In short (whole book)

Hump returns from Drakalyn to Sheercliff as the famous White Flame, then rides to the Fort Nordric front with Celaine and his dragon Nisha to reunite with Bud, Dylan, and Emilia and help destroy the demon dungeon called the Infernal Halls. Along the way he foils warlocks at the Sapphire Docks, learns that twelve seals hold back the ancient gods, and is folded into an elite force that infiltrates the Halls, a pocket world ruled by the demon lord Dravor. Breaking through a living wall and taking the citadel, Hump is dragged into the private soul-domain of the ancient devil Karlak Gormoth, who hunts his living spellbook; Hump masters hellfire and maims Karlak, and the Iron Hand, secretly a member of the Three Eyes, arrives to seal the devil away. But the whole campaign was bait: Dravor escapes with the dungeon core while the warlock Order of Ancients strikes the kingdom's seals, burning Alveron's cities. The book reveals it was made by a wandering wizard the Pantheon betrayed and names Hump his heir, exposing that the gods' blessings enslave their Chosen. Overriding the book's guardian, Hump seizes a warlock gateway and tears open a rift to the invaded homeland, commanding the army to advance as the series ends on the brink of open war against the Pantheon.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hump is a hedge wizard, raised and trained by the wizard Sethril Woodrow, who died before the series began. From him Hump inherited the Book of Infinite Pages, a living spellbook bound to his soul that grows more detectable to hunters as its wielder advances. Framed and hunted, Hump was drawn into the warlocks' siege of Sheercliff, which he broke with an original spell, White Flame, becoming publicly known as the White Flame; Countess Daston, crippled in the siege, made him her patron. His party then scattered, with the knight Bud, the druid Dylan, and the duelist Emilia riding to the Fallen Lands front, while Hump and the archer Celaine travelled north to Drakalyn, home of the wolf dragons, where his egg had hatched into his bonded dragon, Nisha. At Drakalyn Hump passed the Dragon Keeper trials and was made dragon-blooded, but refused the goddess Owalyn's blessing, keeping his own path as a wizard and an outsider. Drakalyn then went to war with the lich queen Irila; in the climax Hump, Celaine, and their allies destroyed her, and the spirit Walt, freed from her phylactery, became Hump's librarian in a captured pocket-dimension library. A newly freed Owalyn told Hump a secret legend: the Pantheon's founders stole their power from a wandering wizard whose slain owl familiar, Glyndaril, is bound into Hump's book, a story Hump keeps from all but Celaine. The book ended with Hump, Celaine, and Nisha preparing to leave for Sheercliff.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Hump, Celaine, and the hatchling Nisha fly south from Drakalyn escorted by the dragon keeper Tessa, bound for Sheercliff to formalise Drakalyn's alliance with the Dastons. Crossing Alveron's dragon-hostile borderlands they are ambushed by an adventuring band that mistakes them for poachers; the three subdue the group without killing them, and an older archer recognises Hump as the White Flame who burned the Tree of Damnation. Reaching Sheercliff, they are welcomed at Countess Daston's estate: the Countess still wheelchair-bound, the noblewoman Marcela recovered from a Fallen Lands injury, and the wizard Vivienne now in the Countess's service. Hump is besieged by factions eager to recruit the famous White Flame, chiefly the Sheercliff Wizard Society. He learns the inquisitor Eliana was executed for murdering his master, and reads a backlog of letters confirming Bud, Dylan, and Emilia are alive and fighting at Fort Nordric, though Bud is wracked with guilt over soldiers lost under his command. Hump heals Countess Daston enough to walk again with Owalyn's silver sprig, and privately shares the full Drakalyn story, including the wandering-wizard legend, with Vivienne, who swears it to secrecy. With the spirit Walt sorting the captured lich library, Hump confirms that items can be removed from the pocket-dimension, and the party prepares to leave for Fort Nordric with Marcela's expedition.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Touring the Sheercliff Wizard Society, Hump quietly gathers spells while deflecting both the Society's and the Inquisition's competing offers to recruit him, trading Drakalyn heartstones for high-tier spellbooks rather than committing to either. Tessa and her dragon depart for Drakalyn, leaving Hump a dragon-keeper's primer for Nisha, whose growth and golden sheen are unusually strong for her age, perhaps tied to essence she absorbed before hatching. Vivienne, decoding the lich library, finds warlock binding-runes that tie the books to the losing side of the ancient War of the Firmament and the fallen god Uvdar. Then Countess Daston summons Hump with grave news: the Fallen Lands dungeon near Fort Nordric, now named the Infernal Halls, has loosed a demon assault that nearly overran the fortress. She and Marcela formally ask Hump and Celaine to join the reinforcement expedition, led by the gold-ranked General Corteg, to clear the dungeon. Fearing for their friends, the pair accept, and both pass the Adventurers' Guild exam to be certified Silver Rank.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Certified and equipped, Hump and Celaine march north with the roughly three-hundred-strong expedition, reunited on the road with the disgraced Lord Randall Ferrand, shunned since his father sided with the warlocks. The column finds a massacred convoy, and Hump leads a small team to hunt the demon raiders, wiping them out and healing a mutilated survivor with the silver sprig. Meanwhile, at the front, Bud, now known as the Frost Knight, leads his company clearing keeps under Overseer Oswald, haunted by his losses, while the Inquisition begins to suspect the demons that breached Fort Nordric had human help. The expedition reaches the war-scarred fortress-city, and Hump, Celaine, and Nisha reunite with Dylan, then Bud and Emilia. The friends trade stories: Hump recounts Drakalyn and the lich queen's fall, still hiding Owalyn's freedom even from Celaine; Bud and Emilia have both reached the fourth circle; and Fort Nordric now stands as the last great fortress on the northern line. The reunited party agrees to fight together under Bud's command, with their first joint mission a suspected new dungeon node near Rock Tower Keep.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

