In short (whole book)
Hump, a penniless self-taught hedge wizard, inherits a soul-bound spellbook from his dying master and travels to the newly opened dungeon at Bledsbury, falling in with the earnest knight Bud and the secretive, dangerously skilled Vamir and his companion Celaine. Delving to rescue villagers taken by the dungeon's kobolds, the party is drawn into the schemes of Prince Kassius, an outwardly generous royal who is secretly a warlock and necromancer bent on stealing the power of the gods. In the dungeon's true core chamber they find a dying dragon's soul bound as its guardian, and Kassius unleashes it. To save his friends, Hump binds and absorbs the dragon's power and, aided by a relief party, burns Kassius down to a barely-living husk, only for a masked shadow entity to spirit the prince's body away through a tear in reality. Hump survives as a second-rank wizard now carrying the dragon's power, an unhealed soul injury, and her soul-bonded egg. With Kassius's crimes hidden behind a hero's cover story, Bud, revealed to be a nobleman, and Celaine choose to stay with Hump, and the trio sets out to find a wizard who can train him.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Hump, a self-taught hedge wizard of about sixteen, buries his late master at the forest's edge and inherits his staff, medallion, and a soul-bound spellbook, then rides for the newly opened dungeon at Bledsbury to find work. On the road he falls in with Bud, a warm-hearted young knight sworn to the Goddess of Winter, and the two reach Bledsbury together, short of coin and unable to get the town's Adventurers Guild to recognize Hump's inherited medallion. Joining a dungeon-bound convoy, they meet the mercenary leader Gerard, a small band of northerners, and a secretive, highly skilled swordsman named Vamir traveling with his sharp young companion Celaine. The journey turns grim when the group is attacked by reanimated corpses raised with unusually strong death magic, and they pass a stretch of forest inexplicably burned to ash. At the fortified encampment outside the dungeon, Hump and Bud accept Vamir's offer to join his four-person party, despite Hump's unease about him. Delving into unmapped tunnels, the party finds evidence that the dungeon's kobolds have been capturing and butchering people, and closes in on cages of living human prisoners held deep underground.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
The party fights free and rescues the caged villagers, Hump shattering a tunnel wall with a dangerously overcharged spell to cover their escape. Back at the surface, the survivors reveal the true scale of the disaster: a nearby village has been raided and hundreds of its people taken or killed. The dungeon's Overseer, a respected common-born commander named Oswald, convenes the leaders of the competing parties. Prince Kassius, a duke's son and the king's nephew, arrives claiming he wants to help; generous and charismatic, he funds a bounty from his own purse and offers the unranked Hump a place as his personal wizard, and he proves to already know Bud from a visit to Bud's family estate. Vamir's plan, a diversion at the front paired with rescue parties slipping through the rear tunnels, is adopted. Before the assault, Vamir and Celaine privately admit they are Chosen of a hunt goddess worshipped outside the official Pantheon, a secret that could see them tried for heresy. As the attack begins, Hump notes the silent, death-marked black paladin among Kassius's retinue, and his own party heads alone down the deepest tunnel, more than an hour from any help.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Pushing deeper, the party crosses a rare underground grove of poisonous, essence-fed plant life and fights a pair of powerful scaled brutes. In the aftermath, the Goddess of Winter manifests directly to Bud, raising him to a higher circle of her Chosen and granting him a stronger frostfire blessing. Tracking the kobolds to their den, the group frees another chamber of captives, though Hump comes frighteningly close to losing control of his magic to rage, and coldly kills a kobold that had surrendered. He reflects grimly on warlocks: practitioners whose lost self-control corrupts and damages their very souls. Vamir, meanwhile, keeps displaying knowledge and skill far beyond an ordinary traveler's while deflecting every question about their source. With around forty-eight villagers now rescued, Bud confides that he truly left home not just to escape an arranged marriage but out of grief at his mother's death, the source of the bent silver medallion he wears. When Prince Kassius's own party fails to return from the dungeon and the Overseer calls a general retreat, Hump, Bud, Celaine, and Vamir choose to go back down, against the mercenaries' caution, to search for the missing prince.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
The four track the prince to an underground kobold settlement, where Kassius and his people are pinned inside a barred shrine. With a daring bluff, the tiny rescue party stages a diversion loud and bright enough to convince the kobolds they face a much larger force, breaking the siege and freeing Kassius. The grateful prince praises them lavishly and renews his interest in Hump. Searching the shrine, Hump and Bud find a blood-stained sacrificial altar and, in a pit behind it, the dungeon's own core, a prize many guilds would kill to control. Kassius reveals that he too can sense essence like a wizard, and admits he had deliberately withheld the core's existence to test them. Tempted, the party quietly weighs keeping the core's location secret so they can claim it themselves later. Then the day turns dark: across the settlement, Hump sees Kassius's own retinue cutting down fleeing villagers rather than protecting them, and moments later the four kobold sentries the party had killed earlier rise again, glowing with dark light, reanimated as undead.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
