Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Arthur Dent (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A surviving Earthman marooned with Ford Prefect in Earth's remote past. After two years without rescue, he joins Ford in examining a ship whose appearance seems linked to whether they seriously confront their predicament.
Ford Prefect (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A Guide researcher stranded beside Arthur Dent on prehistoric Earth. Ford recognizes that the intermittently visible ship presents a causal paradox, giving the two companions their first plausible route away from the planet's distant past.
Zaphod Beeblebrox (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A fugitive former Galactic President and patient of Gag Halfrunt. He escapes a reported death when the creature that swallowed him becomes a capsule, then follows a message planted in his own mind directing him to find Zarniwoop.
Marvin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A robot travelling with Zaphod and the Heart of Gold party. He is beside Zaphod at the Guide offices when Frogstar forces seize the building.
Zarniwoop (Supporting)
Appears from the start
An unseen Guide figure whom a message inside Zaphod's mind compels him to seek. Staff at the Guide offices say Zarniwoop is away on an intergalactic cruise.
Gag Halfrunt (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Zaphod's brain-care specialist. When reports announce that his patient has died after being swallowed by a rapidly evolving creature, he treats the conclusion as premature and continues to regard Zaphod's condition as uncertain.
Guide researcher (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A fellow Guide researcher travelling with Zaphod during the assault on the Guide offices.
Eddie (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The upbeat computer aboard the Heart of Gold. Eddie operates the ship when it reaches prehistoric Earth and retrieves Arthur and Ford, following the Improbability Drive's discovery of Ford's fossilized towel.
Frogstar Vortex custodian (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
The official responsible for administering the Total Perspective Vortex on the Frogstar. The custodian places Zaphod into the one-second psychic ordeal, which is intended to expose its subject to the scale of the universe and their place within it.
Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 3
Commander of the Vogon fleet pursuing the Heart of Gold. He orders his forces to destroy the ship and eliminate Arthur, Ford and Zaphod, acting to ensure that no surviving Earthman escapes the Vogons' earlier work.
Zaphod's great-grandfather (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
Zaphod's deceased ancestor, contacted during a séance as the Vogon fleet prepares to attack. He tells Zaphod that the Galactic Presidency distracts attention from real authority and charges him with finding who actually exercises power.
Lintilla (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
An archaeologist investigating the history of the planet beneath the airborne cave. She shelters Arthur from armed corporate soldiers and studies the unexplained injuries that cause those soldiers to limp.
Bird people (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
Winged inhabitants of the planet who catch Arthur after his fall. They explain why their ancestors commissioned a vast statue of him, avoid setting foot on the surface because of an unexplained earlier disaster, and direct him through the statue.
Shoe-corporation executive (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
A corporate official who captures Arthur and Lintilla after their excavation reaches a layer of compressed footwear. He defends the company's development programme and presents the history of a shoe-driven economy that ended in famine and social collapse.
Cloning-company representatives (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 6
Legal representatives of the company responsible for the cloning machine. They pursue Arthur, Marvin and three Lintillas, then attempt to bind the clones through arranged marriages.
Occupant of the remote shack (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The isolated resident of a remote shack, apparently consulted by visitors about choices with consequences far beyond his home. When Ford and Zaphod question him, he rejects the idea that he rules others and accepts only what he can perceive directly.