At a homecoming feast for Marcela, Hump meets a First Order wizard, a warlock specialist who eyes his swift rise with suspicion, and an inquisitor, both seeking his help against local warlocks; Bud and Emilia quietly acknowledge they are now engaged. The party then marches on the Rock Tower node, a fungal dungeon worked by enslaved fellspawn demons. Fighting down through mushroom grottos, they weather an ambush and a ceiling collapse that Hump single-handedly catches and redirects, and reach the node's core, guarded by some fifty demons. Dylan fells a beast-juggernaut with his guardian tree-form, and the party confronts the true node-master: a floating, many-mouthed mind eater that turns soldiers into puppets and downs the company's casters. They lure it into Dylan's vine-domain and pin it; Hump opens a molten pit against it, and Emilia, discarding the buckler that held her back, drives her family's soul-piercing transcending blade through its core, killing it, and awakens her own soul in the act.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

At the emptied node the party finds a portal into another world, through which a black-winged demon speaks: Karlak Gormoth, who recognises the Book of Infinite Pages, refuses to burn it, hails Hump as its wielder and bearer of Glyndaril, and vows to return with an offer he cannot refuse; the shaken party agrees to keep the encounter secret. Handing the node to the Inquisition, Hump bargains his way into their warlock intelligence and meets the First Order wizard properly, the legendary hunter called the Iron Hand, who reveals that twelve seals across Alveron imprison the ancient gods and hold back another War of the Firmament, and that the warlocks destroyed the second of them at Sheercliff. He suspects the Infernal Halls itself may be a warlock-created dungeon. Hump gains high-tier spells and is folded into the expedition's protection. Then a monster wave crashes against Fort Nordric; mid-battle the Iron Hand warns that warlocks inside the city are steering the deadly red fog from the Sapphire Docks and striking at the Temple of Sanctum, and sends Bud's party to destroy the fog at its source.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Bud's party fights through the docks to a warlock base beneath a tavern, where a warlock turns her patrons into monsters before they capture her. Descending sea-carved tunnels, they find over twenty warlocks channelling power into a fleshy artifact; Hump's plan to collapse the cavern is frozen and hurled back by a telekinetic greater demon, and only Bud's frostfire and Celaine's final arrow bring it down. The artifact proves to be the source of the red fog, sitting beside a two-way Infernal Gateway to the demon dungeon, power beyond the party and handed to High Command. The fog recedes and the Temple's seal holds. The campaign turns to a northern counter-offensive, and Bud's company leaves Oswald's command for the Sheercliff retinue. That night a foreign warlock breaks into their lodgings hunting the Book, mistakes Celaine for the wizard he was sent for, and is killed by Hump and Nisha, marking the book as the target of an unknown faction from lands across the sea.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

Hump revives the ensorcelled Celaine and studies the dead intruder's strange ouroboros mark, a magic even the Iron Hand does not recognise. At High Command, the party is folded into an elite operation against the Infernal Halls: a pocket world tethered by a dungeon core, ringed by twelve chieftain-run regions that feed a demon lord's central keep. Three small squads will slip in through defeated dungeon nodes to disrupt the fortified gate from within so the army can breach it; Celaine's rare veil-piercing sight is the party's qualifying asset, and a soul-touching oath binds them all against a suspected leak in High Command. The Iron Hand privately reveals the recent Temple battle was a trap engineered by Countess Daston's foresight: Count Daston's injury was faked, and General Corteg had secretly risen to the eighth circle. The warlocks' true base lies inside the Infernal Halls, and he judges Hump near tier-six magic, held back only by self-doubt. The combined squad sails and marches north to the coastal dungeon node that will carry them in.

Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)

Crossing through the glass-transmuted node and its unsettling halls of memory, where Hump's mirror shows his childhood as a beaten Elenvine orphan, the squad links with the forward party and slips into the Infernal Halls: a scorched pocket world under a starless crimson sky, ruled from an obsidian keep by an Imp Lord. Guided through traps and illusions, they are caught in a mist-ambush at a false lake hiding hundreds of demons. Given a focus-flower by the marshal Anara, Hump finally casts Rivers of Lava for the first time, flooding the battlefield and incinerating the horde, a tier-six breakthrough. Anara charm-marks the Imp Lord and drains his life with her flowers, killing him. Hump, confirmed now a rank-five wizard, sees his book's second internal seal break, unlocking the Secret Arts left by a past owner, beginning with Spell Sculpting, the aligning of a spell with one's own soul.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

From a ridge of bones the squad overlooks the Infernal Gate, a fort held by an orc tribe that worships the demon Gorvol the Invincible, its killbox built to slaughter any assault. Crossing onto a death-god's spirit plane, they infiltrate the fort and set about disabling the essence source that powers its defences. Warlocks teleport reinforcements into the keep; when one pins the wounded Hump, Nisha's scales blaze fully gold and she kills for him, a phoenix-driven transformation that leaves her drained. The defences fall, and General Corteg and Count Daston lead Alveron's army through the opened gate. In the pitched battle the gatekeeper Gorvol proves nearly unkillable; the wounded Anara uses her last charm to force the demon to turn and expose the one scar on its back, Celaine's arrow pierces it clean through, Emilia's blade follows, and the shadow-operative Drexel drives a dagger through its heart to finish it.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

The Infernal Gate fort falls and the army takes its foothold, though the metal-sorcerer Sorin is among the dead and Karlak Gormoth is glimpsed watching from afar, still hunting the Book. The Iron Hand gives Hump a new task: lead a disguised supply convoy as bait for warlock saboteurs on the road to the demon lord's citadel. The trap works, and Hump's party captures a warlock band led by Fiona Heinlock, a highly placed traitor tied to the Fort Nordric siege, with almost no losses. Between duties Hump grinds at Spell Sculpting, and on the eve of the citadel siege he achieves a first real breakthrough, aligning a stone-shaping spell with his soul so the earth moves as an extension of himself. His name is now known to the senior Inquisition, and the mystery of who hunts his book, and why, remains the personal thread he means to chase once free of the dungeon.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Before the Demon Citadel, the army's first breach becomes a massacre: the outer wall is a living amalgam of stitched-together demons that heals instantly and devours the soldiers who pour in. Count Daston proposes a counter drawn from old accounts, in which destruction-specialist earth-wielders tunnel through the wall faster than it can heal, and names the newly rank-five Hump one of the army's key earth-mages, gifting the party fire-and-earth opal amulets. Hump trains for days with the crystal-knight Lady Fentress and the chosen of Assydium to coordinate the breach. When the assault comes, a winged, human-featured devil appears and erases hundreds of soldiers with a wave of purple power, then seals the army inside a barrier with no retreat. It names itself Dravor, Lord of the Red Sky, ruler of the Infernal Halls; while General Corteg holds its attention, the tunnel team begins boring into the living wall.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

Count Daston shatters the living wall with his own seventh blessing and hands the breach to Anara before turning to duel Dravor, and Hump, fusing his soul, his stone-shaping, and a wind-mastery technique, holds the tunnel open at great cost as the army pours into the citadel. Pushing up toward the black keep and the dungeon core, Hump's party frees caged slaves until Karlak Gormoth finally appears in person and demands the Book, offering to spare everyone if Hump names him his heir. Hump refuses, and Karlak drags him, Celaine, and Nisha down into his own soul-domain, a lavish throne hall proving him an ancient being past the seventh rank, older than the Pantheon. He cannot take the Book by force, for it is soul-bound to Hump by blood and guarded by Glyndaril, so he must coerce Hump into surrendering it. Cornered and hunted through the domain's shadows, Celaine calls on Owalyn and, impossibly for a chosen, manifests her own soul as a veil of darkness, turning hunter once more.

Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)

Aided by Glyndaril, who manifests from the book, Hump learns to stop resisting Karlak's hellfire and instead to wield it, becoming one with the flame and burning the devil's hoard of trophies. Unable to beat Karlak outright, Hump blinds his right eye with a point-blank blast from an enchanted ring, shattering his own hand in the process and taking a savage beating alongside Celaine. Karlak then reveals the campaign's great deception: the whole Infernal Halls invasion was bait. While Alveron's army was committed here, the warlock Order of Ancients left the dungeon to strike the kingdom's twelve seals; Karlak shows windows of burning cities, Emilia lying gravely wounded, and Sheercliff already fallen. His aim is chaos and the return of the old gods. At that moment the Iron Hand tears through the weakened veil into the domain to confront the devil.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

The Iron Hand reveals himself as a seventh-rank master of a soul domain and a member of the secretive Three Eyes, come specifically to keep the Book from Karlak. Fighting the devil to a standstill with silver water-magic, he shields Hump, Celaine, and Nisha out through the veil back into the Infernal Halls, where Marcela severs the veil-stones and seals Karlak, alive and permanently one-eyed and vowing to hunt Hump forever, away in his domain. Hump heals the grievously wounded Bud and Emilia with the silver sprig, and the dying dungeon's red sky dissolves as its core is lost. But the victory is hollow: climbing to the core chamber, the party finds it empty. The demon lord Dravor escaped and carried off the dungeon core, exactly as the enemy intended. On the chamber floor lies a vast warlock teleportation formation, and Hump proposes firing it to follow the enemy straight home to Alveron.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

Forcing his will on the book, Hump overrides Glyndaril's refusal for the first time and takes control of the warlock Greater Gateway formation. The book then reveals its author at last: the long-dead wandering wizard, first mage and world whisperer, who made it for revenge on the thirteen who became the Pantheon and stripped him of his power; through Glyndaril's acknowledgement, Hump becomes his heir. The book is a declaration of war on the gods, its message being that the Pantheon's blessings enslave the souls of their Chosen, jail the old gods, and killed its maker, a secret Hump shares only with Celaine, even as a tide of divine blessings recasts the march as a holy war and Bud, ignorant that his own goddess binds him, hails it as righteous. The Iron Hand, revealing his own soul-wound from a warlock group that also killed Hump's master, invites Hump to join the Three Eyes for protection and a path past the seventh rank. With the enemy's catalysts assembled, Hump opens a tall red rift onto a dark, ruined landscape, Alveron under invasion, and commands the elite army to advance. The series ends there, on a war only just beginning: the dungeon core stolen, the seals falling, cities burning, and the true conflict against the Pantheon unfought.

How does it end? (ending)

Book 5 ends mid-turn, launching a larger war rather than resolving one. The Infernal Halls citadel is taken, but the victory is hollow: the demon lord Dravor escaped with the dungeon core, and the campaign was a deliberate feint to draw Alveron's army away while the warlock Order of Ancients struck the kingdom's twelve world-seals. Cities burn; only already-fallen Sheercliff and Fort Nordric are spared, and whether the seals hold or the old gods are freed is left open. Hump survives, transformed: acknowledged as heir to the wandering wizard who created his book, he now knows the book is a weapon against the Pantheon and that the gods' blessings enslave their Chosen, a secret he keeps from all but Celaine. He has forced the book to obey him and opened a warlock Greater Gateway to Alveron, but has not yet reached the seventh rank; the Iron Hand, revealed as one of the Three Eyes, has invited him to join their order for training and protection. Karlak Gormoth is sealed off in his soul-domain, alive and permanently half-blinded, vowing to hunt Hump forever. The core party ends intact and pledged to stay together: Celaine his sole confidante; Bud healed of grievous wounds and hailing a holy war he does not know binds his own soul; Dylan advanced to his fifth circle; Emilia healed of a near-fatal wound; and Nisha exhausted, her golden transformation still unexplained. The final image is Hump opening a red rift onto a dark, ruined Alveron and ordering the elite army through. Open threads: the outcome of the invasion and the seals war, Karlak's and Dravor's eventual reckoning, the true fate of the wandering wizard, and whether Hump joins the Three Eyes and breaks the seventh rank.
