston's letter, and presses Celaine toward Finnian. Celaine explains that Owalyn cannot leave her territory around Drakalyn, bound by a pact with the Pantheon; she rejects Hump's suggestion that this makes the goddess a prisoner. The Everflame flares, and keepers fly south: Irila is scouting Drakalyn's borders with undead crows. Hump enchants a pair of boots for stealth ahead of a hunt organised to celebrate Celaine's return, its purpose to kill the guardian of a new dungeon north of the settlement.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

The hunt goes into an acid-corrupted dungeon. Finnian, fifth circle, dominates most of the fighting; Hump holds a defensive role, and Celaine kills the guardian, a giant beetle queen. As her graduation offering she claims the dungeon core, and her sixth blessing begins manifesting on the spot. With her soul exposed, Irila's power reaches her directly and starts to kill her. Hump shields her soul with his own until Owalyn manifests through Celaine's body, names the attacker as Irila, and drives the corruption out. The dead beetles rise as undead; Hump burns the dungeon by having Finnian's dragon ignite its toxic fog while he shelters the group behind his staff's stored enchantment. Shamans conclude Irila had been secretly corrupting the essence spring beneath the dungeon, likely through a dark artifact, which is how she reached inside Owalyn's own domain. Then the Everflame burns green: a keeper and dragon have been killed in an ambush at Fire Pass. The wounded patrol leader reports the old fortification Highgaze has fully fallen, and calls for war. Sulamir reports Owalyn is not answering and that there is a sickness in the tree, his theory being that she is personally holding back the corruption at cost to herself. Word is sent to Yunillia, the Stormcaller, who leads the keepers and is said to be the most powerful of Owalyn's chosen. Rena declares Drakalyn will go to war, targeting the summer solstice to retake lost ground. Ado proposes Hump attempt the second trial, the Trial of Resolve: to be made dragon-blooded outright, a transformation normally undergone gradually from childhood and excruciating when forced on an adult. Hump accepts.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Inside Estora, Winston secretly maps Irila's palace while still bound to her, finding a workshop of unfinished corpse-and-metal monstrosities. Irila feeds him a slain wolf dragon. Drakalyn mobilises fully. Celaine presents the dungeon core at the Everflame and takes Nishari to her mother Vindari's heartstone in the temple crypt. Tracing the corruption with Ado and Sulamir, Hump uncovers a network of buried rat remains laid out as a deliberate formation, apparently used for years to spread Irila's influence through the forest unseen. Ado demonstrates a partial dragon transformation, is addressed as Packmaster, and is revealed to have once led Owalyn's elite hunters. Finnian takes Celaine to dinner and asks her to commit to a future together in Drakalyn. She refuses, saying she means to keep travelling. He calls Hump nothing and a weak little man, dismisses his part in saving her, and grabs her hand when she tries to leave; she strikes him with a shadow bolt and goes. She is reassigned away from his unit to hunt under Keeper Rujan instead, and it is confirmed she has agreed to leave Drakalyn with Hump once the war ends. Hump admits to her he does not like the idea of her settling down with Finnian. Her uncle apologises to Hump for his earlier rudeness and thanks him for saving her. Then Hump walks to the altar in the Temple of the Everflame, is bound at the wrists and ankles, and Rena drives six needles of dragon blood into his heart. Enduring it, he unintentionally reaches every wolf dragon in Drakalyn at once, and the whole village erupts in a chorus roar. The crowd calls him a demon. Something beyond even Owalyn turns to watch him.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