A far larger horror follows: a mass raise-undead spell reanimates every kobold and villager killed anywhere in the settlement, and the survivors are nearly overwhelmed. Hump downs a full vial of a dangerous, essence-flooding potion and channels an enormous blast that clears much of the horde, while Bud's holy frostfire and Vamir's blades cut down the rest. As kobold reinforcements rain arrows from above, Kassius orders Hump's group to escort the freed villagers to safety while he, his black paladin, and his rogue hold the rear, and the party still reads the prince as a selfless hero. The retreat becomes a running fight against pursuing salamanders and a fresh, better-led kobold wave. In a blood-stained chamber, Hump and Celaine are cut off from Bud and Vamir and, with no other escape, throw themselves down a deep disposal pit. Landing in total darkness, Hump looks up to find the only light is Celaine's eyes, now glowing green with vertical, inhuman pupils.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Sheltering in the dark, Celaine finally tells Hump part of her secret: as a child, everyone in her village underwent a costly and normally lethal course of dragon's-blood treatments, the source of her dark-adapted, glowing eyes, though she is not fey. Hump's spellbook yields powerful new workings as he recovers. Following distant sounds of battle, the pair stumble into the dungeon's true core chamber and find a massive undead dragon bound there, fiercely defending its nest, with Prince Kassius and his black paladin subduing it. When the dragon breaks loose, Hump and Celaine watch Kassius shrug off a dagger driven into his own skull, and realize the awful truth: he is the necromancer behind the mass reanimation and the murders they witnessed. The freed dragon rampages but never strays from guarding its nest and a single large egg, until the core itself seals the dragon and egg away inside a crystal shell to keep them from Kassius. Now exposed as witnesses to his true nature, Hump and Celaine become his targets, and Kassius orders his black paladin to seize Celaine.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Cornered, Kassius drops his mask: he is a warlock who has absorbed a heartstone before, and he preaches a creed that the gods are only ascended mortals hiding the path to power, a path his secret order means to seize. He reveals that his black paladin was once a true paladin of the light, broken and enslaved by Kassius's own death magic. Ordered to prove his loyalty by killing Celaine, Hump instead blinds the paladin and frees her, and Vamir emerges to drive an exploding arrow into Kassius, only for the prince to rise again, healed by a heartstone fused to his heart. A relief party of thirteen arrives, led by an elder priestess of Lady Light and including Bud, Joslin, and Lantheer, and a desperate pitched battle follows. Celaine blinds Kassius's remaining eye and Bud wounds him, nearly dying to a thrust that his late mother's medallion turns aside. Cornered, Kassius shatters the crystal seal to unleash the dragon, whose fire kills the priestess and turns the battle. Reaching the dragon's nest, Hump takes her egg and uses a rune-binding to drain her failing power into himself, sharing a vision that reveals she was hunted and fatally wounded years earlier by a young Kassius, the true cause of the burned forest. Mastering the borrowed power, Hump channels the dragon's full essence into a blast of fire that burns Kassius down to a charred, barely-living husk, while Bud, Celaine, and Joslin finally destroy the black paladin. Then a masked, shadow-woven entity with white eyes tears open reality, silently drags Kassius's ruined body through the rift, and is gone.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
In the aftermath, the rescued dragon egg is found to have soul-bonded to Hump, a bond only his death could break. He recovers at the encampment's field hospital, where a priestess heals his burns but cannot mend or even name an injury done to his very soul; nearly half the relief party died in the core chamber. Hump's spellbook has produced three new workings, one of which formally raises him to second-rank wizard, and his essence and fire affinity have grown dramatically, lingering imprints of the dragon's absorbed power that leave him privately afraid he has become something like a warlock himself. The Overseer sets an official story that Prince Kassius died a hero fighting the dragon, burying his crimes; but no remains of Kassius are ever found, his heart was still beating when the shadow figure took him, and no one else even saw that figure, so his fate stays an open mystery, along with the warlock order Oswald quietly promises to report up the chain. Because his bond to the egg would force him into likely-fatal trials among Vamir's people, Celaine and Bud both choose to stay at Hump's side, while Vamir departs alone, agreeing to delay reporting home and buy them roughly a year. At the Bledsbury guild hall, Hump is finally registered under his master's name, and Bud registers too, revealing himself to be a nobleman, Lord Robert Blackthorne. The three set out together toward Fishers Lake, hoping to find a wizard named Vivienne, an old friend of Hump's master, to continue his training.
How does it end? (ending)
The dungeon battle ends with Prince Kassius, exposed as a warlock and necromancer, burned to a charred, barely-living husk by Hump wielding the absorbed power of the dungeon's dragon. Before he can be finished, a masked, shadow-woven entity tears open reality, carries his body away, and vanishes; because no remains are found and no one else saw the figure, Kassius's survival, the entity's identity, and the secret order he served all remain unresolved. Officially, the prince is remembered as a hero who died fighting the dragon, a cover story the Overseer enforces before quietly escalating a warning up the chain of command. Hump emerges a second-rank wizard permanently changed: he carries a large, only partly controlled reserve of the dragon's power and a dramatically stronger fire affinity, an unhealed injury to his soul that no priestess can mend, and the dragon's egg, soul-bonded to him until his death. Because that bond would force him into likely-fatal trials among Vamir's people, Celaine and Bud both choose to stay with him rather than part ways, and Vamir departs alone, buying them time by delaying his report home. Bud is revealed to be a nobleman, Lord Robert Blackthorne, and Celaine registers with an adventurers' guild for the first time, stepping out on her own. Newly independent and guild-registered, the three set out from Bledsbury for Fishers Lake to seek a wizard named Vivienne to train Hump, while Kassius's fate, the shadow entity, and Hump's own uncertain nature hang over the road ahead.
