After losing a comfortable startup job at the start of the pandemic, Jamie Gray accepts a mysterious position with the Kaiju Preservation Society. KPS operates through a gateway in Greenland to a parallel Earth where gigantic creatures powered by biological nuclear reactors support entire ecosystems. At Tanaka Base, Jamie joins scientists Aparna, Niamh, and Kahurangi, learns the hazards of fieldwork, and helps monitor a female kaiju called Bella. The mission becomes dangerous in a new way when Jamie's former employer, billionaire Rob Sanders, arrives among influential visitors. Sanders sees the kaiju as exploitable assets and uses his access to undermine the preserve's safeguards. Jamie and the KPS team resist his attempt to seize control of kaiju biology and avert a disaster spanning both worlds. Sanders dies during the confrontation, Bella is protected, and the preserve's secrecy holds. Having found friends and useful work, Jamie chooses to remain with KPS.

As the COVID-19 pandemic reaches New York, Jamie Gray is pushed out of a strategy job at the food-delivery startup füdmüd by its founder, Rob Sanders. With rent due and few alternatives, Jamie becomes one of the company's delivery workers. A delivery to Tom Stevens, an old acquaintance, unexpectedly produces an offer: Tom's wildlife organization needs someone for a long overseas assignment, and the work is described mainly as lifting things for scientists. Jamie accepts despite the secrecy surrounding the post. Contracts, vaccinations, and a rapid departure follow, giving Jamie little time to understand what kind of animals could require such elaborate precautions.

Jamie travels with three new colleagues: astrobiologist Aparna Chandra, chemist Niamh Healy, and physicist Kahurangi. In Greenland, Tom finally explains the Kaiju Preservation Society. Nuclear events can open passages to a parallel Earth dominated by immense animals whose bodies function like biological reactors. KPS secretly studies and protects that world while preventing crossings that might endanger either ecosystem. The recruits pass through a controlled gateway and arrive at Tanaka Base. Jamie is the group's nonspecialist, but the preserve depends as much on safe logistics and teamwork as on research. The first encounters with the surrounding wildlife make clear that even creatures dwarfed by kaiju can be lethal and that every trip beyond the base requires discipline.

The new team settles into Tanaka Base and begins field assignments. Jamie learns that kaiju are not solitary monsters but moving habitats: their heat and radiation support parasites, scavengers, and symbiotic species, all woven into the larger ecology. The station is monitoring a huge female nicknamed Bella, and routine work near her is dangerous even when she is not aggressive. Jamie's ability to stay calm, carry equipment, and act quickly proves valuable alongside the others' scientific expertise. The group also learns how vulnerable KPS is. It relies on wealthy donors and secrecy, and its staff must protect a world with extraordinary scientific and commercial value while operating far from ordinary oversight.

A party of donors and influential visitors arrives at the preserve, among them Rob Sanders. Jamie recognizes the man who wrecked their career, while Sanders recognizes an opportunity much larger than his existing businesses. KPS personnel try to keep the visit controlled, but the outsiders are less interested in preservation than in the kaijus' biological nuclear processes. Bella's reproductive condition makes the situation especially sensitive. Jamie, Aparna, Niamh, and Kahurangi increasingly distrust the visitors' intentions, yet the station's dependence on outside funding gives the group access that ordinary tourists would never receive. What had seemed primarily a problem of surviving alien wildlife becomes a problem of containing human ambition.

Sanders uses the visit and his resources to push beyond the limits imposed by KPS. His group interferes with station safeguards and attempts to gain control of kaiju material, treating Bella and the parallel world as property waiting to be claimed. Jamie's cohort and the experienced base staff are constrained and separated while the intruders put a plan into motion that could provoke a kaiju-scale nuclear event and compromise the barrier between worlds. The KPS team regroups, combines its scientific knowledge with Jamie's practical improvisation, and sets out to stop them. Protecting Bella is now inseparable from protecting Earth, because a panicked or displaced kaiju would be catastrophic wherever it emerged.

Jamie and the Tanaka Base team pursue Sanders as his effort to exploit Bella reaches its crisis. They free themselves from his control, work across specialties, and intervene directly around the enormous animal despite the risk. Sanders will not surrender the prize he imagines and dies on the kaiju world during the confrontation. His scheme collapses before it can create a lasting breach or expose the preserve to ordinary Earth. Bella survives, the immediate ecological danger is contained, and KPS retains custody of its research and gateway. In the aftermath, Jamie is no longer merely the person hired to lift things. The friendships with Aparna, Niamh, and Kahurangi and the shared defense of the preserve have made KPS a community. Jamie accepts a permanent future with the organization, whose work remains necessary precisely because kaiju are both dangerous and vulnerable to human greed.

Sanders's attempt to turn a kaiju and its nuclear biology into a commercial prize puts both worlds at risk. Jamie and the Tanaka Base team escape the restrictions placed on them, pursue the intruders, and improvise a way to protect Bella during the resulting confrontation. Sanders refuses to abandon his scheme and dies on the kaiju world, while the surviving KPS personnel prevent the crisis from becoming a breach that would expose Earth. The visitors who enabled him are forced to face the consequences, and the preserve remains secret. Jamie's temporary escape from pandemic unemployment has become a chosen vocation: with close friends among the new scientific cohort and a community at Tanaka Base, Jamie accepts a continuing place in KPS. The organization survives damaged but intact, still tasked with protecting a dangerous ecosystem from both accidental crossings and human exploitation.