The presence is Skyfire, a true dragon unseen in Alveron for over a thousand years. A silver owl stands beside him, the same presence bound to the heartstone in Hump's spellbook. Skyfire studies him and leaves without explanation; Owalyn, who calls him an old acquaintance, will not elaborate. She confirms Hump has passed the Trial of Resolve and names him dragon-blooded, saying he is the first outsider Drakalyn has blooded in centuries. He wakes with one eye red and slit-pupilled, stronger, faster, and permanently hungrier. Commanding the book to show him its heart, Hump transforms its cover into the silver-owl heartstone and pushes his soul to reach it. A voice says "Not yet" and knocks him out. Yunillia arrives home mid-trial, hostile at first, then takes both Hump and Celaine into her own hunting unit. Under keeper Leif, they storm a lich-held lake temple to purify a poisoned essence spring; Hump destroys a skeletal spellcaster with a new spell, Yunillia kills the garrison's skeleton lord, and the corrupted agents are cut down. Hump concludes Irila's light defence means her real objective lies elsewhere. He then collapses a second smuggled tunnel through the mountains, overshooting so badly that he carves a chasm into the peak. Over the following weeks his standing shifts from suspect outsider to trusted heavy asset, and Drakalyn reclaims nearly all its lost ground except Fort Highgaze. On the morning of the solstice counterattack, Yunillia takes him aside and gives him an assignment she implies is dangerous.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

The assignment is to infiltrate Fort Highgaze through a hidden passage and bring down its shield from within. Celaine insists on coming. Before the army, Owalyn manifests in person and grants every hunter her boon; Hump, not one of her chosen, finds he can draw on it anyway, and Nishari breathes real fire for the first time. Inside, Walt speaks privately into Hump's mind for the first time, warns of a hidden ward that Hump's own essence sight missed, and is proven right. It is revealed that Ashera once led Drakalyn's keepers before losing her dragon, which explains her hostility. Yunillia leaps alone among the undead giants and manifests a seventh blessing, a spear of living lightning. Two of Irila's lieutenants hold the keep: a robed commander who denies being Irila, and a skeletal High General who summons a plague demon. Hump melts one shield runestone and Finnian destroys another; the shield falls, and Hump forges a compressed molten projectile that blows the fortress gates apart. Ado's healer is killed by a wraith, which Celaine kills in turn. Hump destroys the plague demon. Yunillia runs the robed commander through, but at the moment of death Irila speaks through the body to taunt her and casts a curse directly onto her soul. The fort is retaken, but the mood is grim. Hump takes a fractured rib. Ado reveals the war's next objective: Irila's phylactery, believed hidden somewhere in Estora. Yunillia thanks Hump publicly and implies his third trial is near. He privately reaffirms that he still means to leave once the war is over.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Days later Hump is summoned without warning before nearly everyone he knows in Drakalyn. Owalyn manifests above the great tree and announces his final trial, the Trial of the Heart, a test of character rather than skill, and then offers him her personal blessing and a place as a keeper. The offered power nearly takes him. He is shown the life he could have: belonging, protection, status. Walt's voice and his dead master's teaching pull him back, and he recognises the offer as the same shape as every easy power he has refused before. He declines, respectfully, choosing his own path as a wizard. Owalyn confirms the offer was genuine, says she is not disappointed in his reasoning, and tells him he will never be of Drakalyn. The crowd reacts with shock and anger, and many refuse to meet his eyes. Yunillia publicly defends his right to refuse and calls him a friend, and the crowd falls silent. She then asks him to step back from combat while the elders work out what to do with a man who is bonded and dragon-blooded but not a keeper. Celaine admits she is relieved. Yunillia then leads him through a hidden passage in the Temple of the Everflame to an enormous, ancient wolf dragon named Algwyn, missing one front and one back leg and tended by Ashera. Algwyn examines his soul and grants him a soul-name, Ignarok, fire and stone; both women react with a shock they refuse to explain. Yunillia reveals that no one has ascended to godhood in a thousand years, since the War of the Firmament, and that Owalyn is confined to Drakalyn by the Pantheon. Drakalyn's brood mother, Janeen, takes on Nishari's training. Celaine is redeployed toward Estora.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Over the following month Celaine takes her first independent command, holding a watchtower with ten hunters, killing an undead commander with a single arrow to trigger an ambush, and later destroying a five-thousand-strong force by capturing the mobile shrine that powers Irila's armies with essence. The war itself grinds to a stalemate; Drakalyn's only real path to victory is the phylactery. Sidelined in Drakalyn, Hump trains Nishari and unlocks a rare dragon-blooded ability through his red eye: spirit sight, which lets him perceive souls and essence directly. Ado says Elder Ashera is the only other living person known to have it. Ashera confirms it in him and then refuses to teach him, revealing why she hates outsiders: her bonded dragon Hisarun was killed roughly two hundred years ago by Alveronian chosen she had sheltered and fed, who cut his throat while she slept. She does not quite close the door. Ado, for his part, speaks his dead son's name aloud for the first time. Yunillia spends nearly a month in isolation managing Irila's curse. Gnoll distress howls bring Ado's hunters south, where Rakar's pack, including Rehk and Tokdaar, is in fighting retreat; Hump destroys the shadow chariot shielding the undead from sunlight, and the gnolls are given refuge. Rakar warns the undead came through tunnels beneath the mountains in numbers never seen, and that more are coming. Irila then launches a full coordinated assault. The corruption formation near the lake temple, believed destroyed, erupts back to life. Hump joins Celaine's squad unofficially. Then Nishari senses something badly wrong at the temple's dragon nest.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

