The leader of Never Again continues the chase after losing both money and subordinates. In the historical narrative, Allan's travels lead to imprisonment in the Soviet Union. He encounters Stalin, whose suspicion turns a meeting into disaster, and is sent into the prison system. There he befriends Herbert Einstein, a kindly man burdened by comparison with his brilliant half brother. Allan's knowledge of explosives again creates an escape route, and the companions pass through North Korea and revolutionary China, where Allan's earlier assistance earns protection. Global leaders repeatedly assume he represents a political interest, although he remains chiefly concerned with survival, food, drink, and friendship.

The remaining gang pursuit finally collapses, and even the surviving leader loses control of the situation and is drawn into Allan's company. Aronsson catches up and listens as the travelers describe a chain of unintended deaths that is improbable but internally consistent. Allan's memories explain how Herbert found a new life with Amanda in Indonesia and how Allan later became useful to both sides of the Cold War. By passing information between American and Soviet contacts, he helped preserve a balance neither side fully understood. The supposedly helpless missing pensioner is revealed as someone who has spent a century surviving upheavals through technical skill and emotional composure.

Rather than return Allan to the care home or resume their former lives, Allan, Julius, Benny, Gunilla, Sonya, and the gang's surviving leader arrange to leave the country. They travel to Bali, where Allan's distant connection to Amanda and Herbert's past provides a welcome. Benny and Gunilla have chosen each other, and the whole party can live comfortably on the money that began the pursuit.
