The Alchemist running the Palm Springs assignment, and by now a working witch in everything but self-description. She has stopped being able to pretend that her magic is a favour to her teacher, and she has stopped being able to pretend that her order tells her the truth. She is still rigidly disciplined, still frightened of what she is becoming, and still living with the memory of turning Adrian down in the cruellest terms available to her.

A royal Moroi spirit user who was told, in the plainest possible language, that a relationship with him is unthinkable. He has not stopped feeling what he feels and has stopped bothering to hide it, which makes every conversation with Sydney an exercise in things neither of them will say. He can walk into other people's dreams, which is both useful and impossible to avoid.

Sydney's history teacher and the witch training her, increasingly urgent about it. She has a sister she does not talk about and a reason for wanting Sydney strong enough to defend herself. Blunt, tired and fond of Sydney in a way she expresses mostly as homework.

The Moroi queen's half-sister, still hidden at Amberwood and still the only thing keeping her sister on the throne. The bond with Adrian means she has lived through his heartbreak from the inside, and she knows exactly what Sydney did and why, which she cannot discuss with either of them.

Jill's dhampir guardian, posing as her brother. Disciplined to a fault and now attached to Angeline, he continues to treat his own feelings as a professional failing.

The dhampir raised among the Keepers, still adjusting badly to human school and still solving problems with her fists. She is with Eddie now, and neither of them is entirely sure it is what they wanted.

Sydney's lab partner, disowned by the Warriors of Light for helping her. He has lost the future his family planned for him and is working out what is left, while keeping the group's secrets.

Jaclyn Terwilliger's older sister and the reason for her urgency: a witch who takes the magic and the youth of younger witches, leaving them drained and comatose, and who grows stronger with every one she takes. An untrained witch of real power is precisely what she looks for.

A Moroi spirit user and former Strigoi restored by spirit magic, now marrying after years apart from the man she loves. She is one of the few people who can see what Sydney's aura says about her, and she says it kindly.

A dhampir guardian to the Moroi queen, blunt and famously reckless, and one of the very few people who has ever seen Sydney break the Alchemists' rules. Their history is the reason Sydney's order has never entirely trusted her.

The one-eyed self-defence instructor whose lessons Sydney and Adrian keep returning to. His grasp of the world's stranger corners turns out to be better sourced than his manner suggests.

An Alchemist who left the order and survived it, now living off the books with a small group of former Alchemists who call themselves the Merry Men. He wears an indigo tattoo over his golden lily and claims to know what the order's tattoos really do to the people who wear them. Charismatic, evasive about his own plans, and very interested in recruiting Sydney.

Sydney's father, a career Alchemist whose marriage is collapsing and who intends to keep his youngest daughter and her career for himself. He regards Sydney's judgement as a liability and does not conceal it.

A young witch on the edge of the local coven, apparently weak, apparently harmless and apparently very glad of the help offered to her.

Sydney's younger sister, now committed to the Alchemists and hardened by the choice. She arrives in Palm Springs assigned to the same posting as Sydney, which makes her both family and a witness.