They reach the nest too late. Janeen has been killed and partly eaten, a quarter of the eggs are smashed, and the thing feeding on a hatchling is Winston, half man and half dragon now and far stronger, with Irila's runes burned into his neck. Hump manifests his soul as a dragon, drawing on power he realises Owalyn is lending him; Celaine saves a hostage egg and Finnian and his dragon savage Winston enough to take him alive. The runes burn him whenever he tries to speak against Irila. Owalyn speaks privately into Hump's mind, has the interrogation moved, and guides him through an unfamiliar ritual that suppresses the binding. Winston gives up the phylactery's location: tunnels far beneath the palace at Estora. Yunillia kills him with a knife and calls the strike immediately. Owalyn gives Hump a seed of the great tree to sharpen his spirit sight against Irila's power, an identical seed to Ashera as backup, a permanent affinity with nature, and a promise to explain the silver owl afterward. Yunillia explains her curse honestly and agrees that Ashera takes command, and that the others should stop her, if it takes her. Nine fly to Estora. Hump reads the city and judges the arena a lure and the palace's faint reading a concealment; Yunillia bypasses Ado's besieged force and strikes the palace directly. An armoured champion rides out on the reanimated corpse of a keeper's dragon. Inside the great hall the team is broken: Lia is killed, a pale red-eyed woman mauls Yunillia, and Yunillia is run through and left behind holding the enemy. Ashera takes command and finds a hidden stair down.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

Below the palace they pass through Irila's laboratory, kill two stitched-together hybrids that may once have been people, and emerge over a vast cavern. At its centre a huge white stone burns, the corrupted core of an older dungeon Irila simply took over as her power source, surrounded by thirteen chanting apprentices behind a shield. Ashera reveals Estora and its tunnels were built by that ancient dungeon long before Irila's time. Spirit sight pierces a veil at the back: Irila herself, a shrunken husk dormant on a stone throne, wearing a golden crown that might be the phylactery. Walt, near the chamber, turns quiet and serious and says he senses something ancient ahead. Ashera's plan is to bring the ceiling down. Hump carves four rockslide formations into it in under ten minutes, falling into a flow state that finally makes sense of Ado's teaching. Then Irila rises in person, halts the battle by presence alone, calls Hump's work potential, and offers to recruit him against what she calls the stain of the gods. He refuses. Ashera holds her off alone and Hump triggers the collapse without waiting for her to reach safety, over Finnian's objection. The roof breaks through to the surface. Celaine shatters her pendant and Hump calls the dragons over distance through his blood bond; they answer with the name Ignarok. Yunillia returns alive with the keepers. Irila's shield survives the collapse. She reveals she holds a weapon that can slay gods, and that the keepers were only ever a decoy. Hump's spirit sight finds soul-essence rising from beneath the throne, not the crown.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

