As assassins close in, she is also drawn into two supernatural crises: the dying master vampire Sabin seeks help for his physical decay, and Richard must settle his challenge to Marcus for leadership of the St. Louis werewolves. Protecting vulnerable pack members brings Anita into direct conflict with Marcus, Raina, and Gabriel. The pressures on Anita, Richard, and Jean-Claude create a metaphysical triumvirate that shares their power. Previously: Anita Blake raises the dead professionally and executes vampires under court order. Jean-Claude became master vampire of St. Louis after Anita killed his predecessor and placed two mystical marks on Anita, though she refuses his claim that she is his human servant. Anita fell in love with Richard Zeeman, a werewolf science teacher, while Jean-Claude continued to pursue her. During an investigation into shapeshifter disappearances, Jean-Claude forced a compromise in which Anita agreed to date both men. Richard proposed and Anita accepted, but the agreement remained. On a later assignment near Branson, Anita and her trainee Larry confronted the master vampire Seraphina and a betrayal involving the ancient being Bloody Bones. Jean-Claude's intervention was essential to Anita's survival. Anita begins this book engaged to Richard but less able to dismiss her attraction and growing reliance on Jean-Claude; Richard's unresolved struggle with pack leader Marcus continues beside that romantic rivalry.

Edward warns Anita that someone has offered a substantial payment for her death and that experienced contract killers are likely to compete for it. Early attacks confirm that the threat is organized rather than a consequence of one of Anita's open police cases. Richard and Jean-Claude both want to protect her, but accepting either man's protection carries political and personal costs. Anita remains engaged to Richard while continuing the dates she promised Jean-Claude, and the attempt on her life makes it impossible to keep their rivalry separate from practical decisions about where she can safely stay and whom she can trust.

Cassandra, a capable werewolf, joins the group guarding Anita. A second problem arrives with Sabin, an ancient master vampire whose body is failing after he stopped taking human blood. His human servant, the necromancer Dominic Dumare, believes Anita's unusual affinity with the dead may offer a cure. Jean-Claude has reasons to help another master while also fearing what Sabin's condition might imply for vampires who deny their nature. Anita agrees to investigate without promising that her power can reverse the damage. The assassins remain active, forcing every meeting to take place under heightened security.

The conflict within Richard's pack becomes as urgent as the contract on Anita. Marcus and Raina maintain control through dominance and intimidation, supported by Gabriel's wereleopards. Stephen and other less powerful shapeshifters pay the price for that arrangement. Richard has the strength to challenge Marcus and wants to reform the pack, but he still resists the requirement that a leadership challenge end in death. Anita's interventions make her a participant in the dispute even though she is not a werewolf. Cassandra appears to offer protection outside the most compromised local loyalties, while Dominic continues studying the power around Anita and Jean-Claude.

Professional killers continue testing Anita's defenses, and Edward helps turn their methods against them. Harley emerges as the most dangerous of the remaining assassins. At the same time, Anita's defense of Stephen and her refusal to tolerate Raina and Gabriel's coercion make a peaceful settlement with the shapeshifter leadership impossible. Richard must either accept Marcus's authority or issue the challenge he has delayed. Jean-Claude argues that Richard cannot claim leadership while rejecting every part of werewolf law, a judgment that also sharpens their contest over Anita. The supernatural connection among the three grows stronger under repeated danger.

The assassin threat, Sabin's request, and the pack struggle converge. Anita and Edward narrow the field of contract killers, but the source of the bounty and the supernatural interests surrounding it remain entangled. Richard accepts that Marcus will not yield and prepares for a formal challenge. Anita, Jean-Claude, and Richard discover that their existing ties can combine into a triumvirate, amplifying their abilities and making each vulnerable to the others. Raina and Gabriel respond to the loss of control over weaker shapeshifters with direct violence. Cassandra and Dominic remain close to the group as the final confrontations approach, apparently committed to protecting Anita and finding a way to stabilize Sabin.

Richard fights and kills Marcus, taking control of the St. Louis pack. Anita sees him fully accept the violent reality of the challenge, and the experience destroys her belief that she can marry him while keeping his werewolf nature at a distance. Raina and Gabriel are killed after their campaign of coercion becomes a direct attack. Cassandra and Dominic then reveal that their loyalty has been to a concealed plan involving Sabin and the power of the new triumvirate. They turn against Anita, Jean-Claude, and Richard but are defeated and killed. Edward helps dispose of the remaining professional killers, ending the immediate contract threat. Anita, Richard, and Jean-Claude survive with their metaphysical triumvirate intact. Anita goes to Jean-Claude, becomes his lover, and ends her engagement to Richard. Richard is now pack leader and remains supernaturally joined to both of them, leaving the former romantic contest transformed rather than fully resolved.

Richard finally challenges Marcus and kills him, becoming leader of the St. Louis werewolf pack. The victory also forces Anita to witness the part of Richard's nature that he has tried to keep separate from their relationship, and her reaction breaks the confidence on which their engagement depended. Raina and Gabriel are killed after their coercion of weaker shapeshifters turns into a direct attack, ending their control over the local wolves and leopards. Cassandra and Dominic are exposed as serving a hidden plan centered on Sabin and the power shared by Anita, Jean-Claude, and Richard; they turn on Anita and are killed when the plan fails. The professional killers pursuing Anita are also defeated, with Edward instrumental in ending the contract threat. During the converging conflicts, Anita, Jean-Claude, and Richard form a powerful metaphysical triumvirate. After recoiling from Richard's transformation and killing of Marcus, Anita goes to Jean-Claude and becomes his lover. She ends her engagement to Richard. Richard remains linked to both of them through the triumvirate and now leads the pack, so the emotional triangle survives even though Anita has chosen Jean-Claude as her partner at the book's close.
