The Hound of the Baskervilles

By Arthur Conan Doyle

Dr James Mortimer, a country doctor from Dartmoor, brings Sherlock Holmes an old family document: a 1742 account of how a wicked Baskerville ancestor met his end on the moor at the jaws of a monstrous hound, and of the curse said to have followed his line ever since. Mortimer's friend Sir Charles Baskerville has just been found dead in the grounds of Baskerville Hall, his weak heart blamed, and Mortimer has told no one until now what he saw a little way from the body: the footprints of an enormous dog. The heir, Sir Henry, is arriving from Canada to take up the estate, and within a day of reaching London he has received an anonymous warning to keep away from the moor and had one of his new boots stolen from his hotel. Holmes, kept in London by other business, sends Watson down to Devon with him.