At Drakalyn, Owalyn appears to a dying Vamir, heals him and raises him to the fourth circle. Moments later a wave of purple light rolls out of Estora and the Great Tree visibly wilts. Gawain's dragon is killed in the cavern. Hump breaks the throne's five-point ward with a technique Vivienne taught him, opening a stairwell; Ashera reappears alive to drive Irila back, and Hump and Celaine descend alone. Walt warns them not to touch the walls: countless suffering souls are sealed in the stone. The phylactery is an exposed crystal orb behind a ward that drains essence and is reinforced by those spirits. Walt proposes going inside it himself to contest Irila's soul, and Hump agrees. Irila arrives. Nothing they have touches her. She reveals that a figure called Hestia created Fishers Lake to destroy the Temple of the Three Eyes during the War of the Firmament, confirms her weapon was aimed at Owalyn and has already struck, and recognises the Book of Infinite Pages as having belonged to a man who brought the pantheon to its knees. As her pressure nearly breaks him, Hump channels the trapped souls' suffering into White Flame, and burns away her arm and much of her torso. She rises anyway and tortures him. Celaine shatters the ward with a precision shot through a flaw Irila tore in it herself, and Hump launches Walt into the orb. Irila's soul flees back into her body and heals it, but Yunillia arrives and puts a fist through her heart. The soul then possesses the curse-weakened Yunillia; Hump and Celaine force it out, and Celaine cuts it apart until it stops reforming. Irila is dead. The undead army and the dark sky collapse at once.

Story so far - through chapter 86 (this book)

Walt reveals himself: not a human ghost but a house spirit, a minor deity-adjacent being whose home city was destroyed generations ago by Pantheon forces, later trapped in an amulet and used as a power source until his captor died in the mine. The library is a pocket dimension Irila had converted into her true phylactery, and he has begun taking it over. The cost of victory is counted: four dragon keepers and six dragons dead at Estora, Elder Ashera killed as well, and 462 more from the wider lake battle, including six of Vamir's students. Through a buried Eye, Hump witnesses Owalyn killing a powerful man in the War of the Firmament while a young, human Irila cries out to him as Father. Hump nearly kills himself training his spirit well alone at night, but survives with a deeper soul. The elders accept Countess Daston's alliance, send Celaine to represent Drakalyn with Tessa negotiating, invite Hump and Nishari along, grant Celaine leave to rejoin her old party afterward, and award Hump the lich's phylactery as payment. Finnian apologises to them both. Rehk's gnolls leave to reclaim their mountains. Owalyn then appears to Hump in person, free of the binding that turns out to have been her prison, having used the aftermath of Irila's strike to break her own seal. Irila's father was a minor plague god whom Owalyn had killed personally, and Irila forged her weapon from his dying hate. Owalyn gives Hump a healing sprig cut from the dying tree and a standing favour, and he declines her blessing a second time. She then tells him, as an explicitly unverified story, that the Pantheon's thirteen founders stole their power from a wandering wizard, the original owner of his spellbook, whose silver owl familiar Glyndaril died protecting his escape and whose heartstone became the weapon that destroyed their city. Hump keeps this from Bud, Dylan and Emilia over Celaine's objection. The book ends with the two of them planning to leave for Sheercliff by dragonback within the week.

How does it end? (ending)

Irila is destroyed in body and soul, and her undead army and the corrupted sky over Drakalyn collapse with her, implying her power had held both together. The cost is heavy: four dragon keepers and six dragons die at Estora, Elder Ashera is killed as well, and 462 more are confirmed dead from the wider lake battle, including six of Vamir's students. Vamir survives, healed and raised to the fourth circle by Owalyn herself, but is left guilt-ridden. Yunillia survives Irila's attempt to possess her. Finnian has fully reconciled with Hump and Celaine. Rehk and the gnolls leave to reclaim the mountains as their home. Walt, revealed as a house spirit rather than a human ghost, takes over Irila's former phylactery, a pocket-dimension library, and the elders formally award it to Hump as payment. Owalyn appears to Hump in person, free at last of a binding to the Great Tree that turns out to have been her prison, gives him a healing artifact and a standing favour, and tells him an unverified legend in which the Pantheon's founders stole their power from a wandering wizard whose slain owl familiar was Glyndaril. Hump now privately associates his spellbook with that name, and chooses to keep the whole account from Bud, Dylan and Emilia over Celaine's objection. The Great Tree is left dying. Hump, Celaine, Nishari and the keeper Tessa are set to leave for Sheercliff by dragonback within the week, to formalise Drakalyn's new alliance with Countess Daston.
